RESPECT LIFE CORNER
Here I am…my lungs are almost completely ready to breathe on the outside. I am practicing how to do that with the fluid I live in. And I am putting on even more of that ‘baby fat’ !I can easi-ly grab onto things now…ready for the ride. My mom has her bag packed….camera and all.
“They will see the glory of The Lord, the splendor of Our God.” Romans 15:7
YOU MAY BE THE PERSON GOD IS CALLING!! We are in great need of some young faces for the Respect Life Commit-tee….please take this need to prayer and see if God is asking you to Him by working to save the least among us. This takes very little time….some things can be done completely from home. For more information or questions, please contact Barbara Kemple at 585-2132 or [email protected]
The Dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and the Apparition of “Our Lady of Lourdes” In February of 1858, Our Lady appeared to a 14-year old peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous, at a grotto or
cave outside of the village of Lourdes, France, where she and her sister and a friend had gone to gather
firewood. The other two had crossed the stream to search for firewood in the
forest, but Bernadette had stayed behind. Suddenly, she saw in the grotto the
image of a lady in white, holding a rosary. Bernadette pulled her rosary from her
pocket and began to pray. When she returned home she told her mother of the
“lady in white” who spoke to her, and prayed the “Our Father” with her. Similar
apparitions of the "Lady" were reported on seventeen occasions that year, until
the climax revelation of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception took place. Her
parish priest, unconvinced that Bernadette was actually having visions of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, instructed her to ask the “lady” what her name was. When
Bernadette, at the next apparition, asked the lady in white, “What is your name?”,
the lady lifted her eyes to heaven and declared, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” These words were
strange to Bernadette, who repeated them over and over to herself on the way back to the village. But they
were not strange at all to the parish priest when he heard this uneducated peasant girl repeat words with deep
theological meaning – affirming the dogma which had been pronounced less than four years earlier.

How would you feel, or better yet, what would you do, if the one true Faith born when Christ rose from the dead was dying? Although not in imminent danger—there are more than 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide—there are wide-spread characteristics among the “faithful” that contribute greatly to its challenging times. So what are these widespread characteristics getting in the way of Catholics doing their job to keep the faith alive? Some of the most glaring include: 1. A lack of wisdom related to the Faith, a blatant disregard for the sacraments 2. Preoccupation with worldly gain rather than spiritual growth; lack of hunger for God’s Word. 3. Individualism to the point of neglecting others More than ever the Church—which is its people—needs to revive its most important role of inspiring a greater love for Jesus Christ and each other. Unfortunately, according to Dynamic Catholic Institute, only 7 percent of the Catholic popu-lation can be considered actively engaged. That means the vast majority of Catholics are not attending Mass on a regular basis, let alone daily; they have forgotten about or rarely if ever take time to learn the true meaning of the sacraments; secular life has become more important than spiritual growth; and many are not contributing to the critical needs of others, some in their own backyard. Here are some ways to deepen your spiritual journey in this liturgical “new year”, as well as help spread the faith: 1. Pray “without ceasing” as it is written in the Gospel, every day by yourself or with others. I encourage the youth to “give God the FIRST FIVE.” Set your alarm five minutes early, and spend the first five minutes of your day offering yourself to God. 2. Go to confession, no matter how long it has been. And then go EVERY MONTH! 3. Receive the Eucharist regularly to nourish your soul. After receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, RETURN TO YOUR PEW, kneel, and pray a prayer of thanksgiving the this great gift, and ask Him to strengthen you for the week ahead. 4. Volunteer to become a reader at mass or an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion. Or a co-catechist for the youth preparing for Confirmation. 5. Spend time in front of Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. 6. Motivate/encourage your children to become altar servers. (If they’re bored in Mass, get them to be engaged with the liturgy!) Since only about 24 percent of Catholics attend Mass on any given Sunday, it’s probably safe to assume they do not understand the gravity of not doing so or worse—they don’t really care. Add to that the fact that not every Catholic believes in the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, and it’s plain to see that some understand-ing of the faith is less than elementary at best. How can this be? It’s past the time to really commit to the faith, accept the grace God has made available to each one of us, and ex-perience the fullness and rewards of Catholicism. It’s time to overcome bitterness, anger and disillusion-ment, time to reconnect with the Church on a deeper level, and as a ]result receive the abundant blessings bestowed on faithful, practicing Catholics. (A great way to do that would be the LUKE study… join us!) [Adapted from an article by Claire Wallace, Aleteia, Mar. 9, 2015]
