OUR GIFTS TO GOD AND PARISH

July 1, 2018 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today's Gospel offers a rare framework -- a story in a story. Most of the healing miracles are standalone encounters. One person approaches Jesus, demonstrates

faith, and is healed. The evangelist tells the next story. This Gos-pel, however, is different. Jesus is on his way to heal one person, a young girl of twelve, and is interrupted on his journey by "a woman afflicted with hemorrhages." She bravely approaches Jesus in a crowd, despite being ritually unclean from her bleed-ing, and stretches out to touch his cloak. She is healed! Jesus meets her eye, confirms her faith, and continues on to resurrect the young girl. Reading this passage, it might be easier to identify with one sto-ry -- the long-suffering woman or the young, innocent girl -- and to move past the other. But here they sit side by side. The girl is twelve. The woman has been suffering for twelve years. For the Gospel writers, number parallels have deep symbolic meaning. Between the woman and the young girl, we are not one or the other. We are both. None of us had a perfect childhood, perfect families, or a perfect peer group. As we endure pain, disap-pointment, or unmet expectations, it can feel like a part of our childhood hopes have died. Our coping mechanisms, social adap-tations, and hidden secrets can make us the "walking wounded" in some respects. Jesus wants to do more than simply staunch the bleeding. His healing hand makes dead things come alive. He awakens the dreams that are asleep. This process requires pray-er, conversations with trusted community and spiritual mentors, and critical looks at difficult areas of our life. However, we can believe the words of our Lord. If we approach Jesus in faith, be-lieving that he wants to heal and save, we, too, will hear his calming words spoken over the hurts of our life. "I say to you, arise!" "Go in peace."

Religious Freedom Week Prayer: “O God, you willed that the Jewish people be free from slavery by their Egyptian captors. You will that all people should be free to worship you without fear and to celebrate their religious beliefs freely, even if they have not yet found you. Grant that those of us who live in this great nation will thank you daily for our freedom, and work for the freedom of others around the world who do not yet have the freedom to prac-tice their faith openly and proudly. We seek your wisdom where hatred abounds, and ask for humility to offer our good works to others who live in fear and bondage. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who frees us from sin and death through the wood of the cross. Amen.

Missouri Abortion Provider will No Longer Receive Medi-

caid Reimbursements By Jennifer Brinker in the St. Louis Re-

view. An end to Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood

in Missouri is one of several ways pressure is being put on the

abortion provider in recent weeks. The measure is part of a $28

billion budget plan that is expected to be signed by Gov. Mike

Parson, and the latest major pro-life measure since the passage of

SB5, a comprehensive bill that pro-life groups have said protects

the health and safety of women and unborn children and provides

protections for pregnancy resource centers. "Despite having one of

the most comprehensive pro-life bills passed in a decade, state

lawmakers continued to make advances in pro-life legislation in the

areas of defending abortion providers and promoting alternatives

to abortion," said Deacon Sam Lee, a pro-life lobbyist with Cam-

paign Life Missouri. "It shows they are not willing to rest on previ-

ous legislation, but realize the unborn and pregnant women need

more assistance."
