PASTOR ’S COLUMN
Maggie Sue’s
DOGmatic THEOLOGY
Recently, sitting at my Sheltie
desk, I received a request if I
would (could) explain the gospel
verses which imply Jesus had
brothers and sisters. It’s a good thing
Shelties are able to understand Greek,
Hebrew and Aramaic and explain Semantics
and what the gospel writers are really saying.
So….
The Catholic Church teaches that Jesus did
not have blood brothers and sisters. The
problem arises because we read in Mark
about the crowd asking, "Isn't this the
carpenter, the son of Mary, a brother of
James and Joses and Judas and Simon?
Aren't his sisters our neighbors here?" (Mk
6:3). A similar reference occurs earlier in Mk
3:31 — "His mother and brothers arrived...."
At first hearing, the words seem to state that
Jesus did indeed have blood brothers and
sisters. But the Greek word adelphos, was
used to describe brothers not born of the
same parents, like a half-brother or step-
brother. The word also described other
relationships like cousins, nephews, etc. In
Hebrew and Aramaic languages, no special
word existed for cousin, nephew, half-brother,
or step-brother. So, they used the word
brother in all these cases. The Greek
translation of the Hebrew texts used the word
adelphos.
Jesus further states “Whoever does the will of
God is my brother, and sister, and mother”
was actually a compliment to his mother who
had always listened to the word of God and
obeyed it. Jesus was declaring, “Blessed are
those who hear and keep the word of God as
she is faithfully doing." (Vatican II, Lumen
Gentium, 58) Jesus was also using the
occasion to teach the congregation a new
lesson about their relationship with God.
Being a disciple of Jesus, or a Christian, is
first and foremost a relationship – a
relationship of love and unity with God the
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and with all who
belong to God as His children. Jesus has
changed the order of relationships and shows
us here that true kinship is not just a matter
of flesh and blood. God’s gracious gift to us is
His adoption of us as His sons and
daughters.
So this begs the question of your own
relationship with Jesus!! And doing the will of
our Father!!! Now, I’m trying to teach the
squirrels Aramaic??!!!!
A Blessed day indeed here at Sacred Heart Cathedral this week with so many things to celebrate!
HAPPY FATHERS DAY A special day to recognize and pay tribute to all the Dads in
our parish and community. For so many reasons we must recognize the role of
the father in our lives. Did you know studies have found that if a father does not
go to church – no matter how faithful his wife’s devotions – only one child in 50
will become a regular worshipper? If a father does go regularly, regardless of the
practice of the mother, between two-thirds and three-quarters of their children
will become churchgoers (regular and irregular). One of the reasons suggested
for this distinction is that children tend to take their cues about domestic life from
Mom while their conceptions of the world outside come from Dad. If Dad takes
faith in God seriously, then the message to their children is that God should be
taken seriously. May God bless all our fathers, dads, grandfathers, stepfathers,
godfathers…..
30th Anniversary of my own Ordination, another reason to celebrate! When did
that happen as it seems just a short time ago that Bishop Larry Soens ordained
me to the Diocese of Sioux City… (I was actually working in Carroll, Iowa and with
2 brother priests in Davenport it seemed appropriate at the time to stay in Sioux
City). With my parents aging, it seemed I was being called to return to my native
Diocese, so after 10 years a priest in NW Iowa I incardinated back to Davenport in
2001. It’s been a wonderful 30 years as a priest and I’m honored to be Bishop
Zinkula’s Rector here at Sacred Heart Cathedral. It’s especially humbling to see
and recognize all that has occurred through these last 7 years of my tenure at
Sacred Heart. Indeed, a lot to be proud of!!
And tomorrow, June 18, Maggie Sue turns 11 years old!! Little Maggs, I contend,
follows a long list of Margarets here at Sacred Heart! Beginning with Davenport’s
founder and builder of our original church, Antoine LeClaire named that church
St. Margaret of Scotland after his wife Marguerite. After being named the
Cathedral of the newly established Davenport Diocese in 1856, St. Margaret’s
became Sacred Heart Cathedral, a title stemming from the devotion of the Sacred
Heart given to St. Margaret of Alacoque. We have a great deal to be proud of here
and our Sheltie Mascot is proud to welcome one and all at our doors and always glad
to have you around! Happy Birthday, Margaret Sue, aka Maggs!
Rest and Relaxation I remember several weeks ago I put a cute little quip in the
bulletin about priests and vacations; that if a priest was a good priest he needed
a vacation and if he was a bad priest the people needed a vacation!! I’m not sure
which category you might place me, in but this week I am taking off till next week
for a few days R/R.
Finally – something to think about this week: In a restaurant, a family of five
bowed their heads in prayer before beginning to eat. One of the children, a girl of
about ten, expressed thanks for the entire family in a hushed voice, her head
bobbing expressively. A few moments later a couple, on their way to pay their
check, paused at the family's table. "It's been a long time since we've seen
anyone do that," said the man, extending his hand to the father. The father smiled
and replied, "It was strange at first, but we always express thanks at home before
we eat. The children continued it when we went to restaurants, so we just went
along with it, and now it's our way." The woman who had come up to the table
patted the little girl on the shoulder and, obviously touched, looked at the mother
and said, "Don't ever stop. It means a lot to those around you." It seems like such
a little thing, but it was a witness. The seeds of the kingdom are little, and we are
called to scatter them.
Have a great and wonderful week!! Fr. Rich

Dear All Saints Catholic School Families, The Davenport Public School Board approved the bell time for all the schools last night (both public and private) at their board meeting. The public school district approved these changes as they want to save $300,000 to their busing budget.
All Saints Catholic School will begin at 7:40 am, with Before School Care beginning at 6:30 am with supervision. Breakfast will be served beginning at 7:00 am.
Student Drop Off for those not using the breakfast program will begin with supervision on the playground at 7:15 am and the Tardy Bell will ring at 7:40 am.
Our school day will end at 2:30 pm. We are grateful to the Davenport Public School System that they are continuing busing for all of our students that are eligible for this service. After Care will continue to run immediately after school until 5:30 pm.
Thank you for sending your children to All Saints Catholic School and I so look forward to seeing all of you in August! Mrs. Von Feldt

Summer Walking
Program Update Patty Riefe, Parish Nurse
We just finished our first week in the Walking Program and we averaged
80,841 steps! Way to go!
Please remember to log your steps on the board in the Gathering Space when you come to
Mass each week. You are all doing an awesome job!
We are getting healthier step by step!
The beautiful marble statue of the Sacred Heart has been moved to the West Vestibule. This has
been done for several reasons!! We are blessed that each entrance of SHC has an image of the
Sacred Heart. It has been noted that as one walks into the Gathering Space they are greeted by the
beautiful statue donated from Genesis West (former Mercy Hospital) and then walk past another
statue in the East Vestibule. The redundancy is apparent; therefore the presence in the West
Vestibule seems appropriate. Plus the West Vestibule provides a more conducive place for devotions
and prayers. How beautiful!!
