Cemetery Respect & Honor

A group of Sacred Heart parish mem-bers spruced up the older section of the Sacred Heart Cemetery on May 24 in advance of the Memorial Day weekend. Doug & Jo Anne Price provided flower ar-rangements and the Knights of Columbus added to the supply with a donation for the cost of additional flowers. The flowers were placed on the graves in the older section as a memorial to those who may not have family members living or they have moved away. Thank you to Doug & Jo Anne Price, Ken Un-trauer, Bruce & Karen Hoffmeier and Marty & Debbie Stratton, along with the Knights of Columbus, for this effort.

Prayer for Vocations In an effort to foster a culture of voca-tions in our parish, we will have a time of prayer for vocations after the Masses this weekend. Members of the parish are always invited to remain in the church following Mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be made to use time after

Mass for parishioners to focus their prayer on vocations. Following the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for per-sonal reflection. We ask all to observe silence while exiting church.

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, our needs are great and our people hunger to hear the Gospel proclaimed in word, deed and sacrament.

Send the power of your Holy Spirit to encourage men and women to open their

hearts to hear Your call and to joyfully serve in the Diocese of Davenport as priests,

deacons, religious and lay ministers.

May those who minister now be filled with Your Spirit of courage and love. May they persevere in their call to serve Your people.

Grant that many will be inspired by their witness and love to answer Your call.

Thank You . . Prayer Shawl Committee, Thank you so much for the prayer shawl. Knowing your prayers are with me during this time. I am so grateful for the time you have gone into making this won-derful shawl. Thank you again for it. I will cherish it.

Election for at-large Pastoral Council Members The Sacred Heart Pastoral Council is a vital part to fostering the pastoral work here at Sacred Heart. The people who serve on the council collaborate with Father Reynolds to provide leadership, direction, resources and encouragement to the apostolic and spiritual development of all parishioners. The Constitution of Sacred Heart Catholic Church outlines the duties, responsibilities and structure for the Pastoral Council. This includes 2 “Elected Members” at-large from the parish. The following parishioners are nominees for these two positions. You will be voting for two people to join the Pastoral Council this weekend, June 2nd & 3rd. Here are the nominees:

Page 6 The Most Holy Tr in i ty Sunday June 3, 2012

Jim Nilles I became a member of Sacred Heart in November of 1984 when Deb and I moved to Newton. I have been active in parish activites such as Faith Festivals, adult study groups, a member

of the Knights of Columbus. I was a Faith Formation teacher for two years at the middle school level, and I have been a volunteer taking care of 2 of the flower gardens on church grounds for two years. I have been a long time Extraordinary Minister for Sacred Heart. I was born and raised a Catholic and went to a Catholic grade school in my hometown, Webster City, Iowa. Deb and I have 4 kids, and all have been active in serving the church in a variety of ways. I have been teaching high school social studies at Knoxville for the past 20 years.

Jean Ferguson My name is Jean Ferguson and my husband, Jack, and I have been mem-bers of Sacred Heart for 35 years. During this time, I have participated in several organizations and activities in our church. These have included being on

the parish council-Family Life, representing the church on Mission Coalition, teaching religious education, serving as a lector, a song leader, an extraordinary min-ister, and as a greeter. I have been a part of several bi-ble study groups and am a member of the choir. Jack and I have five sons: Brian and his family live in South Carolina, Kevin and his family live in In-dianola, Steven and his wife live in Virginia, Jason lives in Michigan and Brennen is in Newton. My faith is very important in my life. One of the best ways that I can demonstrate this is to serve and support my fellow parishioners in this church and in their faith jour-neys. That is why I would be proud to serve on the parish council.

Sheri Benson Hi! I’m Sheri Benson. I have been a member of Sacred Heart Parish since 1998. I am blessed to have raised two children in this vibrant parish com-munity. Over the years I have had the honor to share in the joys and sorrows of

the lives of many parish friends, just as they have done in my own. As is the case with many of you, I have shared the gifts of time, talent and treasure with Sa-cred Heart as God has invited me to do so. No doubt our gift of time is the one most often seen by others. You have generously allowed me to serve you as a Eu-charistic Minister, Hospitality Minister and now Lec-tor. I have joined you in stewardship by leading the Stewardship Commission and asking you for money for diocesan appeals and the capitol campaign. I have been honored to represent you on the pastoral council as a commission chair and have even served as the council president. After time away to refresh and re-charge, I am answering “yes” to the request to present myself to the Sacred Community as an at large repre-sentative to our pastoral council. If our parish feels it is time for me to rejoin this leadership team, it will be an honor to serve.

Cindy Humke

My name is Cindy Humke and I have been a member of Sacred Heart Church for over 25 years. My husband Dave and I have three adult children, Justin, Ryan and Valerie. I have been involved in various areas of the parish,

such as Family Life Commission, Sacred Heart Soci-ety, Secretary for the Pastoral Council and I continue to serve as an Extraordinary Minister. I would be happy to serve as an at large member of the Pastoral Council.

A New Language for A New Generation

Theology of the Body for Teens: Young Adolescent Edition is a program aimed at the unique situation of young Catholics from 8th to 10th grades. The au-thors use engaging sto-ries, real-life examples and interviews, activi-ties, and questions framed by the culture so relevant to middle school students. The program brings the wis-dom and clarity of Pope John Paul II’s Theol-ogy of the Body to the hearts of minds of young Catholics. Theology of the Body for Teens is an exciting and dynamic program, being offered to incom-ing 8th – 10th grade youth at Sacred Heart on Wednesday evenings beginning June 20th. This program will give youth the answers and the tools they need to successfully and safely navi-gate through life. Parents can find out more information on the program by attending a Par-ent Information Meeting at 7 p.m., Wednes-day, June 13, 2012 in McCann Center or by visiting www.TOBforTeens.com/Parents. The Library’s Latest

Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s col-umn of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items in the library. The parish library has some books and many DVDs in Spanish for both children and adults. The librarian is available after both weekend Masses to gladly assist you in selecting some. The Blessed Mother, Mary, is the Patroness of the United States under the title of the Immaculate Concep-tion. While this doctrine of the Immaculate Conception has been accepted by the church from its beginning, it was hotly debated in the 13th century by the Franciscans and Dominicans. It was the Franciscan, theolo-gian, Duns Scotus who laid the ground work for the formal proclamation of this dogma. In the award winning DVD: Blessed Duns Sco-tus: Defender of the Immaculate Concep-tion, we see this humble, courage apostle of the Faith stand up to anti-Catholic government of the time and the suffering he experienced. A powerful drama, beautifully filmed in some of the ancient monasteries of Europe. The Library is open after weekend Masses or by appointment. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

dear Padre Is Baptism by Immersion Better?

Why do some churches baptize by pouring water on the forehead and others by immersion? Is one way better than the other?

Lynelle

Dear Lynelle, In terms of what baptism means and accom-plishes — escape from sin and death into the life of the Risen Jesus — immersion is no better than pouring. But in the dramatic power of the symbol of the water, immer-sion is better. The power of the sacrament of baptism is not from the method of bringing the water into play, but from the direction given to the pouring or the immersion by the words of Jesus, who commanded us to baptize “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit,” (Matthew 28:19). Saint Paul said, “Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in new-ness of life” (Romans 6:3-4). Down into the death of Jesus, and up again to a new life. Even on the level of Symbol and drama, a trickle of water is still water. It still means and symbolizes life, as in drinking and cooling. It also symbolizes death, as in a hurricane or a drowning. This union of words and wa-ter in the Church makes this action the sacrament of bap-tism.
