  • As a result of the need to vacate the campus on 8 December, classes for all students at the Middle School will conclude on Thursday 7 December. On the evening of 7 December, the Year 9 students will celebrate their rite of passage from the Middle to the Senior School by way of a special event at the McAteer Centre at Somerton Park. As you'd appreciate, we are working to a tight timeframe and are wanting to commence and complete the Champagnat project prior to classes commencing in 2019.   • MIDDLE SCHOOL

    From the Head of Middle School Next Friday (17 November) we will celebrate our last ever Mass in the Chapel at the Middle School - a place that holds many special memories for students, staff and our community of Marist brothers, especially as it was their Chapel when they lived in at the Mitchell Park Campus. If you have a special connection with the Chapel and would like to celebrate the Mass with us, please email me at [email protected] or contact the front Office on 8276 7877 and we can add you to the list. Much of the original stone work featured in the Chapel will be used in the new Champagnat Campus, which will help to keep the memories and traditions alive of the humble beginnings of the campus. As per the Principal’s article, just a reminder that the last day for all students this year will be Thursday 7 December. This will allow staff time to move and set up in new spaces as demolition and removal work will begin the following Monday. Please mark this in your calendar. Reports will be distributed for students in Years 6, 7 and 8 at normal dismissal time (3.15 pm) on that Thursday. Year 9 students will receive their reports that evening at their Rite of Passage/Graduation Ceremony to be held in the Br McAteer Centre at the Senior School. Details of this event will be communicated to families soon. Thursday 7 December will also be when we hold our End of Year Mass (10am in the gym) and our final Academic Assembly (11.30am in the gym). The final assembly will also acknowledge the students in each year level who have won significant awards (parents/caregivers of these students will be contacted prior) It is a very busy time in the life of our school as we approach the end of the year. I would encourage you to have genuine conversations with your son about his final assessment tasks to ensure well-earned academic results in his last formal report of the year.   • Lateness and Absenteeism - Be aware of the impact All too often there are legitimate reasons why students are late to school in the morning or who are absent from school for reasons such as sickness, appointments, holidays, sleeping in, the traffic was bad, running late. However on occasions, there are underlying reasons for lateness or absenteeism that are more of a concern, such as struggles with relationships or school work, being harassed, feeling anxious. These reasons for lateness or absenteeism can remain undetected or are not reported to the school by parents/caregivers. Some of the effects experienced by students who arrive late or are absent include:

    • Gaps in knowledge and understanding, resulting in discrepancies in learning and fundamental concepts. • Lack of continuity and familiarity resulting in students feeling less secure within the school environment. • Loss of opportunities for interaction with peers which improves social, emotional and cognitive development. • Missed opportunity to become familiar with societal standards, such as class rules and behavioural norms. • Lack of understanding of the importance in attendance and punctuality. • Inability to maintain friendships, resulting in isolation and possibly leading to being bullied/victimised. • Loss of self-esteem and self-confidence. • Increased likelihood of school refusal and leaving school early.

