“Why can’t you just be more like all the other kids?” Ok, so chances are you’d never actually say this to your child, but if you’re a mom whose child doesn’t quite fit in, there are timesyou probably think it. And then feel guilty.

We don’t like to talk about these feelings, because we’re not supposed to have them.Society tells us that a good mother is happy with her children exactly the way they are, and shouldnever wish them to be different; this is an easy opinion to hold if all your kids fit the “regularchild” mold. But what if your child is more of a square peg?

Children can be different from their peers physically, emotionally and/or socially, and to varyingdegrees. As a parent, you have to look at which aspects of your child are within yourcontrol, and which aren’t. For example, you can teach your child about good nutrition, andcook healthy meals, but he may or may not be the same size as most of his peers. You can roleplay to help your child understand social cues, but you can’t make the other kids at the park wantto play with her. We tend to see our children as reflections of ourselves, which makes itall the more difficult when this reflection differs from our ideal in some way.

What’s a parent of a square peg to do? Here are some ideas and perspectives to consider:• Keep negativity at bay. Try not to blame either yourself or your child for his differences. Find

ways to come to terms with characteristics that you can’t change, rather than judging them. If you’re harboring negative opinions about your child, he’ll pick up on these.

• Make absolutely sure your child knows that you love her unconditionally. As much as possible, don’t make her difference a focal point; instead, direct your attention toward what you love about her, and recognize her positive traits, to help her see these attributes in herself.

• Find what your child is good at, and give him as many opportunities as possible to succeed in this area, whatever it is. This will help empower him, build confidence, and help him to focus on his strengths.

• Understand that your child may have to be selective with friends, to find those who will like her just as she is. Support her choices, and help her to nurture relationships that will build her up.

• Consider the gifts in your child’s difference. You might not have wished for the path you’re on, but it may give both you and your child the opportunity to grow in ways you wouldn’t have had otherwise.

• Look down the road, and know that overcoming adversity often leads a child to become a particularly caring, compassionate and resilient adult.

• Finally, recognize that there are no “perfect” kids. All children have their issues and differences; some problematic characteristics are just more visible to the outside world.

It’s difficult to have a child who doesn’t fit in, but with love, patience and confidence in your childand yourself, you can find acceptance in what is, rather than spending precious time and energywishing things were different.
