SACXS FACTS Newsletter for the San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society Adios to the 2017 SACXS Show & Sale It was an Over-the Top Event! I always feel a little sad when the Show & Sale ends for the year, but I am exhilarated that everything went so well. Our attendance was through-the–roof with large crowds of happy succulent-lovers illing the Garden Center every day. We had record-breaking rafle ticket sales, silent auction sales, and live auction sales on all 3 days. Of course, we had great-looking rafle plants due to members who potted up cuttings at our Pot-A-Thon and then took care of the little plants until Showtime. We had many unique and desirable donations made to the Silent Auction and Live Auction by current members, past members, local nurseries, and other related businesses. My co-chairman and I were able to obtain unbelievable succulents and other items for our live auction that had the bidders going crazy. One special item, a desert collage, made by member Sage Gibson, was a high-dollar item in our Live Auction. We had a total of 13 Educational Displays. Members made displays on topics such as Growing Succulents from Seed and How to Salvage Succulent Plants after Rot or Hail Damage. Succulent Groups were high-lighted including Hoyas, Dyckias, and Horse Cripplers. There was even a display about the Cochineal Bug! We added some new activities to this year’s Show & Sale. Marty presented a Soil Demonstration on Friday and Saturday to help get people on the right track when replanting their purchases. We also set up a Kid Zone with succulent coloring sheets, a cactus craft activity, and a scavenger hunt. 25 children completed the scavenger hunt to earn a free rafle plant. To help our visitors be more comfortable on those hot days, bottles of water were offered for a donation. There were 10 vendors with an amazing variety of xerophytes, succulents, and cactus. It’s safe to say that if someone was looking for a particular plant, they were track down in the Garden Center.

Adios to the 2017 SACXS Show & Sale It was an Over-the Top Event!

Of course the Show & Sale would never have happened without the help and support of many people. Please read this list of members who volunteered to provide assistance during the Show & Sale. Notice that many of these members volunteered in more than one way.

A great big THANK YOU to Linda Draper who assisted me as Co-Show Chairman. She wrote the newsletter articles, got us an interview on Kens 5 TV, solicited items for the silent auction, went with me on our buying trips for the live auction plants, typed up our Show & Sale document, mailed out invites to last year’s attendees, donated plants to the Rafle and Silent Auction, prepared an Educational Display, came up with great suggestions, and provided great advice among too many other details to mention.

Thanks to Mandy Bulmer who stepped in as Club Table Chair. She organized the volunteer list for the club table and made sure it ran smoothly for the entire 3 days. We can thank our great rafle ticket sales to her and the other club table volunteers. Mandy also prepared an Educational Display and donated plants to the Rafle & Silent Auction. She even stayed and helped with clean-up.

Thanks to Don Clark who has served as Treasurer for many years. He makes sure that our inances are in order from the beginning to the end of the Show & Sale. I honestly don’t think I could keep all of our debits and proits in order without him. Don also helped with the clean-up.

Thanks to Lisa Kibler who has served as Refreshment Chair for many years. We can thank her for the wonderful lunches that are served to all vendors and volunteers every day during the Show & Sale.

It was crazy down at the Garden Center, and unless I have a volunteer form or list from one of the Sub-Chairman, I may have inadvertently left you out of my list of “Thank-You’s”. Please contact me if I did, so I can properly thank you for your assistance. I know I don’t have everyone’s name who helped with advertising so a “Thank You” to anyone who passed out or posted lyers, posted a SACXS yard sign, used social media such as Facebook or Nextdoor to get the word out, or spread the information by word-of-mouth. To all members who volunteered: YOU ARE THE GREATEST!!!!!

If you were super busy like I was during the Show & Sale, you can check out Guide-by-Cell for information about the Educational Displays, the Vendors, and the Fiesta Medals. I hope to add a new page soon with photos from past events including the Show & Sale. Just text “sacxs” to 56512 and click on the link to go to the SACXS mobile webpage. It will be active all year long.

Until next year, Barbara Schulze, 2017 Co-Show & Sale Chairman
