Today we have another challenging Gospel. Peter comes to Jesus and asks him how many times he needs to forgive another.

At times, we all react as Peter did. Do we ask Jesus this very same question when someone has hurt us? At some point in our lives, all of us have had painful experiences at the hands of another. Forgiving that person is not easy, especially when we have been hurt deeply! However, we always have the choice to change our minds and our hearts and ask Jesus to give us the grace to want to forgive that person. This is a critical first step. When we are willing to try to forgive another, it may not only free them, but most likely it also will free us.

Today, ask yourself: whom do I need to forgive? It may be another person or it may be that we need to forgive ourselves for actions or choices that we are not proud of. Spend a few minutes reflecting on this question. Naturally, it is most helpful to ask for forgiveness, however, there are situations when we don’t have the opportunity or the courage to do this in person. Hopefully, over time, we will forgive the person who wounded us and, in this process, we will free ourselves also of the heavy burden we have been carrying.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Sirach 27:30—28:9 Sirach advises all to forgive the faults of their neighbor. Only by forgiving the sins of others, can a person expect to be forgiven his sins. Second Reading: Romans 14:7-9 Paul stresses that no one is his own master; we are responsible to the Lord, and we belong to him in both life and death. Gospel: Matthew 18:21-35 This narrative points out the difference between mercy and justice. When Peter asks how often he should forgive someone who wrongs him, Jesus answers, “…not seven times: I say seventy times seven times.” Jesus then narrates the story of the king who was merciful to his official by forgiving him all his debts, but this same official showed no mercy to his own servant.
