CURRENT POSITION

August 2008 – present Research associate, Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences,

Indiana Univ., USA. With Prof. Cary Lai.

PREVIOUS POSITIONS HELD

2008- present post-doctoral fellow, Department of Psychology and Brain Sciences, Indiana Univ.,

USA.

I am collaborating on the study on the behavioral analyses of cowbirds. With Prof.

Meredith West and Dr. Andrew King

2005 – 2007 post-doctoral fellow, Indiana Univ., Dept. Chemistry, Bloomington IN USA.

I was collaborating on the development of microfluidic-based chemical delivery

systems to study the response of mice sperm cells and bacteria, Caulobacter

crescentus, to chemicals delivered with high spatial and temporal precision in

microfluidic devices. With Prof. Stephen C. Jacobson

2003 -2005 Senior Research Associate, Indiana Univ., Dept. Chemistry, Bloomington IN USA.

I was collaborating on a project identifying chemicals which are MHC gene related

in mice. With Prof. M. Novotny

1995 -2003 Post-doctoral Researcher, University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

I investigated the influence of male social status and female odors on sperm

activities and sperm density in mice. Odors of dominant males were found to

influence sperm activity of subordinate male mice and female odors were found to

influence sperm density of male mice. With Prof. Shinji Kamimura

1991-1995 Visiting Scientist, University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

I investigated the influence of social status and social isolation on the social

behavior of male mice. Male mice were found to change their behaviors according

to their social status and the social status of the mice they encountered. Socially

isolated mice were found to lack such differences of behavior depending on social

status of the mice they encountered and learning process was suggested to be

necessary. With Prof. Takeji Kimura

1985-1991 Senior Research Associate, Dept. of Psychology, Tokyo Woman’s Christian

University, Tokyo, Japan.

I conducted studies on the influences of social status and social isolation on the

behaviors of male laboratory mice. I also conducted studies on the reproductive

behavior of small Japanese field mice (Apodemus argenteus) and the physiological

and behavioral growth of small Japanese field mice by establishing a breeding

colony in laboratory animal facility. This was the first record in Japan of breeding

small Japanese field mice, which is known to be very difficult to breed in captivity.

Nobody else could establish a breeding colony after this either. I also conducted

studies on the food storing behavior of varied tits (Parus varius) and food

searching behavior of Japanese rat snakes (Elaphe climacophora). I also

conducted studies on the learning behavior of Japanese monkeys (Macaca

fuscata). With Prof. Noriyoshi Nitta.

SELECTED RESEARCHES OF MINE CONDUCTED UNTIL PRESENT

(1) I found that sperm activities of mice are different depending on the social status. Dominant male

mice showed higher sperm activity compared to subordinate male mice. The differences

diminished when the vomeronasal organ of the subordinates was destroyed, which suggested

that the differences were mediated by the pheromone from dominant male mice. The results also

suggested that males’ pheromones affected males’ sperm maturation, and not spermatogenesis.

(2) I found that sperm density of male mice is higher when males were exposed to soiled bedding of

female mice. Influences of females’ soiled bedding were also different depending on the housing

conditions of females, which suggested that some pheromones which changed their secretion

depending on females’ housing condition affected males’ sperm density. The results also

suggested that females’ pheromone affected males’ spermatogenesis.

(3) I developed microfluidic devices which are useful in the observation of sperm activities and

movement studies.

(4) I developed a portable microscope with built-in thermoplate in collaboration with P-Tech Co.

(Osaka, Japan), which is convenient to use in the observation of sperm activities in outdoor field

studies.

