Refugee Ministry A special thank you to those who so generously donated computers for the Komi family. Paul is so excited to begin using the computer to do his 7th grade schoolwork and to communicate with his school on a regular basis. The generosity of the Sacred Heart and Our Lady's parishioners cannot be beat! We are so fortunate to have the Komi family as members of this caring and welcoming community. Thank you for your kindness!

Have You Lost Someone You Love? Grief Support Workshop

Join us for a 6-week grief support workshop “Surviving Grief in the Holiday Season”. The death of a loved one is unlike any other. The holidays can be a particularly painful time when we are missing someone we love. Whether the death was sudden and tragic, or one with warning and preparation, the reality of death leaves most of us shocked, confused, and sad. These feelings may last for years. Grieving people need time and space to honor their grief. Your loss may be recent, or it may have been

From Fr. Dan, Administrator

Dear Friends,

We stand with our Jewish brothers and sisters in their anguish, and we condemn the atrocious shooting afflicted upon them in the synagogue in Pittsburgh. We further condemn all forms of anti-Semitism, and all prejudice. We pray for the victims, the wounded (including the police), and the family and friends of the victims.

Voting Day is this Tuesday. May the wisdom and love of God’s Holy Spirit guide our choices.

“Bishop Accountability” tops the agenda of the U.S. Catholic bishops meeting being held Tuesday, November 12 through Thursday, November 14. Much was achieved in the area of “Priest Accountability” by the U.S. bishops in 2002, but very little with regard to bishops. Let us pray that this 2018 meeting will achieve “Bishop Accountability,” both in terms of committing abuse and cover-ups of abusers. May the expertise of the Catholic laity play a huge role in the procedures envisioned. May the protection of minors and vulnerable adults be the number one priority!

Sharing Jesus: The most wonderful thing in my life is my personal relationship with Jesus, lived within

his family, the Church. I’m not going to let some abusive priests, or some bishops who covered up, steal away my relationship with Jesus and his family the Church. Nor will I let them take away my desire to share this with those I love.

Climate Change: “The Presidents of six continental Bishops’ Conferences have signed a document appealing to government leaders to take immediate action to tackle climate change, in an effort to avert catastrophic effects of the climate crisis. It’s not something which is far away: it is something that is now. Climate change is not about statistics, about degrees, it’s about people.” (Vatican News).

Sports: We are the Champions! Our beloved Red Sox won the World Series in five games! This is the fourth time in 15 years – that is spectacular! Alex Cora, Steve Pearce, David Price and so many more came through for the BoSox! Yippee! As I write this (Monday afternoon), I am confident the Pats will beat the Bills, and I think we will likely send Green Bay packing (get the pun?) tonight. Aaron Rodgers is good, but he is no Tom Brady! BC is ranked in the top 25. The Celts and Bruins are off to a decent start.

Love and God bless you! Fr. Dan

Thank You from Monsignor Dennis Sheehan

This is one of the rare moments when I find it hard to put my thoughts and feelings into words. So here goes! The celebration of my ordination anniversary and birthday you all organized, served, hosted and carried out was for me a singular expression of God's ever-moving grace. As I observed, most priests I know are not comfortable being the center of attention. Our customary role is to lead a celebration for someone else...baptism, wedding anniversary. Our greatest privilege is to lead the celebration weekly and daily of the Lord's Eucharist with all of our communities. While the celebration was at least partly about me, my 80th birthday and 55th year as a priest, it was also about you and the great part these parishes have played in my years.

As a child, I had family in Newton Centre and often went to "the Bishop's Mass" on Sundays at Sacred Heart. I first came to Our Lady's as a resident while serving an office assignment in 1990. So these communities are really for me at this stage my home and family. You certainly brought that home with your enthusiasm, generous sharing and prayerful good wishes a few weeks ago.

Thanks for all the decorating, cooking, arranging, rehearsing and preparation. I will be singing my grateful praises of you before the Lord for all the years that remain to me.

On to the next 80 or 55! Don't place limits on the providence of God!

With love and gratitude to you all now and always,

~ Msgr. Dennis Sheehan

The Mass for Millennials: Prayers after Communion “Stick-to-itiveness is one of the more inelegant words in the English language, but I have a special fondness for it …I have also found that it is one of the marks of Christian discipleship and have learned to admire those who exemplify it.” (Eugene H. Peterson, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society)

There are at least three streams of cultural influence work-ing against Christians who desire stick-to-itiveness—who want their faith to have true staying power.

The first stream is the cultural influence of the status quo, which insists that a life of faith is mostly confined to young students and parents of children. If you have spent any time leading or participating in youth ministry in the past few decades, you know the statistics. After high school, church attendance drops significantly. And it tends to stay there for a while, at least until you get married and have kids and want to raise them “properly.”

The second stream is our general hurried pace, and our celebration of this hurried pace. Our days are packed. We move from one activity to the next with little to no time for reflection. I recently taught a group of High School students the practice of Lectio Divina. We quickly discov-ered that the most difficult aspect of this practice for mod-ern Christians is the period of silence after we have read, meditated, and prayed. Like everything else we do, there is a tendency to get in, hear from God in prayer and through Scripture, and then get out and move on with our lives. We have to fight everything within us to choose to sit, in silence, to allow the words to sink in.

The third stream of cultural influence that is detrimental to our development of a spiritual stick-to-itiveness is our love for noise. Like many of our loves, this one is—for many of us—actually a love-hate relationship. We wake up and reach for our phones in order to catch up on what we might have missed while we were sleeping. We are standing in line and instinctively reach into our pockets to check the time on our phones, and are met with notifica-tions demanding our attention. Minutes later, we put our

phone back into our pockets, only then realizing that we still do not know the time. We recognize how life-draining these habits are, but we cannot find a way to avoid them.

