Welcome to our November newsletter. The last few weeks have been a busy blur of recognising and rewarding achievement, and reflecting on the year that was for our senior students before NCEA externals began. The Class of 2018 shared some special time in poignant contemplation, retrospectively considering their time Living the Mission at Manawa Tapu before taking the leap of faith into life beyond the college gates. A series of traditional college events have been held, ranging from Māori and Pasifika Graduation, Sports Prize Giving, Senior Prize Giving, Thanksgiving Mass and Graduation Dinner. Each event has been special in its own way, and allowed us to appropriately acknowledge and celebrate the contribution and legacy of our precious akonga. Thank you to those of you who were able to join us for some of these iconic Sacred Heart events.

Junior school has launched itself whole-heartedly into our four-week curriculum trial, in which teachers from different curriculum areas have combined their respective learning areas and written units of work relevant to the objectives of the NZ Curriculum. This collaborative teaching style places learning and engagement at the centre within authentic context and is somewhat removed from compartmentalised learning in single subjects. Careful consideration has been given to pastoral care occurring in Manaaki Time, and to minimum curriculum requirements in the areas of Literacy, Numeracy and Religious Studies. Early indication is that both teachers and students alike are immersed in the innovative and creative collaborations on offer. We will be formally gathering feedback on the trial so we can garner a wide range of voice around effectiveness. Expect a survey soon.

Both teaching unions, the NZEI and the PPTA are now negotiating their respective collective agreements. The rolling strike action of NZEI was well-documented through the media last week, and although we were able to remain open for instruction, we did so knowing that three of our staff took industrial action that may well pave the way for those PPTA members who are about to enter the fold with school affected by the PPTA Paid Union Meeting this Tuesday afternoon. We will keep you informed around any circumstances that might leave us being unable to remain open for instruction.

Thank you to our PTFA for their more than generous donation to our Korowai project, with monies coming from the earlier Dinner Dance and recent raffle, which was very well supported. Thank you for your support. Thank you to the Class of 2018 for their thoughtful leavers’ gift of a donation too. The preparation of the materials for the korowai is almost complete, and very soon our Manawa Tapu korowai will be woven by the master weavers. We await with anticipation and will keep you abreast of developments as the project comes to fruition.

Our Staff Retreat last Friday saw Manawa Tapu and Elizabeth House communities come together in a celebration of our shared Special Catholic Character. We began the day joining the parishioners at Our Lady Help of Christians with Father Simon taking us through the Mass in slow motion, explaining rituals and symbolism as the Mass proceeded. It was quite the experience, with everyone learning something new and left having had a rich experience. The remainder of the day was spent in service, actively Living the Mission. Teams of staff worked alongside one another in a number of community projects ranging from baking Christmas treats for those who might otherwise go without, knitting for premature babies, mucking in and tidying grounds and gardens for individuals and organisations who could do with some help and delivering a Digital Technology project to students in a primary school who otherwise wouldn’t have facility to do so. It was a humbling and uplifting experience, and a timely reminder that we are all called to mission and ministry, and that we can, and should, give of ourselves freely for the benefit of others…”Let us love, not with words but with deeds” (Pope Francis).

At our October Board Meeting, we farewelled our Board of Trustee Student Representative, Ollie Joe-West.

Stephen Hill, BOT Chairperson, presented flowers to Ollie and thanked her for her great contribution during her term as student representative. Ollie said it has been a great experience and thanked everyone for their support.

The new BOT Student Representative is Cornelia Chan.

Board of Trustees

Maree Sutton Katrina Bromell

We have recently farewelled dedicated Executive Officer, Maree Sutton, whose influence on the school site is everywhere, from earthquake strengthening the main block, to building and renovating the administration area and staffroom, and overseeing the network upgrade allowing for ultra-fast wireless broadband across the campus. Maree has a real heart for the school, being a Sacred Heart girl herself, and we will miss her tremendously. Katrina Bromell has quickly settled into the newly tilted role of Business Manager.

Mary Mustchin Ann Logan

It is with bittersweet equal measure of sadness and joy that I announce the retirement of two Sacred Heart institutions, Mary Mustchin and Ann Logan. Mary began working at Manawa Tapu 28 years ago, and Anne, 27. Both have worked in a number of capacities, most recently as teachers of Religious Studies alongside shared responsibility for Student Pathways. One can only imagine the number of young lives they have touched, with calm confidence reassuring and guiding, encouraging and cajoling, and a passion and love for those worked with reminiscent of the charism gifted to us by our founding order.

We wish Mary and Ann well as they look forward to experiencing and enjoying life in ‘the slow lane’, and in Ann’s case, on the other side of the island in Hawkes Bay.

Newsletter November 2018 The month of November has traditionally been dedicated to remembering those who have died. The feast of All Souls (November 2) is one of the most loving celebrations in the Church’s year. It is the day that we especially remember all those who have died, particularly our relatives and friends.

