Congratulations Father Chris Hassel! Father Hassel was ordained a priest yesterday, June 30, 2018. This is great. But, the path he took to reach this point is very interesting. Father Chris didn’t just wake up one morning as a teenager and say I want to be a priest. His road was filled with distractions and uncertainty. He graduated from college and rather than enter the civilian work force as planned, he joined the Air Force. He spent time in Iraq and Afghanistan and then got stationed here at Robins Air Force Base. While here he started attending Sacred Heart and the quiet voice from the past about being

a priest started to get louder. He left the Air Force and stayed here. Meanwhile this voice continued to get louder. In 2010 Fr Chris applied for the seminary. In 2011 he entered the seminary, and as they say, the rest is history. It was as if Fr Chris had a plan for his life, but his plan kept getting interrupted. Our Gospel today has a similar theme. Jesus was preparing to preach when Jairus, an official from the synagogue, asked Him to go with him to his home to cure his critically ill daughter. Can you imagine the frustration of Jesus in being called away from His ministry of preaching, but Jesus responded to the man’s plea. As Jesus was starting His journey to Jairus’ home He is interrupted again. A woman in the crowd touched His cloak. When Jesus found out who had touched Him, He told her that her faith had cured her. Jesus then continued to Jairus’ home where He told the little girl to “get up”. This tells us that as He was on a mission to preach, He still had time for people, both important, like Jairus, the synagogue official, as well as this poor woman whose name we don’t even know. In all of this Jesus was doing the will of His Father. As Father Chris was journeying through his life Jesus was calling him. Sometimes his path must have been quite uncertain, but he continued on. I’m sure that with his ordination some of the confusion from his past is now clear. Father Chris followed the call of Jesus. The message in all of this is that Jesus is calling all of us to do His Father’s work. Our job is to open our hearts, listen to His call, and follow Him.

Congratulations to Father Chris Hassel! Fr. Chris was ordained a priest on Sat,

June 30, 2018, at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah. Sacred Heart is

Fr. Chris’s home parish. Join us in celebrating at a reception in his honor

after the 9:00am Mass this weekend in the Social Hall. All are welcome!

“…as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality.” -2 Corinthians 8:14 We are responsible not only for our own lives, but for the lives of those around us. It is important that we not only grow, nurture and share our gifts; but that we also teach our children and encourage others to do the same. This is the communal aspect of our Catholic faith. We are the “Body of Christ”. We are called to be dependent on each other and not live in isolation.

zone. If an emergency arises, it would be critical that this area would be completely clear for emergency vehicles to

gain access to the building. Thank you!

ACCIDENTS WILL HAPPEN OCCASIONALLY

You have seen it. A host slips out of the hand receiving it. Or a drop or two

of the precious blood escapes the edge of the chalice, especially when the communicant is giving it back to the minister. So what do we do? In the

case of the host, pick it up. If the communicant wants that host, give it to him or her. PLEASE take note of where the host landed so we can go back later and wipe the

area. If the communicant does not want that host, either consume it yourself or take it to the altar for proper

disposal later. Then proceed as usual. If some of the precious blood is spilled, pause and cover the spill with your purificator. Indicate to the communicant to wait a moment. A replacement purificator can be found either

on the altar or in the drawer of the rolling cart. Once you have a fresh purificator, resume offering the chalice to the communicants in your line. In both cases, we will

attend to the proper cleaning and purification of the area of the spill after mass is over. Make sure you leave the

purificator over the spill until mass is over.

Over 65 parishioners of all ages came out Saturday, June 16 to conduct a very successful campus cleanup day. Among the many actions, trees were felled, bushes were pruned, brush was cleared, windows were scrubbed, and pine straw was laid. One team painted the curb along the south side drop-off yellow, so please “No Parking” here. The results were matched only by the fellowship and parish community building, which culminated in a pizza lunch for the crew. Many thanks to all who participated!