    Due to these factors the College is reviewing its response to lateness and absenteeism and is working towards developing a clear process. As a part of this process you may receive a phone call from your child’s Homeroom teacher or a letter from the Year Level Leader of Wellbeing if you child is frequently late or absent. This is a pastoral response to ensure that everything is okay. This is also an opportunity for you to discuss with the Homeroom teacher or Leader of Wellbeing any underlying reason for your child’s lateness or absence. Our hope is that by improving our direct communication with parents/caregivers, we will maximise students’ exposure to learning and improve academic and social outcomes.   • Supporting children less fortunate this Christmas The Middle School will be starting our Vinnies Christmas Appeal. We are asking students to bring in a present they themselves would like to get that will be given to a boy who lives in a family where he would otherwise not get anything. The gift must be one that does not have ongoing costs (e.g. nothing with batteries or electronic). The gift must not be wrapped as Vinnies knows the families and will endeavour to give the boys in each family a gift they know they would like.     From the Head of the Senior School Stage 2 Examinations Year 12 students commenced their exams on Monday of this week, commencing with a 3 hour Biology exam. Today the students sit the new Essential Maths (2 hours), General Mathematics (2 hours) and Mathematical Methods (3 hours) examinations. Another new Stage 2 subject, English Literary Studies, had an exam on Tuesday (90 minutes). I am delighted to report that a large number of Stage 2 students have been working in the College library during their SWOT VAC week and between exams. They have been able to readily access their teachers and to focus intensely on their revision. In addition, we have hired the services of Old Scholar, Sam Laube, to assist Mathematics and Physics students prepare for their final examinations. Good luck to all students! Year 12 Student Leaders for 2018 Camp Last Sunday and Monday the newly elected Student Leaders for 2018 participated in a 2-day Leadership Camp at West Beach Caravan Park. The facilitator was Steve Lacy from Leading Teams who took the group of 30 young leaders through a highly engaging program of leadership training and team building. Over the course of 2018 you will hear plenty from this wonderful group of young people. They developed key themes and strategies for 2018 and worked together incredibly well. Marist Day Celebrations Congratulations to the Year 11 Student Leaders who organised a terrific program for the inaugural Senior School Marist Day last Wednesday. Our students enjoyed the activities that were on offer, and especially enjoyed the food that was available for purchase. The $2,430 raised from this event will go to the communities that the Marist Immersion Teams will visit in November/December this year. There was a real sense of House spirit and it was very impressive the way our Year 11 leaders worked together to prepare, organise and lead the various stalls and activities. They should feel very proud of their achievements and confident with the leadership skills they have developed throughout the year. We thank Katherine, Kristen and Bec from the Own It Project for the work they have undertaken with our Year 11 leadership group this year and look forward to continuing this partnership in 2018.   • From the Director of Teaching & Learning IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS STUDYING STAGE 2 SUBJECTS THIS YEAR Students have been emailed the following information. STAGE 2 (YEAR 12) RESULTS - this includes Year 11 students studying Stage 2 Religion Stage 2 SACE results are expected to be available through Students Online on Tuesday 19 December from 8.30 am. Official documentation (including SACE Certificate and Record of Achievement) will arrive in accordance with local, national and international postal delivery schedules. For more information about SACE results, visit the My Results section on the SACE website. Students should check their address is correct by logging onto Students Online to ensure documentation is posted to the correct address. Students need their SACE registration number and PIN to log on. If they have never logged in before (unlikely I would hope) the PIN is the first 4 digits of the student's birthday (e.g. 3rd January would have PIN 0301). The PIN will be changed after the first log in (may have already changed if logged in previously). The PIN can be reset from this page if necessary. Stage 2 results will be sent to the address recorded on Students Online in December. Please email Deborah Hearl ([email protected]) by 30 November at the latest with the correct address if it is wrong. Year 12 students applying for courses through SATAC should ensure that their postal address and email is correct when they log on to SATAC - this is SEPARATE to SACE - else they won't receive course offers.     Students expecting to complete a Certificate III this year that can count towards the ATAR must ensure I receive the required documentation by 30 November at the very latest. STAGE 2 EXAMS - IMPORTANT INFORMATION SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR YEAR 12 EXAMS Students who are seriously ill (3 days or more) before an exam or ill on the day of an exam or have had a significant interruption to study in the lead up to exams:

    • should contact me ASAP by email at [email protected] • ensure you have spoken to me BEFORE the exam commences • the SACE Board strongly recommend students still attend, even if unwell • students who sit the exam when unwell may choose to apply to use their moderated predicted exam mark by

    seeing me at the end of the exam. An appointment to see a doctor the same day must be made (doctor is not to be related to the student). If the application is approved by the SACE Board, the student will receive the better of the two marks.

    Surprisingly, the vast majority of students who sit the exam when unwell, still do better than their moderated predicted mark!