Eternal rest grant to them O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Parishes around the world will be observing Pope Francis’ 2nd World Day of the Poor on Sunday 18 November. The World day of the Poor is a new celebration on the Catholic calendar, created by Pope Francis at the end of the 2015-2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy. In his document concluding the Jubilee year, Misericordia et Misera, Pope Francis asked that Catholics celebrate this new celebration as a special day every year on the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, which this year falls on November 18. “It is my wish that … Christian communities will make every effort to create moments of encounter and friendship, solidarity and concrete assistance … if there are poor people where we live who seek protection and assistance, let us draw close to them.” (Pope Francis). The Pope also reminds us of the fundamental Catholic belief that Christ is found in every human person.

“Let us love, not with words but with deeds.” Pope Francis

Let us all remember these words as we approach the festive season.

Catholic Chapter

Be a Good News Statistic Tēnā koutou katoa.

November is Mass count month. It’s an annual statistical snapshot of participation at Sunday Mass. The statistics are not just about numbers; they are about us and our faith.

Last year our numbers were up. That was a good news story. A significant part of that trend is the wonderful co-operation between DRSs, Principals, Children’s Liturgy Leaders, and Priests. No one believes faith is unimportant. And in our hearts we know the best way to keep our faith growing and vibrant is coming along to Mass or Miha.

Mass makes not just Sunday special but the whole week, as it brings purpose to our lives. Especially to those of you who maybe have not been to Mass for a while, I encourage you to feel at home at Church. It’s our place.

See you Sundays!

Bishop Charles.

It was a day of remembrance at Parihaka for the Te Pāhuatanga atrocities that happened there 137 years ago. Some of our Year 10 Māori students were involved in the day from weaving kono, preparing the hākari (feast) as a way of remembering and commemorating the tūpuna and descents of Parihaka. Ka kore rawa e warewaretia - may we never forget.

Student reviews: Our Year 10 Māori class travelled to Parihaka to take place in Te Pāhuatanga o Parihaka commemoration, we spent the morning learning to weave kono and the correct way to cut harakeke, this was important to make sure that not too much harakeke is taken. It was really cool seeing the food from the hangi put into kono we had made. The hangi and other food prepared was delicious and it was great sharing kai with different people. By Nell Brown.

We went to Parihaka to commemorate their ancestors and how their land was taken away from them. I really enjoyed everything especially learning how to make kono with harakeke and learning that when the food was put into the ground they put it in whole because they had no cutlery because it was all taken away from them. I really had fun and hope we can go next year. By Aaliyah Kere-Rako.

Hannah Hitchcock’s short story ‘The Incline’ was published at the end of last year in Toitoi (a journal for young writers). In the last three years, Toitoi have published over 1000 young writers. Now they have created The Jillion – a collection of some of the most amazing writing from Toitoi. Hannah’s story is to be published in this book and it will be enjoyed by readers all over New Zealand and even the world. Isabella Moffit Y8 recently represented SHGC at the Toastmaster Speech Finals for Taranaki primary schools and was placed third. Earlier in the year Isabella had entertained all the Y7 & 8 classes and won the Intermediate speech final trophy with her humourous speech titled “The Tooth Fairy must die.”

Are you keen to join the movement helping to restore Taranaki’s native wildlife & bush by making Taranaki predator free by 2050? If so, get involved by trapping in your backyard, protecting Taranaki wildlife and native bush from the threat of predators. You can purchase a TRC/DOC rat trap for $10 from the SHGC school office. All proceeds will go towards purchasing native plants for our school. This venture is an extension of an on-going Restore Strandon project being initiated during the Enviro school collaboration where students will be monitoring and trapping pests and growing and planting native species.

The Tahi Rua Toru Tech challenge was something new to all of us, none of us took Digital Technologies or considered ourselves particularly knowledgeable when it comes to tech. This was good as it allowed us to push our boundaries in areas that we weren't as comfortable in. A term was spent designing our app, one that would allow dog walkers to find the perfect park for them and their dog in the New Plymouth region. We spent more time than we thought we’d need planning, and less time actually constructing the app. We made it to the Regionals. This meant driving down to Palmerston North for the day to present our app to a panel of judges. The twenty minutes that we had to present went very quickly! We were very impressed with the other groups’ ideas and it was a surprise when we were announced as winners. It has been a great experience and we can’t wait for the Wellington finals... Music

Musical Success! A HUGE congratulations to Frances Chow, a member of In Harmony, our senior choir. She has been selected to be a part of the 2019/2020 NZ Secondary Schools’ Choir. This is a huge achievement, with no-one from Taranaki in the choir since 2014. Auditions were held around the country in the October holidays, with 56 students selected nationwide – a good number being boys! The last student from SHGC in this prestigious choir was Lauren Nottingham, who has since gone on to become a very successful Jazz singer. Practices are held in each of the holidays during this period, with concerts and events held both in NZ and overseas. This is a well-deserved achievement for a hard-working, talented musician, who is also very willing to support those around her. As well as being a singer, Frances plays piano in the school Jazz Band, Bassoon in the school Concert Band, and Violin in the Taranaki Youth Orchestra. She recently earned Distinction in her Grade 8 Violin exam. Well done Frances and we look forward to following your progress over the next two years.