(5) Utilizing the methodology of animal learning on the investigation of preferences toward odors in

mice, I found that n-nonanal attracts male mice. N-nonanal was detected in the soiled bedding

from female mice by GC/MS analyses, in collaboration with Sumika Life-Tech Co. Ltd., Japan,

and I made a Y-maze with brief wind to bring the odor to the starting box where the mice was first

put. The concentration which attracted mice most was also determined. The results were

summarized and we applied for a patent from Sumika Life-Tech Co. Ltd. The names included in

the application of the patent are Prof. Shinji Kamimura, University of Tokyo, Shinobu Kawamoto,

Sumika Life-Tech Co. Ltd, other than my name. Patent application number: JA03046

(6) I have the record as the first person to successfully breed and keep colonies of long-tailed field

mice (Apodemus argenteus) under laboratory condition in Japan. Apodemus argenteus is a wild

mice species which has its habitat only in Japan.

(7) I studied the social play behavior of Japanese monkeys in field and clarified that social play is not

randomly taking place but there is a relationship between the play-mates and their social

statuses, genders, and the closeness of their family relationships. Social statuses of Japanese

monkeys were found to affect the top-bottom position in the rough-and-tumble play behaviors

(individuals of higher social status tended to be more on the top position) and there were also

differences depending on sex (males played more than females).

(8) I studied the influences of housing conditions and social statuses on the social behavior of male

mice. Mice reared in isolation showed abnormalities in their social behavior, which suggested

that mice need to learn the way to communicate through social experiences. The behaviors of

mice were also largely influenced by the social statuses. Complexity and space of the cages

also influenced aggressiveness of male mice. These results were also utilized in the

development of housing conditions in keeping wild mice in lab conditions and compared with the

success in breeding and longevity under laboratory conditions.

(9) I studied the history of keeping small birds as pet and also studied the history of training tricks to

small birds in Japan. The study was published as a book in 1999, which received more than 10

reviews in major newspapers and magazines and journals. The book was also used in entrance

examination by a university (Kaetsu University) in 2007. This book is one of the very rare books

on aviculture in the world.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am interested in:

(1) The influence of social relationships on behavior and reproductive activities in animals.

(2) The influence of pheromone on social behavior, hormone secretion, and reproductive activities of animals including human.

(3) The influences of the strength of sperm competition on sperm activity, % of abnormal sperm, and sperm density.

(4) The history of animals in human culture.

Other than these study projects above, I am always willing to expand my interest and start new

study projects with colleagues.

TEACHING EXPERIENCES AND INTERESTS

I have experiences of making lectures on the following topics: (1) Animal behavior, communication in animals: I made lectures about the morphological

characteristics of animals, their sensory organs, and their relation to the communication system, for

example, about chemical communication (olfactory sense and pheromone), communication using

visual sight (visual sense, signals used as visual sight), and acoustic communication (hearing and

voice producing).

(2) Animal learning, animal intelligence: I made lectures about the classification of the types of

learning (classical conditioning, operant conditioning, modeling, etc) and their characteristics, and

mechanisms. I also talked about the application of learning techniques in the studies on animal

physiology and behavioral ecology.

(3) Animal behavior and animal welfare: I taught the mechanisms of animal learning and its

application to the improvement of the zoo environment or pet-owner and pet relationships. I also

taught about the influences of housing conditions on animal behavior and stress.

(4) History of human-animal relations: I made lectures about the history of animals in human

culture, the images of animals and its relation with religion and economical background of the culture

(agricultural or hunting-gathering) in ancient days.

Teaching interests other than those listed above:(1) I have been using domesticated animals (lab mice and rats and poultry) and wild animals (wild

mice and wild birds in main) in lab conditions in main (except in the study on Japanese

monkeys). My main study subjects have been the social behavior in mammals, especially the

chemical communication, social relationships, and reproductive activities. I am enthusiastic in

teaching the general frameworks of the studies on these subjects and also in teaching how to

conduct researches on these subjects.

(2) From the experience of breeding and keeping small wild mice in captivity, I am enthusiastic in

teaching the development and improvement of housing conditions of small mammals in captivity,

not only from the view point of animal welfare but also from the view point of efficiency in

breeding or in keeping animals in good condition, which is related to animal welfare in long term.

