It gives me great pleasure to extend a warm and sincere welcome to friends, partners, patrons, stakeholders and collaborators of the National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH) to the latest edition of our quarterly Newsletter Sadbhavana Sandesh.

I would like to profoundly and earnestly thank and express my deep gratitude for the cooperation and support that has been extended so generously and unstintingly to us at the Foundation over the last more than two years during which I have had the privilege of overseeing the affairs of this significant Institution.

I am happy to get this opportunity to share some thoughts on programmes and activities that have been conducted by the Foundation over the preceding two months as also on the activities that we propose to undertake in the near future. I also seek and invite your counsel, feedback and guidance on the same.

I would also like to convey our sincere appreciation for the large number of messages of support and felicitation that we continue to receive on publication of Sadbhavana Sandesh. While several people including from the highest echelons of the Government have written to us as also called us to verbally commend the Foundation for the vital and critical work it is doing, several others have offered their total cooperation and unstinted support in promoting our activities. We feel deeply humbled and gratified by these responses. They motivate and inspire us to carry forward our initiatives and projects with even greater zeal and enthusiasm.

For the last two months, since the last issue of Sadbhavana Sandesh was published, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh and several other leaders have spoken about the critical importance of maintaining peace and communal harmony amongst different religions and segments of society in the country.

Speaking on June 1, 2015 to News Agency United News of India about the significant achievements of his Government over the last one year, Prime Minister Modi said:

“Our Constitution guarantees religious freedom to every citizen and that is not negotiable. I have said this before and I say it again: any discrimination or violence against any community will not be tolerated. My position on this is very clear: Sab ka saath, sab ka vikas. We stand for every one of the 1.25 billion Indians regardless of caste or creed and we will work for the progress of every one of them. Every faith in our country has equal rights; it is equal not only before the law but also before society. My government’s focus has been on governance and development. Our focal point is clear: Vikas, Vikas, Vikas; jobs, jobs, jobs.’’

This clear and unequivocal articulation by the Government is proof of its determination and resolve to ensure peaceful co-existence, social harmony, development and growth amongst all segments of our diverse society.

In the ensuing pages you will get a brief glimpse of a few programmes that the Foundation has conducted in recent months. I am happy to note that an increasing number of Academic staff Colleges or (Human Resource Development Centres, as they have been re-christened since April 1, 2015) have been including the theme of communal harmony and national integration in their Programmes. In fact Kumaon Unuiversity in Nainital organized a special 7 day Short Term Course on ‘’National Integration’’ in June, 2015 which was attended by participants not only from the neighbouring States but also from as far away as Assam, Maharashtra, Gujarat and others. Speaking to participants in this Programme as well as to those at DAVV, Indore, I emphasised the vital importance of ensuring that women get their rightful place of respect and dignity in the Society. Only then will our country be able to realise its promise and potential of

a safe, secure, peaceful and prosperous nation. In addition it is incumbent upon us, the people from the mainland of the country, to welcome and invite our sisters and brethren from the North-Eastern States of our country so that people from these States consider themselves to be active stake-holders and participants in the forward march, progress and development of the country.

I would like to respectfully and profusely compliment and applaud Sri M, the eminent philosopher and erudite spiritual guide, and his ardent and devoted group of padayatris for their relentless March “Walk of Hope” from Kanyakumari to Srinagar. The Walk which was flagged off from Kanyakumari on 12th January, 2015, the birthday of Swami Vivekananda, has already travelled for more than 150 days and covered a distance of more than 2,000 kms. At every place on its journey Sri M and the yatris have received enthusiastic response. The Foundation feels honoured and privileged to be actively associated with this commendable venture which will contribute significantly to creation of a peaceful, happy and prosperous society.

On a somewhat macro level, I am pleased to inform our readers that over the last 2 years, the Foundation has taken several new steps and initiatives through which it has significantly enhanced its effectiveness and outreach. In the process, the Foundation has actively endeavoured to contribute to promoting social harmony, mutual respect amongst all religions, peace, non-violence and security in society.

I am convinced that the growing and expanding activities of the Foundation will have a considerable positive impact on growth, development and prosperity in our country in the near and medium term.

