2011 ANNUAL BISHOP’S APPEAL—COMMITMENT WEEKEND!

As Commitment Weekend for the 2011 Annual Bishop’s Appeal is now upon us, please remember Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give, than to receive” when you are making your financial commitment. All parishion-ers of Sacred Heart are encouraged to prayerfully consider making a commitment as we Celebrate Our Blessings. The goal of the diocese is $875,000 and with everyone’s support, it is a very achievable goal. All parishioners are asked to return their personalized commit-ment cards at Mass this weekend, or you may simply mail your commitment to the diocese in the provided envelope. Sacred Heart’s goal this year is $60,000. We have always exceeded expectations. Let’s do so again this year! If you would like more information about the 2011 Annual Bishop’s Appeal, please contact the diocesan Office of Stewardship and Development at 850-3155 or visit www.htstewardship.org.

SEEKING THE LIGHT In today’s readings we find ourselves being drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he strug-gles with the news of his cousin John’s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to

Capernaum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes, “the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land over-shadowed by death / light has arisen” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin’s death, perhaps his own death, and he

seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his withdrawal and into action. He be-gins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and pro-claim the gospel of the kingdom. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

January 8/9, 2011 Envelopes: $7431.30 Loose: $1475.00 $8906.30 Maintenance: $3869.00

WEEKEND READINGS First Reading — The burdens that were once laid upon the people have been vanquished (Isaiah 8:23 — 9:3). Psalm — The Lord is my light and my salvation (Psalm 27). Second Reading — Paul exhorts the believers at Cor-inth: As there is one Christ, so too must there be no divi-sions among you. (1 Corin-thians 1:10-13, 17). Gospel — After calling his first disciples, Jesus goes throughout Galilee teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and curing the people of their illnesses

FEAST OF FAITH: Penitential Rite Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins and faults and failings. But the penitential rite is really less about our sins than it is about God’s mercy. It is not a time for individual confession, like a mini-sacrament of reconciliation. It is, rather, a prepara-tory rite, preparing us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the miraculous catch of fish—when he realizes who is in the boat with him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with the words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the Lord’s presence, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness. The penitential rite of the Mass takes sev-eral forms, from the traditional Confiteor or “I con-fess” to a litany, spoken or sung by the deacon or cantor with responses by the entire assembly. The penitential rite always includes the words Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison—Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. This ancient Greek prayer came to the Roman liturgy from the East, and still echoes in many of the litanies of the Eastern Rite Churches. These words turn our gaze from our own weakness to the gentleness, the kindness, the forgiving love of Christ. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