(3) From both of the experience of field work on the social behaviors of Japanese monkeys and

observations of social behaviors of mice in lab, I am interested in teaching how to conduct

behavioral observations in laboratory, in zoo, and in the field.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

2007 Guest lecturer, Indiana University, Department of Biology, IN, USA

I made a lecture on olfactory communication in animals in animal behavior course (Z460:

Instructor Prof. Laura Hurley). It was an introductory course in animal behavior for undergraduate

students studying biology. The number of students was ca 30. The class was one day, 74 min.

Students were assigned to write comments and questions and were graded by them.

2006 Lecturer, Gifu University, Gifu, Japan

Lectures on olfactory communication in animals. I made lectures to graduate students studying

animal sciences. The number of graduate students was ca 15. The class was one semester

class concentrated into 2 days (15 lectures). Students were assigned to write comments and

questions and were graded by them.

1997 -2003 Lecturer, St. Paul University, Tokyo, Japan.

Lectures on animal behavior and behavioral physiology. I had one class/week each semester

(in Japan there are 2 semesters/year and one class is 90 minutes). The class was for

undergraduate students from freshmen ~ senior. The number of students of each class

varied but usually it was around 100 ~ 150 students. Students were assigned to write

comments and questions each time and I listed up all the questions and comments in a

paper, handed out the printed paper to the students at the next week’s class, and added

comments in detail to the interesting comments and questions at the beginning of the class.

This “comments and question and answers” time worked well to motivate students to think

about the theme I talked in the class. Grading was based on the results of exam at the end of

semesters.

1996 -2003 Lecturer, Saitama University, Saitama, Japan.

Lectures on animal behavior and behavioral physiology. I had one class/week each semester

and the number of students for each class was from 150 ~ 200. Grading was based on the

results of exam at the end of semesters.

1992-2003 Lecturer, Yamazaki College of Animal Health Technician.

I had classes for the freshmen and junior and I mentored seniors class of writing thesis.

Lectures for the freshmen were introductory course on animal behavior and the lectures for

the junior were about human-and-animal relationship, animals in human culture, learning in

animals (its basic mechanism and application to domestic animals, e.g. dogs). Number of

students varied by year, but usually 7~8 classes of 50 students/class per semester. Number

of students I mentored to write up theses was totally 15 during 1992-2003. The grading was

based on the results of the exams conducted at the end of the semester for the freshmen and

juniors, and by the thesis for the seniors.

2002 Lecturer, Tokyo Gakugei University, Tokyo, Japan.

I made lectures on animal behavior and behavioral physiology. The topics on animal

behavior were, for example, communication (visual, chemical, acoustic), learning in animals,

mechanisms of learning. I had a class during one semester and the number of students was

ca 20. The grading was based on the results of the exam at the end of the semester.

1987 -1992 Lecturer, Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, Japan.

I had one class each semester and I made lectures on animal behavior and behavioral

physiology, and animal learning. I also taught training course of experiments using animals

(Japanese monkeys, rats, and mice). The numbers of students were from 15~20 per

semester (per class). The grading was based on the report about the experiments at the

training course and on the report of the theme I provided around the end of the semester.

1990 Lecturer, Azabu Veterinary University, Japan.

I made lectures on the general topics in psychology. The number of students was around 200

and the lectures were 1 class/week for one semester. The grading was made based on the

results of exam at the end of the semester.

1987 -1988, 1992 -1997 Lecturer, Seitoku University, Chiba, Japan.

I made lectures on the general topics in social psychology. The number of students was

different depending on the year, but ca 400 on average, i.e., ca 4 classes (100

students/class), per semester. The grading was based on the results of exam at the end of

semester.

1985 –1991 Instructor, Department of Psychology, Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, Tokyo,

Japan.

I mentored 30 students to accomplish their studies to submit bachelor degree theses,

teaching from establishing experimental design, ethical use of animals, collecting data, data

analyses, and writing up theses. I also worked on the animal facility management.
