Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,

As we near the end of Term 3, the completion of the academic year is rapidly approaching for our Year 12

students. Completing secondary education is a significant event in the lives of young people. There are no

doubt mixed feelings with some looking forward to life after school with great excitement, while for others

there is a sense of apprehension as they prepare to leave the certainty of school life and embark on their

future. Whatever the future holds for each of our graduates, we are confident that they have developed the

necessary skills to successfully contribute to their community and to create their own future within it.

As the intensity of completing the academic requirements of each course culminates with final assessments

and examinations, there are also a number of key events that we look forward to in order to celebrate the

achievements of the Class of 2020. This Examination and Graduation Guide provides details associated with

the dates, times and expectations for students and families during this busy time. Some of the key dates

include;

• WEDNESDAY 21 OCTOBER - Year 12 Graduation Mass (7.00pm, Marist Hall, Br Joseph McAteer Centre)

• THURSDAY 22 OCTOBER

- Locker clean out and return un-required textbooks

- Graduation Assembly (2.00pm)

- Year 12 student celebration in Walter Park (3.30pm)

• MONDAY 26 OCTOBER - FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER - Exam preparation week

• FRIDAY 20 NOVEMBER - last day to return Textbooks and Library Books

• FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER - Graduation Ceremony and Celebration (4.30pm arrival for 5.00pm start, Marist

Hall, Br Joseph McAteer Centre)

The staff at Sacred Heart College look forward to celebrating the hard work and achievements of the Class of

2020 with students and their families over the coming weeks. However, in light of the COVID-safe restrictions,

family attendance at College events will be limited and you will be advised of updated attendance arrangements

on Monday 12 October.

Warm regards,

Steve Byrne

Year 12 students receive a certificate of reference from the College, called a Testimonial. Homeroom Teachers recently emailed students with an online Testimonial Form, which provides the details that are required to write the reference. A Testimonial cannot be prepared unless this form is returned to the student’s Homeroom teacher well before the Graduation Ceremony. The online Testimonial form must be completed by the end of Homeroom on Friday 25 September as the preparation of Testimonials is a time consuming process.

F R I DAY 2 5 S E P T E M B E R

Students are invited to attend any of the scheduled Holiday Work-Back sessions or Holiday Practice Exams. In addition, the Library will be open at certain times. From now onwards, students will be finishing major studies, assignments, completing note preparation for exams and undertaking revision. It is advisable that students organise a study timetable for the Term 3 holidays, so that they study for all subjects, and make the most of this valuable time.

Graduation Assembly in the Marist Hall, followed by the Year 12 Student Celebration in Walter Park.

Our Sacred Heart students are expected to conclude their classes respectfully and with dignity. Like any other school day, unruly behaviour at the conclusion of Graduation Assembly Day will not be tolerated.

Year 12 students are required to be at school at 8.45am, with the lesson order being adjusted to ensure the Year 12 Study Line falls after lunch, not before Recess as normal on this day as follows:

8.45am Homeroom

9am Lesson 1 (Line 2 - brown)

10.20am RECESS

10.40am Lesson 2 (Line 1 - yellow)

12.05pm Lesson 3 (Line 3 - red)

CELEBRATION IN WALTER PARK

Immediately following the Graduation Assembly, Year 12 students will gather in Walter Park for a celebratory function. Students will be able to collect and wear their Year 12 T-shirts and Year 12 Photos after which light refreshments will be on offer.

Entertainment will be supplied in the form of vetted and appropriate concert items from students and staff. Students must register their items with the Organising Committee one week before the event. Care should be taken to ensure that the items are tastefully humorous without being personal ‘put-downs’ of anyone in the school community. Items not registered with the Organising Committee will not be allowed to be staged.

YEAR 12 T-SHIRT/PHOTOGRAPH

The Year 12 Photograph (Cost $25) and the Year 12 T-Shirt (Cost $20) are additional mementos offered to students for purchase. HOMEROOM

There will be no Homeroom for Year 12 students this week.

WILL STUDENTS BE PERMITTED TO GO OFFSITE BETWEEN LESSONS?

Yes, students will be permitted to leave campus during lessons.

STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE ANY SACE EXAMINATIONS:

Formal lessons will not be running for subjects in which there is no written SACE Examination. However, Stage 2 teachers will be available by arrangement to assist students during regular lesson times. Students are encouraged to contact teachers for assistance if required. When on campus, students must be in summer

uniform (no hoodies) and sign in and out at the Front Office. However, students who are working in the

library all day must sign in/out at the library.