Last term in Social Studies in Year 9 and 10 classes we looked at the topic “Are we there yet?” – focusing on women’s equality to mark 125 years since women got the vote. We found a woman that interested and inspired us to interview and find out their story. We created a story board for each woman and presented this in an exhibition. Our exhibition also included a compliment box and plywood cutout characters. Our highlight was walking down the streets of New Plymouth in the suffrage hikoi to Puke Ariki landing. It was cool to find out the stories of women and think about how we have come a long way. By Holly Kleinsman, Isabella Danger and Macy Sinclair (9H)

The highlight would be seeing our two Sports Leaders Tiana Davison and Hannah O’Connor represent New Zealand at the Youth Olympics in Argentina during the October school holidays. It was an amazing experience for them both, culminating in Hannah running a personal best in the 3000m and finishing 7th in the world. Then Tiana helping her teammates bring home the Rugby Sevens Gold medal for NZ. Both girls have also donated one of their New Zealand shirts from 2018 to the school. These will be proudly displayed in the school and used as an inspiration for all our girls to aspire to.

Taranaki Intermediate Schools Cross Country Champs

After pulling together a team of committed Year 9/10 students, most of them first-time league players, the girls were looking forward to attending this TSSSA event in Opunake at the end of October. Due to a combination of other girls’ teams pulling out and inclement weather, our team was unable to compete, or arrange a one-off game. Better luck next year girls!

Junior Rugby League

At the end of Term 3, on a sunny but very windy day, six Sacred Heart girls braved the conditions at the Hawera A & P Showgrounds for the annual Taranaki Primary/Intermediate Schools Cross Country Day. Congratulations to all the girls for their excellent results at the end of a very busy sporting term, with many already competing at either Aims Games or the Whanganui Round the Lake Relay in the weeks beforehand. Final placings:

11yr old girls – Maddie Curd – 24th; Kate Larkin 29th; and Eva Martin 58th. 12yr old girls – Nicole Kowalewski – 15th; and Sarah Wells – 46th. 13yr old girls – Riley Grylls – 13th.

TSSSA Road Relays

On Monday October 29th SHGC was represented by 6 teams of 4 runners each in the annual Taranaki Road relays event around the streets of Pukekura Park. The three Year 7/8 teams finished, 5th, 6th, and 11th out of the total 23 teams entered in the girls’ race – a great effort as they jostled with running with the Year 7/8 boys also. The Year 9 team of Briar Dravitski, Emma Shotter, Keighley Simpson and Harriet Healion finished 2nd. Our senior team of Hannah O’Connor, Mia MacGregor, Anna Waayer and Tessa Honeyfield, retained the Senior Girls’ trophy for the school by finishing a very comfortable 1st place; while the SHGC White team finished a creditable 4th against strong runners from NPGHS. Well done everyone.

We have set up specific Facebook page for the PE/SPORTS Department called SHGC Manawa New Plymouth. Please add us as a friend so we can keep you in the loop on what’s happening in this area of the school.

Gymnastic National Championships

Taranaki Cricket

Congratulations to the following girls who have been named in Taranaki Cricket Representative teams for 2018/19.

U15 Representatives: (past pupil Taila Hurley is Coaching).

U18 Representatives:

Jessica Yates had an excellent tournament competing against 74 top gymnasts in the country and despite being sick, she won a silver medal on the floor on day one and then placed first on the floor on day two. She placed 6th overall in the all-round finals and the Taranaki team placed 3rd. They beat teams like Canterbury so it was pretty awesome. Jessica was also 5th in the country in Tumbling.

Due to finishing top in the region our Senior A Basketball team qualified for the NZSS Basketball tournament which occurred during the first week of the October holidays. Our team played well in pool play but came up against some stiff opposition in the play offs, ending up a credible 10th place in New Zealand. Big thanks to Coach Seb Cowie and Manager Linda Wichman, for working with these girls this season and giving up their holidays to go away with the team.

NZSS Basketball Tournament

Congratulations to Libby Francis in Year 8 who has been identified and selected to attend the 2019 U14 National Talent Camp for Basketball. Well done Libby.

Taranaki Intermediate Schools Tennis Champs

On Wednesday October 24th Nicole Kowalewski and Olivia Pennington represented Sacred Heart at the annual Intermediate Schools tennis champs. The girls played 3 games each against very strong opposition from other Year 7/8 girls, culminating in playing in both finals – Nicole (Open), and Olivia (Consolation). This achievement then qualified Nicole to represent the Taranaki schools at the Central Region Tennis Championships in Palmerston North.

The Central Region Tennis Championships were on in Palmerston North at the end of October and we had one student competing, Nicole Kowalewski. She had a great day, going down in her first game, then went onto play three games to win the Consolation Cup!

Congratulations Nicole.
