A History of Our Parish The newly –created Sacred Heart Parish covered a large territory. The original parish boundary encompassed Lassen and Modoc Counties—a region comprising some 8,500 square miles (equivalent to the size of the state of Maryland) with a Catholic population sparsely dispersed throughout this vast rural territory. Father Philip J. O’Reilly was the first priest assigned to Sacred Heart Parish, coming from Marysville, California. Father O’Reilly established residence at Alturas, where a parish existed briefly in the early 1880s. Locally the news of Father O’ Reilly’s assignment to the new parish was reported in the Lassen Weekly Mail of December 15, 1911, which was stated: “The Alturas papers speak very highly of Father O’Reilly and state he has made a very favorable impression upon the people of that place.”