STUDENTS WHO DO HAVE ONE OR MORE SACE EXAMINATIONS:

Students are to attend lessons this week to prepare for written SACE Examinations that commence next week. You do not need to attend classes for a subject that does not have a written SACE Examination.

• Revision should be well under way prior to this period and as such, consolidation of knowledge and

exam preparation is now the main focus.

• Students should establish a consistent sleep pattern, they should eat well, schedule in some personal

recreation time, and cut back hours worked in part time jobs. These are important ingredients to

combine with an effective study plan.

• The library will be open from 8am to 4.00pm Monday and Friday and 8am to 4.30pm Tuesday, Wednesday

and Thursday. There will be no extended study on Wednesday.

SCHOOL UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS

Students are expected to wear the school summer uniform at all times when they are at school for their week 3 lessons, examinations, or to return to school to submit work, or to see teachers or for any other reason. Students who are not in uniform will be asked to return when they have changed. Students are not permitted to wear their SHC ‘hoodies’ to school.

CLEARANCE PROCEDURES

Students need to return all Library and Book Hire items well before the Graduation Ceremony. The final day for return of these items is Friday 20 November. Unreturned items will be billed after this. The onus is on all Year 12 students to attend to this task.

LOCKERS

All students are expected to empty their lockers of all contents. Any personal items that remain in lockers after 22 October will be discarded. Any textbooks that are not required for revision purposes must be returned at this time. Students should continue to return textbooks when no longer needed.

MORE INFORMATION - STAGE 2 EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS

All Stage 2 externally assessed examinations (apart from oral examinations and examinations listed in the previous table as “venue TBA”) will be coordinated by Mrs Karen Bailey (Director of Teaching and Learning) and Mrs Gail Morgan (Assistant Head of Marcellin Campus) and will be supervised by exam invigilators at Marcellin Campus.

Students are required to wear full and correct summer uniform (hoodies are NOT permitted). Usual standards relating to jewellery, makeup, hair, grooming and shoes apply. Students who are not in proper uniform may be sent home.

Students with externally assessed exams will receive an examination attendance slip prior to the end of term 3, which shows the exam rules and lists the examination site, dates and times. This slip must be brought to every examination. Students will also receive an examination timetable early in term 4 listing the locations of their exams onsite. Exams will generally be held upstairs in Champagnat Hall, unless otherwise stated on the timetable. Students must check dates, times and locations carefully and ensure that they arrive early.

Students will be required to enter the exam room 15 minutes prior to the published start time. There are a number of administrative tasks that must be undertaken before the exam starts. Please be aware that there is also a seating arrangement.

The externally assessed exams cannot be rescheduled. It is therefore essential that Mrs Karen Bailey is

contacted if any unforeseen circumstances arise prior to the exam on 8350 2500 or preferably via email

[email protected]

e.g. Students who are seriously ill (3 days or more) before an exam or ill on the day of an exam or have had a significant interruption to study in the lead up to exams:• ensure you have spoken to Karen Bailey BEFORE the exam commences• the SACE Board strongly recommend students still attend, even if unwell

• Students who sit the exam when unwell may choose to apply to use a derived exam result by seeing Mrs Bailey at the end of the exam. An appointment to see a doctor the same day must be made (doctor is not to be related to the student). If the application is approved by the SACE Board, the student will receive the better of the two marks. Surprisingly, the vast majority of students who sit the exam when unwell, still do better than their derived result!

Students requiring special provisions for exams for long term conditions should have already contacted

Mrs Bailey. Please contact Mrs Karen Bailey ASAP if this has yet to occur.

For subjects that permit graphics calculators: the memory will be reset (except for Mathematics subjects). Students are permitted to bring 2 calculators. Removable covers and instruction booklets are not permitted. Students must ensure their graphics calculator is on the list of approved models.

Approved calculators: SACE link: www.sace.sa.edu.au/coordinating/admin/information-sheets/49#Approved-calculators

Students are permitted to bring a dictionary, as long as it meets the requirements for approved dictionaries. Supervisors have the authority to check all dictionaries prior to the commencement of the exam. You are not

permitted to bring a thesaurus nor a dictionary with thesaurus entries.

Rules for dictionaries: SACE link:

www.sace.sa.edu.au/studying/assessment/exams/rules#Use-of-calculators-and-dictionaries

The following general rules also apply:

• No bags or pencil cases will be admitted. Stationery must be in a clear plastic bag/sleeve.