So what are those of us who recognize these streams within our own lives to do to combat them? What about for those within the church who are living in the no-man’s-land of young adulthood who—if you believe the statistics—are a dwindling crowd?

Those of us who desire a faith that lasts despite the challenges addressed above have a liturgical ally in our fight against these three streams: the Prayers after Communion and—by extension—the time we spend waiting for the Prayers after Communion.

Let’s be honest: everyone has somewhere to be. The aver-age parishioner has had a busy weekend, and has a loom-ing week ahead of them. Their favorite team has already begun to play, or the rest of their friends are already at lunch waiting for them. It is very convenient to slip out the door after receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus; it may also be working against the very aspect of our faith that needs the most attention at this point in our lives.

Forcing ourselves to kneel and pray while we wait for others to finish receiving Communion goes against each of the streams mentioned above. Rather than being an inconvenience, we can view this time as a gift from God to pause and be still in the presence of Jesus. There is nothing to accomplish in this time. No demands to be met. We simply wait, and pray.

At the end of our time of waiting, the Priest prays one of several Prayers after Communion that themselves also help combat the three streams. As an Anglican Christian living in the English-speaking world, I cannot help but close with one of the Post-communion Prayers found in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer.

Against the status-quo of dwindling church membership among millennials, we are asked to pray: “Thank you for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living

members of the Body of your Son.”

Against the tendency to rush out the door and move on to other activities, we are reminded that we are actually be-ing sent out of our Parish by God: “to do the work you

have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful wit-nesses of Christ our Lord.”

Against our dependency on being fed by the noise of daily life we thank God “for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ.”

While it was originally written for an audience of college and graduate students, the beauty of the Mass is something that we can all consider and savor. We hope that you enjoy these reflections, consider prayerfully how you are called to engage or reengage in the Mass, and share these words with your loved ones. Timothy P. Beyond Our Walls Care for Creation

This October, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reported that we have only 12 years left to act to keep global warming to a maximum of 1.5° Celsius, beyond which even just a half degree of warming will significantly worsen the risks of extreme heat, drought, floods, and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.

Election day is this Tuesday, November 6. Inform yourself about the candidates’ positions on the environment and measures to reverse or lessen climate change. And please be sure to vote!

Workcamp Thank You Thank you to all who made donations last week to the Workcamp Service Trip. We raised around $2600 and are so grateful for your generosity. There are flyers at the doors of the church if you’d like to make a donation in the future. Please keep all of us in your prayers as we begin preparing for the trip next summer! Got a question about Workcamp? Contact Kristina Preman at [email protected] or 617-527-7560 ext.216

Celebrating 100 Years of Marriage!

Two parishioner couples, Dave & Margaret Roylance and Jim & Barbara Allaire, are both celebrating their 50th wed-ding anniversaries next Sunday, November 11, at the 10:00am Mass. They were married mere weeks apart in 1968. You are invited to join them at the Mass next Sunday and at a reception afterwards in the Lower Hall.

Religious Ed for Older Children Do you have an older child who was never baptized or nev-er received their First Holy Communion? Do you have a child with special needs who would like to join our faith formation/religious education program? It’s never too late, and your situation is not as unusual as you may think! We help children of all ages, at all levels, in ways that are com-fortable for them. Contact Rosemary for more info (617-527-7560 ext.213, [email protected]).

Book of Remembrance Traditionally, we pray throughout November for the Faith-ful Departed. The Book of the Faithful Departed will be available on a table in the gathering space at the back of the Church so that we can inscribe the names of our loved ones who have died. They will be remembered in prayer at Masses throughout the month of November. Also, the Book of Intentions will continue to be available on the po-dium in the gathering space. This Book enables others to join us in praying for people in need and for situations about which we are concerned.

Volunteers Needed at Mass Would you like to become more involved in the Our La-dy’s community? Consider serving as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, or Greeter at Mass. We are in need of volunteers at all Masses. We are happy to have you serve according to your availability, whether that is every week or once a month. For more information, please contact Maribeth Scott at 617-469-8110 or [email protected].

Honduras Coffee This Weekend We will be selling coffee from our sister parish in Hondu-ras this weekend after all Masses. Thanks for supporting the coffee farmers, our friends in San Marcos.

Lost and Found If you’ve misplaced an item, remember to check our Lost and Found bin, located in the work sacristy of the church. We have a collection of hats, gloves, umbrellas, reading glasses, prayer books, and so on. Items are donated after several months in the bin, so take a look!

Grand Annual Collection By now, you should have received a letter from Fr. John and Fr. Dan requesting your participation in our 2018-2019 Grand Annual Collection. This collection supplements our weekly offertory and lease revenue and is crucial to help us meet our financial obligations.

As of October 31 we have raised $70,762 from 167 parishioners. Thank you!

Our goal is $200,000, and we need everyone to take part in order to attain that goal. Whether you give $100 or $300; $1,000 or $5,000, your gift will be appreciated as it promotes the wellbeing of Our Lady’s.

Blue donation envelopes are available at the doors of the church. Thank you for your generous support!

Help a Neighbor in Need This Holiday Season With the holidays approaching, Our Lady’s is in need of about 100 volunteers to provide meals for Thanksgiving for local families in need by purchasing groceries - you DO NOT cook the meal!

If you are willing to assist in this endeavor, please contact Rosemary at 617-527-7560 ext.213 or [email protected]. She will take your contact information (name, phone and email) and send you all the details in writing. She will also ask you to specify the approximate family size you are willing to provide for.

Parishioners are asked to purchase a turkey and all the trimmings and to drop them off at the Our Lady’s Parish Office on Tuesday, November 20, between 3:00pm and 5:00pm. This outreach is being provided by the parish, in conjunction with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.

Thank you for your willingness to share your resources with those in need!