  • Year 12 SACE Board written examinations commenced at Sacred Heart on Monday 6 November. Students received an exam attendance slip and exam timetable with dates, times and locations in addition to rules relating to sitting the exam. Students must familiarise themselves with these rules and ensure that they know exactly what equipment they are/are not permitted to take into the exam room. Students should also familiarise themselves with the instructions on the front cover of each of their exams (distributed by class teachers and also accessible at the SACE Board website). I would particularly like to point out that students are not permitted to have a mobile phone or smart watch in their possession and hence these items should not be brought into the examination room. Ideally exam attendance slips should be brought to each exam. I don't have extra copies so cannot do anything to assist if it has been lost or forgotten. It will not be the end of the world if a student forgets to bring it. It is a bit like a driver's licence - unlikely that I need to check it unless there is a problem! Pencil cases, calculator covers (if a calculator is permitted) and other paper (unless approved notes for Mathematics exams) are also not to be brought into the exam room. If students are permitted to bring a calculator for one or more of their exams, it must be on the list of approved calculators. Likewise, any dictionaries need to be on the list of approved dictionaries. The links below will take you to the lists of approved calculators and dictionaries: Approved calculators: click here Approved dictionaries: click here Students should aim to arrive at the venue 20 minutes before the scheduled start time as there are a number of administrative tasks to do before the exam starts. Please be aware there is a seating arrangement. NOTE THAT STAGE 2 EXAMS CAN NOT BE RESCHEDULED. Most exams will be held in Champagnat Hall, but not ALL - so very important to check the exam timetable carefully. Stage 2 SACE Year 12 2017 Exam Timetable > YEAR 10 AND 11 EXAMS - END OF SEMESTER 2 Year 10 and 11 students have also been emailed their Semester 2 exam timetable and rules relating to exams. Year 10 and 11 Semester 2 2017 Exam timetable > Please note that Year 10 and 11 ENGLISH students will be doing their exam on their Chromebook/laptop device. It is essential that Year 10 and 11 English students bring their fully charged Chromebook/device to their English exam. It is not appropriate for families to book holidays during this important assessment period. In keeping with SACE Board policy, "matters of the student's own choosing (e.g. family holidays)" are not acceptable grounds for special provisions (such as rescheduling). The consequence for students missing exams due to holidays is therefore unfortunately zero. YEAR 12 WEEK 1 2018 – 27-30 November Year 11 students will have their first week of 2018 Year 12 lessons in the week following Year 11 exams.   • 2017 e-Learning News #5 Welcome to the fifth e-Learning news article for 2017. In this edition we look at the increasing popularity of the use of Chromebooks throughout Australia and how Sacred Heart College was “ahead of the curve” four years ago when we decided to go down the Chromebook pathway. During the past four years, Sacred Heart College has embarked upon a journey whereby students were initially given (at the Senior School), and then in subsequent years, asked to purchase a Chromebook to bring to school for use in the everyday classroom. In 2014, the Middle School independently arrived at the same decision and also introduced the Chromebooks school-wide. At the same time, we introduced all students and staff to the Google Suite of Educational Apps. This journey has been challenging, exciting and was, back then, ground breaking to the South Australian schooling environment. Now in 2017, the Chromebook is becoming the device of choice for more and more schools within the Australian educational landscape. I was excited to hear of an article in The Canberra Times newspaper on Monday 30 October. The headline read: “All Canberra secondary public school students to get Chromebook in 2018.” The article discusses that fact that many schools in the ACT were already using the Google Suite of Educational Apps and a move to the Chromebook was the next logical step. This initiative will be totally funded by the State Government and provide around 17,000 students with a Chromebook at the start of the 2018 school year. There were a number of sentences in the article which particularly stood out for me: “This initiative will ensure every secondary student in Canberra public schools has the same access to a device to enhance their learning through technology.” "Irrespective of family circumstances, every student will have an equal opportunity to access technology so they can learn wherever they are and use technology whenever they need it." "Chromebooks integrate seamlessly with these apps and will ensure all students are using a safe, secure and easily managed platform." Technology is forever changing and developing, and a Chromebook allows students to delve into this ever-changing technology world in an easy and simple way.   • 2018 CEA Nominations (Sport and Music) The CEA (Curriculum Extension Activities) program of the College provides students with the opportunity to participate in a broad range of activities inclusive of, but not limited to, Sports, Music Ensembles and Debating.   • Remar - Red Leadership Camp A formative experience fulfilling Marcellin’s vision for our young people. Remar focuses on the development of positive leadership, love of service and spiritual growth. In Year 10, the program culminates in a national Leadership Camp facilitated by Remar Australia at beautiful Phillip Island Adventure Resort in Victoria. At National Camps our Remar students are able to connect with like-minded and spirited students from Catholic schools near and far, and discover that they are part of a much bigger Marist community, aiming to fulfill Marcellin Champagnat’s vision. See below the comments from some of our rowers – the amazing ambassadors for our school: “My favourite part of the camp was joining together in small groups with other Remar students nationwide and sharing our thoughts about faith and our personal lives. It was fantastic to be able to listen to how others have experienced their journeys and learn from their experiences. I learned that leadership is something beyond just one person or caravel. Leadership is not simply being loud and proud, but about coming together to achieve a common goal, which is what we did as an entire Remar cohort on Red Leadership Camp. I was able to adapt and broaden my leadership and develop a Marist way of “doing good quietly.” I now have a better understanding of the term, 'Christian Leader.” ~ Michaela Howard Jones “This year's Red Leadership Camp for Remar was full of highlights and learning opportunities. Not only were the activities and events enjoyable and fun, but we also had an amazing opportunity to meet new people and build new and strong relationships with caravels from other schools. My favourite part was the music; we got to listen, sing, dance and we also had a chance to play if we wanted to (doing skits, performances, etc). I think we all learnt a whole lot about leadership and deepened our faith on the camp, and we will use what we learnt in our everyday lives. The only bad part about the camp was having to leave all of our new friends on the Sunday afternoon. We know we will be able to see them all again next year at the National Blue Retreat, which we are all definitely looking forward to.” ~ Isabel Kilsby “Some highlights for me were meeting new people and learning about different forms of prayer. All sessions were really cool; both entertaining and interesting and when the band, aptly named MYMistry (for Marist Youth Ministry), played everyone got involved and sang along. I felt like we were all one family. I learnt that when it comes to leadership, it doesn't matter whether you are ahead of the pack, somewhere in the middle, or leading from the back; just voicing your opinion and listening to others are important forms of leadership. I feel more accepting after this camp, and this has made me want to be a better role model and friend to my Caravel and wider College community.” ~ Angus Keogh “One of my favourite parts of the camp was the skits. Everyone did such an amazing job and the other groups performances were hilarious and well thought-out. We also had free time where everyone could show their talents through sport and music. We all had the best time! I absolutely loved the students I met from schools all over Australia, and although we live far away from each other, we will always be connected through Remar. I learnt through practical activities and reflection what it means to be a good Christian leader. I enjoyed being given opportunity to speak my mind and share what I truly feel about important issues.” ~ Ashley Pearce
