Dear Sacred Heart Parish Family!
Praised be Jesus and Mary! Our time together is rapidly drawing to a

falling deeper in love with Our Lord and Lady. Please accept my
apologies for all my faults, shortcomings, long sermons, and anything
else that I may have said or done which hurt anyone. Be assured that
you will always have a special place in my thoughts and prayers,
especially at Holy Mass, and know that I am never more than a phone

New Study on Cultural Diversity Displays Catholic
Church’s Growing Multicultural Parish Population
Culturally diverse parishes are the fastest growing type of
parish in the United States, according to a report on
Cultural Diversity in Catholic parishes, presented by
Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller of San Antonio,
chairman of the U.S. Bishops' Committee on Cultural
Diversity in the Church.
The Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate
(CARA) conducted the two phase study, commissioned by
the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' Secretariat on
Cultural Diversity. "The Catholic Church in the United
States has always been a very diverse entity, but it is the
first time that all available data was brought together to
map this diversity nationwide in remarkable detail," said
Archbishop García-Siller. "It is also the first time that
parish life was looked at from the point of view of the
experience of diversity. Multicultural parishes are a
growing phenomenon in the United States. This is what
makes this study so fascinating and ground-breaking."
The first phase identified the populations and parishes in
the United States that are known to serve specific racial,
ethnic, cultural, and/or linguistic groups communities
using a variety of sources. In all, 6,332 (36 percent) of
parishes were identified as multicultural or as serving
particular groups of Catholics.
The second phase consisted of in-pew surveys in
multicultural parishes across the U.S. Over 11,100 adults
completed the survey with topics ranging from race,
primary language spoken at home, marital status,
sacramental life, parishioner attitudes about cultural
diversity, parish understanding of different cultures,
welcoming of new parishioners, interacting with priests of
different cultural backgrounds, staff reflection of cultural
diversity of parishioners, tension between different
cultural groups, among other topics. To facilitate and
encourage participation, the study was translated into 20
languages at the request of the local pastors.
Some of the key findings, as they relate to religious
practices include:
The largest segment of parishioners in
multicultural parishes (37 percent) are of the Post-
Vatican II Generation (born 1961 to 1981), and
are between the ages of 34 and 54.
Those with school-age children in multicultural
and ethnic communities are much more likely to
enroll children in a Catholic school than the
general Catholic population. Enrollment is most
common among multi-racial and Vietnamese
respondents, and is least common among foreign-
born Hispanic or Latino parents.
Regarding religious participation, 83 percent of
respondents have received their First Communion
and 77 percent have been confirmed.
76 percent consider themselves "active Catholics."
Nine percent are "returned Catholics" who may
have left the faith for a period of time and have
now returned. Eight percent indicate they are
"converts" to Catholicism. Two percent are "non-
Catholics," most often attending Mass with a
Catholic relative. Five percent are "inactive
Catholics."
67 percent of respondents are registered with their
parish and 83 percent say this is their primary
place of worship.
U.S. born black or African American respondents
are most likely to be personally involved in
multiple ministries or activities (other than Mass
attendance).
Stay tuned for further findings in next week’s edition.

MUSIC
ANDREA SORENSON
SINGING IN CHURCH
With guidance from the CDC and the Diocese of Madison,
as the aspiration from singing is greater than speaking, at
this time the congregation is being asked to refrain from
singing during public masses. This gives a rare
opportunity for parishioners to spend extra time reflecting
on the prayers while we allow the cantor to give voice to
the prayer in our hearts. Psalms and hymns will be sung
by a cantor while, for the time being, Mass parts are being
spoken.
CANTORS AND CHOIR MEMBERS
Each public Mass can have one cantor so your musical
ministry can get back on track! If you are a cantor we will
be starting back up again and if you are a choir member
that feels comfortable cantoring please consider signing
up on the communication that you received by email.

JUSTICE AND PEACE
Racism, Global Pandemic, Climate Change, and Plight of
Detained Immigrants. Our world is really in a mess. As I
pondered all of this, I said to myself what can I say in the
Bulletin? Then it dawned on me, let me draw on some
positives that have come out of all of these negatives. Are
there really any positives? Yes, I believe there are.
Racism – The horrific death of a black man: Finally it hits
us right between the eyes the way people of color have
been mistreated for centuries and now is the time to
change all of that and already the government is putting
into operation changes of the way people of color are
treated. There is beginning to be a realization that we are
all created equal. It will take time but it is beginning.
What can we do? We must check our own hearts and see
if we hold some attitudes that must change and then work
to foster changes in our world.
Climate Change – Diane Wilson, operated a shrimp boat
out of Antonia Bay and noticed that Formosa Plastics
were spewing out PVC pellets into the Gulf. PVC pellets
contain endocrine disrupters that can pervert the sex
hormones of fish, frogs, humans, and other animals. She
persevered for 30 years fighting the company, “city hall”
paid-off politicians, and others but finally won the court
battle and the corporation was fined and “cleaned up its
act”. None of us is a Diane Wilson. But, we do help our
environment by recycling, limiting our use of plastics,
failure to support corporations who pollute the water or
air, and in many other ways.
Global Pandemic – It has caused us to realize how
connected we are and how important it is to help one
another. The dedication of those who help the victims of
the virus fills us with hope.
Plight of Detained Immigrants – Volunteers from our area
who have gone to the border to assist with food and other
needs. The lawyers, one from our area, who struggle to be
sure the rights of the immigrants are protected. DACA
has been restored by the courts!
God is in charge and that’s why I have hope for our world!

HELP THOSE IN NEED
Help St. Vincent de Paul “Keep People in their Homes:”
Now that the moratorium on rental evictions has ended,
many people who have been unemployed for the past
several months are finding it impossible to make their rent
payments and are facing eviction. We do not need more
homeless people during this pandemic. St. Vince de Paul
is making a great effort to assist these people, but
unfortunately the need is greater than our financial
resources. Therefore we are appealing to people in the
area to assist us in our “Keep People in their Homes”
effort. If you are able to help, please make your check or
money order payable to St. Vincent de Paul, mark it “for
rent only”, and mail to St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 13,
Reedsburg, WI 53959. Show your appreciation for the
security of being safe in your own home by helping those
who are not as fortunate. Thank you in advance for your
generosity.
