As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carriedabout by every wind of doctrine, by thetrickery of men, by craftiness in deceitfulscheming: but speaking the truth in love, weare to grow up in all aspects into Himwho is the head, even Christ, from whomthe whole body, being fitted and heldtogether by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of eachindividual part, causes the growth of thebody for the building up of itself in love.

Triad FanfareJohn Vander Gheynst

Mr. Vander Gheynst writes:“The name Triad Fanfare is derived from the musicalterm for a combination of three notes, but the termitself can also mean a whole entity that is equallydivided into three parts, akin the Holy Trinity. Thepiece makes frequent use of many numerologicalcombinations of three, such as three main sections, three key centers (that modulate by a third each,)and thematic material based on three note combina-tions. The actual main basic three note combination, when added together, adds up to a ninth, three withinthree.”

Traid Fanfare is Mr. Vander Gheynst second commis-sion by the Sacred Winds Ensemble and is theeleventh piece to be added to the Sacred WindsEnsemble Commissioning Project, est. 2000.

A Childhood HymnDavid Holsinger

A Childhood Hymn is based on the hymn “Jesus LovesMe” (music by William Bradbury). Anna BartlettWarner wrote this text in 1860 in collaboration withher sister Susan as a part of one of the best-sellingnovels of that day, Say and Seal. The poem is spokenby one of the characters, Mr. Linden, as he comfortsJohnny Fax, a dying child.

Bradbury composed the music for “Jesus Loves Me” in1861 specifically for Anna Warner’s text and person-ally added the chorus to the four stanzas. It appearedin its present form in 1862 in his hymnal publication,The Golden Shower.

David Holsinger was born in Hardin, Missouri. Heearned a Bachelor of Music degree from CentralMethodist College and a Master of Music degreefrom Central Missouri State University, with post-graduate work at the University of Kansas. He iscurrently the conductor of the Lee University WindEnsemble in Cleveland, Tennessee.

Mr. Milner writes:“Come to Jesus or Untitled Hymn is a hymn tunewritten and performed by Chris Rice. The words toUntitled Hymn depict a journey through birth, the joys, the pains, and the glorious afterlife with Jesus Christ.Untitled Hymn is a plea for all to come unto His care, protection and love. We are all on a journey but weare not alone in that journey.

The introduction in the violin lays the foundationalmelody for the rest of the work. The form of theoverall piece is a modified rondo with each verse as acharacter variation. A rondo is where the melody ispresented (the A section of a piece) and subsequentmelodies are intermingled between each A section.Typically a rondo is ABACAB, etc.; however, this pieceis modified somewhat, so the form of this piece is:

Introduction – A section – Transition – A sectionrestated (sung) – B Section – C Section – B Section –A section – B Section – A section (minor) – Csection – Transition – A section (dance section) – A’

Section (repeated) – Transition – A’ Section – A’’’

Section – B section – Transition – A’’’’ Section – Coda

The character variations come solely from theinstrumental timbre and the use of harmony. Thewords dictate what the instruments portray. The Band C section themes are all derivatives of theoriginal melody.”

Lyrics: sponse in the voice of the Earth is the answeringshout of Thanksgiving, and the shout of praise.

Out of this, the hymn tune ‘Old Hundred,’ severalother hymn tunes (the Bach chorales, ‘Only Trust inGod to Guide You’ and ‘Christ Who Makes Us Holy’),and original melodies which are hymn-like in nature, form the backbone of Symphony No. 4.

I have used Christian symbols because they are mycultural heritage, but I have tried to move throughthem to a depth of universal humanness, to anawareness that is not defined by religious label. Myimpulse through this music is to speak to the funda-mental human issues of transformation and re-birth inthis chaotic time.”

David Maslanka was born in New Bedford, Massachu-setts in 1943. He attended the Oberlin CollegeConservatory where he studied composition withJoseph Wood. He spent a year at the Mozarteum inSalzburg, Austria, and did graduate work in composi-tion at Michigan State University with H. Owen Reed.

