Dear Parents and Caregivers, Reconciliation Faith NightOur prayers are with the Year Three students and their families as they celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation tonight and last Tuesday evening. Congratulations to Erin Nagel and Gail Ryan who organised the celebration of the Sacrament. I would also like to congratulate the Year 3/4 teachers for their dedication and preparation of the Year 3 students. Thank you to the parents of the Year 3 students as you are the first faith givers to your children and we can only support all of your efforts. St Michael’s Open DaysCongratulations to our school leaders who conducted the tours for Open Day on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday. The feedback from the families was extremely positive. If you know of anyone who missed our Open Days please tell your friends and family to come along, make an appointment and meet our wonderful student leaders and to hear about our exciting plans for the future and the excellent learning opportunities our school provides. Learning FairJust a reminder this year our students and teachers will share the amazing learning that occurs at St Michael’s with you, our parents, through a Learning Fair on 4th April between 3pm and 5pm. The Learning Fair celebrates the learning that occurs on a daily basis and the improved outcomes. It is also a great opportunity to share the strategies and ask questions. Please enrol online www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the code scyzj Greater Saskatoon Delegates VisitLast Thursday 21st March Greg Chatlain, Director of Education/Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, Terri Fradette, Superintendent of Education, Leanne McGeltigan, Principal of Pope John Paul II School and John McGeltigan President of the Saskatoon Teachers Association in Canada visited St Michael’s to discuss our innovative approaches to school improvement. The delegates were extremely impressed with the collaboration and engagement of the children as we toured the school. Throughout the last year Laurina van der-EL, our Performance and Development leader, has lead a Learning Sprints Team comprising of Annie Rose M, Charlotte A, Elle S and Josie W which utilises Dr Simon Breakspear’s Agile School tools and resources for enhanced school improvement. Our school is part of a case study demonstrating how immersive team development sessions and practical tools have helped our leaders have a better 'how' for leading educational change. Annie Rose, Charlotte and Laurina presented St Michael’s case study in Sydney last weekend. We congratulate them and feel extremely proud of their hard work and the research and work of the Year 1/2 team. Your children continue to benefit directly from the Sprint’s methodology. I wish all families a peaceful and happy Easter and a safe holiday break. I look forward to the learning we will share in Term 2.

Well done to the entire St Michael's community on decreasing the amount of wrappers brought to school! Well done to 3/4AL on winning the nude food trophy this week, 3/4AL students came to school with nude food 116 times. A special mention to Prep E who came in a close second with a count of 111. Remember, it's not about unwrapping the food at home but making the conscious choice of choosing food with less or no packaging. DID YOU KNOW! Glass can be recycled over and over again. Today approximately 25% of your new glass jars and bottles are made from recycled materials. If you put your glass in landfill, it can take 1 million years to break down. Veggies love a DipDo lonely veggies come home like a boomerang in your child’s lunch box? Sometimes veggies need a helping hand from a tasty dip. There are so many healthy and varied dips you can pack along with veggies to make the Nude Food lunch box a little bit more exciting. Think hummus, beetroot dip, plain greek yogurt…and the list goes on. Many of these can be whipped up in minutes! Why not try this simple 2 minute avocado dip and see if the veggies disappear?https://pinchofyum.com/avocado-dip

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC)

The work of the SAC continues in 2019, with new members Belinda O’Callaghan and Brendan Groves joining us this year. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Jason Hay for his service on the SAC over the last few years, and also Chris Place for agreeing to fill the vacancy following Jason's recent resignation. I would also like to thank Tim Wrathall for taking over as Deputy-Chairman.Back in October last year, I requested feedback from the School community concerning proposals for street parking changes during peak times for pickups and dropoffs. I can now report that Boroondara Council will shortly make changes to signage on Morotai Avenue, such that there will be three spaces marked out across a span of approximately 18 metres on the school side of Morotai Avenue, immediately adjacent to the corner of High Street. These spaces will be restricted to 5 minute parking between 8am and 9:30am, and between 3pm and 4:30pm. In addition, markings will indicate the distance from the corner of High Street in which vehicles may not stop. Council has also indicated that they are prepared to create a similar set of spaces on the opposite side (the church side) of Victory Blvd, however the SAC has decided at this time to assess the utility of the Morotai Ave spaces before deciding as to whether further spaces are required. I would like to thank Augarette Malki on behalf of the SAC for continuing to assist in corresponding with Council on this issue. The SAC is also busy reviewing important school policies, including the new Parental Code of Conduct. As these documents are finalised, details of the amended policies will be provided in the newsletter, and I encourage parents to review them on the school website. In our most recent meeting, the SAC received a presentation on the Leadership and Management sphere of the School Improvement Program. I highly recommend attending the Learning Fair to learn more about the incredible effort being put into identifying and applying the best research-led teaching and learning methods, and the incredible results being driven by the whole leadership team and embraced by the staff at St Michaels. As always, feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or wish to discuss the work of the SAC. Michael Fletcher (Chairman) .

ST MICHAEL'S PAST STUDENTS

My name is Jono Avgeridis. I joined De La Salle College in Year 7. In 2019 I am serving as St Austin’s House Captain.Being chosen as a Student Leader is an honour, to be given the opportunity to represent the College as a House Captain.I have been fortunate enough to grow very close to the leaders who have come before me. The previous College Student Leaders have impressed me by building quality relationships and learning many vital skills that leaders must possess. Most notibly, the example set for me by fellow St Michael’s Primary School graduate, Peter Nikitas, has provided a great role model in my life. His respect, motivation and strength to keep pushing through even in the face of a challenge, are three key qualities I admire.I came to De La Salle from St Michael’s Primary School, Ashburton. St Michael’s gifted me many memories that will stay with me for life. There are so many wonderful moments that pop into my head when I think of primary school, including the teachers, the awesome students, in which I was lucky enough to become close friends with and also the day in day out little things that will stay in my mind forever. My primary school definitely helped me develop my leadership skills and prepared me for high school in many ways. St Michael’s taught me to be caring, hard working and of course to have respect for everyone, a key skill upon which I base my leadership. These have helped me through high school and also life in general.I particularly remember I would like to say a special thank you to all the teachers who helped me through my primary years, in particular Mr Rudolf Lameijn, to put it simply... he’s a legend! Also to Ms Marisa Matthys, who was a fantastic leader, who I admire greatly.

My name is Oliver Barr. I joined De La Salle College in Year 7. In 2019 I am serving as St Austin’s House Lasallian Co-Captain. I was absolutely honoured to be chosen as a Student Leader. I came to De La Salle from St Michael’s Primary School, Ashburton. My fondest memories from St Michael’s would be of the art shows and performances we did. It was always so much fun to express myself and develop my abilities and share it with my friends and family. St Michael’s Primary School definitely helped me develop my leadership skills by giving me opportunities as the student class representative. I was able to begin developing my skills as a leader and further engage my communication skills in meetings

In 2019 I am serving as St Mark’s House Lasallian Captain.Being chosen as a Student Leader makes me feel pretty privileged, and respected by my peers. The previous College Student Leaders have impressed me by not backing down from challenges.I came to De La Salle from St Michael's Ashburton. I remember the time spent with my friends and just enjoying my time there. My primary school definitely helped me develop my leadership skills. I was school captain there, so having a captaincy role at all has helped build up my leadership.I'd like to thank everyone at St Michael's, all the teachers that taught me, I really appreciated every second.