• All paper for exams will be supplied. Students are not permitted to have in their possession any notes, blank paper or unauthorised material containing information relevant to the exam. The only exception is for Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics where two unfolded A4 sheets of handwritten notes (not photocopied) are permitted. For General Mathematics and Essential Mathematics, only one A4 sheet is permitted (unfolded, handwritten, not photocopied). Students are permitted to write on both sides of the A4 sheet(s). It is NOT acceptable to laminate notes.

• When the exam time starts, students are encouraged to read texts and questions carefully, plan their answers, and familiarise themselves with the examination before they begin writing the exam proper. This is best practice for exams!

• Students are advised that mobile phones, smart watches or other electronic devices must not be brought into the exam room. The exceptions to this are approved calculators (only for those subjects in which they are permitted) and Biology, Geography, Legal Studies, Modern History, Nutrition, Psychology and English Literary Studies students who are required to bring their fully charged Chromebook/laptop device to their exam. Psychology and Modern History students should also bring hardwired headphones (NOT bluetooth enabled). Mobile phones must be switched off and left securely elsewhere. The College takes no responsibility for the security of mobile phones and smart watches.

• Students requiring assistance (e.g. extra writing paper) or a toilet break should remain seated, raise their hand and wait until an invigilator speaks with them. Under no circumstances should students leave their seat without permission.

• Students are not permitted to communicate with other students throughout the duration of the exam.

• Students must not be guilty of any breach of good order or proprietary (i.e. do not distract others in any way).

Page 10: SACRED HEART COLLEGE YEAR 12 EXAMINATION & GRADUATION

10 SACRED HEART COLLEGE YEAR 12 EXAMINATION & GRADUATION GUIDE 2020

• Students are not permitted to borrow equipment from other students during the exam.

• Students need to use their own judgment to answer questions they are uncertain about. Invigilators are not permitted to give any direction with regard to the exam paper. However, if there is faulty printing on the page, students should alert the invigilator immediately.

• Students are required to remain in the Exam Room until the conclusion of the exam. Students are not permitted to leave early.

• At the end of the exam, students are required to remain seated and silent until all papers have been collected/electronic exams have been submitted and they are formally dismissed.

The expectation is that students will only be present at the College during scheduled exam times. If students are on site at other times, they must register their arrival at the Front Office. Students must be dressed in

full and correct summer uniform (no hoodies) when on College grounds.

TEXTBOOK AND LIBRARY BOOK RETURNS

All textbooks and library books should be returned when no longer required for study purposes, or no later than Friday 20 November. Overdue accounts will be sent home after this date.

ADJUSTMENT FACTORS (PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS BONUS POINTS)

The South Australian Tertiary Admissions Centre (SATAC) administers two Adjustment Factor schemes based on rules provided by its member universities. The two schemes are the Universities Equity Scheme and the Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Scheme.

The Universities Equity Scheme awards 5 points for eligible students, and the Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme awards 2 or 4 points for eligible students. An individual student can receive a maximum of 9 additional points under both schemes.

Any adjustment factors will be added to the university aggregate from which selection ranks are calculated. The selection rank will then be the score which corresponds to the revised aggregate.

Selection ranks inclusive of adjustment factors do not appear on the Tertiary Entrance Statement (TES) issued to SACE/NTCET students because they are only specific to SA/NT courses/programs. Students can see their adjusted rank via the SATAC website when checking their offer status.

CONCLUSION

The class of 2020 deserve to be congratulated on the way they have successfully navigated a very unusual and at times disruptive year. It is with great excitement that we prepare for key end-of-year celebrations. Our senior students are in their final stages of schooling and we encourage them to maintain their focus in the coming weeks. Throughout the year all Year 12 students have been frequently reminded that they are the role-models of the College. As such, their conduct over the final weeks should remain of the highest standard.

It is important that students manage their departure from the school in a dignified and memorable way. This time should be spent recognising the value of other people whose companionship has been enjoyed over recent years. It can be an enjoyable time for all and whilst it is understandable that it is a time to celebrate the completion of secondary schooling, it is not an occasion to resort to the consumption of alcohol or other drugs, criticism of school personnel, disregard for school property or damage to the reputation of Sacred Heart College in the community.

We ask both parents and students to work cooperatively with teachers in trying to meet the aforementioned expectations.-

We wish our Year 12 students every success in their future endeavours. We are confident that as graduates of Sacred Heart College, they are well equipped to achieve the successes they aspire to. They should be very proud of the young adults they have become and we are absolutely certain they will add great value to our local and broader community.