About the Doxology (Old One Hundredth)

The four lines of the Doxology have been the mostfrequently sung words of any known song for morethan three hundred years. Even today nearly everyEnglish-speaking Protestant congregation still unites atleast once each Sunday in this noble ascription ofpraise. It has been said that the doxology has donemore to teach the doctrine of the Trinity than all thetheological books ever written. It has often beencalled “the Protestant Te Deum Laudamus.”

The author of this text was a bold, outspokenseventeenth century Anglican Bishop named ThomasKen. He was born at Little Berkhampstead, England, in1637. Left an orphan in early childhood, Ken waseducated at Winchester School where he was raisedunder the care of his older sister and her famoushusband, Izaak Walton, distinguished in history as themost eminent angler of his time. Later Ken attendedOxford University and was ordained in 1662 to theministry of the Church of England. His illustrious

Symphony No. 4David Maslanka

The composer writes the following:“The roots of Symphony No. 4 are many. The centraldriving force is the spontaneous rise of the impulse toshout for the joy of life. I feel it is the powerful voiceof the Earth that comes to me from my adoptedwestern Montana, and the high plains and mountainsof Central Idaho. My personal experience of the voiceis one of being helpless and torn open by the powerof the thing that wants to be expressed — thewelling-up shout that cannot be denied. I am setaquiver and am forced to shout and sing. The re-

career in the ministry was stormy and colorful.Following ordination, he served as chaplain to theBishop of Winchester. In 1679 he was sent to Holland, where he was the English chaplain at the royal courtat the Hague. Ken, however, was so outspoken indenouncing the corrupt lives of those in authority inthe Dutch capital that he was compelled to leave thefollowing year. Upon his return to England Charles IIappointed Ken as one of his own chaplains. Kencontinued to reveal the same spirit of boldness inrebuking the moral sins of his dissolute Englishmonarch. Despite these rebukes Charles alwaysadmired the courageous chaplain. He referred to himas “the good little man” and, when it was chapel time,he would usually say, “I must go in and hear Ken tellme my faults.” Eventually, the King rewarded ThomasKen by appointing him to the Bishopric of the Bathand Wells area. Just twelve days after Ken wasconsecrated as a Bishop, his friend Charles II died.Soon Ken incurred the wrath of the new monarch, papist James II, by refusing to read the Royal Declara-tion of Indulgence, and with six other AnglicanChurch leaders he was imprisoned in the Tower ofLondon. Although Ken was eventually acquitted, hewas later removed from his bishopric in 1691 by thenext ruler, William III. The remaining years of Ken’s lifewere spent in quiet obscurity with a devoted friend,Lord Weymouth, at his home in Longleat, Wiltshire, where Ken died in 1711 at the age of seventy-four.The historian Macaulay gave a tribute to Bishop Kenwhen he stated that he came as near to the ideal ofChristian perfection “as human weakness permits.”

Bishop Ken wrote a number of hymns, and it wasalways his desire that Christians be allowed toexpress their praise to God without being limitedonly to Psalmody and the Bible canticles. He was oneof the first English writers to produce hymns thatwere not merely versifications of the Psalms.

In 1673 Thomas Ken wrote a book entitled A Manualof Prayers for the Use of the Scholars of WinchesterCollege. In one of the editions of this manual, Kenincluded three of his hymns that he wanted thestudents to sing each day as part of their devotions. These hymns were called “Morning Hymn,” “EveningHymn,” and “Midnight Hymn.” Each of these hymns

closed with the familiar four lines we now know asthe Doxology. The text of his “Morning Hymn”became especially popular. Two of the verses fromthis hymn are as follows:

Awake, my soul, and with the sunThy daily course of duty run,Shake off dull sloth, and early rise,To pay thy morning sacrifice.Direct, control, suggest, this day,All I design, or do, or say; That all my powers, with all their might,In Thy sole glory may unite.

It is said that after Bishop Ken had written this hymn,he sang it to his own accompaniment on the luteevery morning as part of his private devotions.

The tune for Bishop Ken’s text, “Old Hundredth,” issaid to be the most famous of all Christian hymntunes. It was composed or adapted by Louis Bour-geois, born in Paris, France, c. 1510. In 1541 Bourgeoismoved to Geneva, Switzerland, where he became anardent follower of John Calvin and the ReformedReformation Movement. Here he was given theresponsibility to provide the tunes for the newmetrical psalms which were being prepared at thattime. Bourgeois was largely responsible for theGenevan Psalter, a monumental musical publication, completed and published in 1562. The tune wasprepared originally for the French version of Psalm134 and was included in the Anglo-Genevan Psalterof 1551. The first English words to which it waswedded were William Kethe’s version of Psalm 100,“All People That on Earth Do Dwell”; accordingly, thetune became known as “The Hundredth.” In 1696,when Tate and Brady published their New Version, theword “Old” was used to show that the tune was theone in use in the previous Psalter, edited by Sternholdand Hopkins. (Quoted from 101 Hymn Stories by Kenneth Osbeck. KregelPublishers, Grand Rapids, MI, 1982.)

Founded in 1997, the Sacred Winds Ensemble is a group ofvolunteer musicians dedicated to glorifying the Lord, JesusChrist, through his gift of music. The ensemble consists ofapproximately sixty-five musicians representing ten statesand twenty educational institutions throughout the nation. The performers - selected by invitation only - include publicschool and private music educators, as well as undergradu-ate and graduate students of music.

The initial purpose of the ensemble was to bring anothermusical outlet to the worship service of Petrey MemorialBaptist, the conductor’s home church. Asking twenty-oneof his closest friends from Morehead State University to bea part of the group, the musicians traveled to Hazard for athree-hour rehearsal on Saturday July 19, 1997. Thefollowing morning, the ensemble led the church in worship.Upon returning to MSU the following fall, the conductorwas approached by many more colleagues, asking if theytoo could participate in the ensemble. One year later, theensemble (now doubled in size) performed at First BaptistChurch of Hazard. Since that initial worship service atPetrey Memorial Baptist Church, the program has unfoldedinto a ministering opportunity and a way to spread theword of our graceful God.

In 2000, the ensemble established the Sacred WindsEnsemble Commissioning Project. In the past four years, the group has commissioned and premiered ten works. The ensemble extended the Project to the visual arts in2003, commissioning Hazard native Caraline Roll toproduce scenes from John 4.

Presenting the Gospel of Christ as Savior and Lord as thefocus of their programming, the Sacred Winds Ensemble isheralded for their innovative, thought-provoking program-ming and emotionally moving performances.

Sacred WindsEnsembleOurOurOurOurOurLogoLogoLogoLogoLogoIt has beenmy privilegeto designthe logo for the Sacred Winds Ensemble. The design grewfrom the incorporation of the downbeat and movement ofthe baton as a conductor leads musicians. It was my desirethat life and energy be communicated in the logo. It wasalso my desire that it convey the essence of the life of JesusChrist that flows in those who know Him as Savior andLord. JC moves from left to right in the design.

The God who made the world and all things in it, since He isLord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples madewith hands; nor is He served by human hands, as though Heneeded anything, since He Himself gives to all people life andbreath and all things; and He made from one man everynation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, havingdetermined their appointed times and the boundaries of theirhabitation, that they would seek God, if perhaps they mightgrope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from eachone of us; fffffor in Him we live and moor in Him we live and moor in Him we live and moor in Him we live and moor in Him we live and move and eve and eve and eve and eve and exist, xist, xist, xist, xist, as evensome of your own poets have said, ‘For we also are Hischildren.’ —ACTS 17:24-28

It is the final portion of this passage that came to my heartas I designed the logo. For without Him we are nothing.Without His infusing life, anything we do is empty andmeaningless. It is His life that must play through us topraise Him before His body, and carry His life to the lost.

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from who every family in heaven and on earthderives its name, that he would grant you, accordingto the riches of His glory, to be strengthened withpower through His Spirit in the inner man, so thatChrist may dwell in your hearts through faith; andthat you, being rooted and grounded in love, may beable to comprehend with all the saints what is thebreadth and length and height and depth, and toknow the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.Now to Him who is able to do far moreabundantly beyond all that we ask or think, accordingto the power that works within us, to Him be theglory in the church and in Christ Jesus to allgenerations forever and ever, Amen.

EPHESIANS 3:14-21