Some of the notable initiatives taken by the Foundation in recent years include :

i) Partnership with Human Resource Development Centres (HRDCs) / Academic Staff Colleges (ASCs): The University Grants Commission (UGC) has established 66 (HRDCs) / ASCs in different premier Universities of the country. Through the UGC, the Foundation has established a partnership with these colleges to encourage and promote teaching of communal harmony and focus on the ancient Indian civilizational ethos of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The whole world is a family) and 'Ekam sat, vipraha bahudha vadanti' (There is one truth, wise people call it by different names), amity and brotherhood in various universities and colleges. Over recent months, I have had the pleasure and privilege of being invited to Address participants of Orientation/ Refresher Programmes by University of Mysore; Aligarh Muslim University; Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad; Universities of Mizoram, Kurukkshetra, Kumaon; DAVV, Indore and several others. I have been invited to speak at many of these Institutions more than once.

ii) Collaboration with All India Women's Conference (AIWC): Girls and women have been identified by the Foundation for special attention and focus to promote ideals of communal harmony, compassion, kindness and generosity in social relations. This has been done not only because women are the most vulnerable in incidents of communal and ethnic violence and disturbance, but more importantly, because of the vital role they play as mothers, teachers, sisters to promote peace and harmony in society. The Foundation in collaboration with AIWC, a reputed and respected organization established in 1927 which enjoys a presence in 500 districts of the country, has launched an initiative to organize meetings and seminars which are attended by a large number of school and college going children to promote peace and non-violence in society. This has helped the Foundation to expand its outreach and make an impact beyond Delhi and other metropolitan towns to Tier 2 and 3 cities like Moradabad, Amritsar etc.

iii) Collaboration with Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS): The segment of school children and youth has been identified by the Foundation as a priority area. We have collaborated with NVS for organizing essay writing, short story writing, poetry and painting competitions, separately amongst junior and senior students, to emphasize the importance of social harmony, cooperation, mutual trust and dialogue in society. Schools operated by NVS function in 600 districts of the country and their outreach is pan-Indian. In addition to NVS, the Foundation collaborates with more than 70,000 schools across the country as part of its Communal Harmony Campaign to promote our ancient heritage and legacy of togetherness, mutual respect, dialogue and cooperation.

iv) Significant increase in receipt of voluntary contributions: Voluntary contributions received by the Foundation for carrying out our multi-faceted activities showed a huge surge from around Rs. 4 crore in 2013-14 to more than Rs. 6 crore in 2014-15. This is testimony to the faith, belief and confidence that common people and institutions have in the work being carried out by the Foundation.

In addition to the above, several other events including Interfaith dialogues and seminars; publication of our Newsletter 'Sadbhavana Sandesh'; launch of our Facebook site; “Know My India” programme; seminars on “Role of Religion in promoting Peace and Communal Harmony”; cultural, literary and musical concerts; Talks and Presentations at several Civil Service Training Institutes, universities etc. have been conducted all over the country.

He said that the theme of Suleiman Charitra is one of inclusiveness and acceptance and celebration of diverse thoughts, beliefs and ideas which has been the hallmark of Indian culture, heritage and legacy over several millenia. This is the objective that NFCH seeks to promote and accomplish viz to focus on mutual respect for all religions, faiths and beliefs and to promote the all-embracing, broadminded, civilisational ethos of India which has permeated our thinking for thousands of years.

Book-reading of some selected passages of the publication was done by Shri Sunit Tandon in a well modulated and evocative voice.

Amb. AND Haksar speaking on Suleiman Charitra

Amb. AND Haksar briefed the audience that Kalyana Malla was an esteemed poet at the court of Lodhi prince Lad Khan in eastern Uttar Pradesh at the

thbeginning of 16 Century. He is known to have composed two still extant works for his princely patron. One of these was Ananga Ranga and the other a story collection Suleiman Charitra drawn from Islamic and Biblical stories. This engrossing, first-ever English translation of Suleiman Charitra - a delightful Sanskrit rendering of Hebraic and Arabic tales elegantly brings together flavours from the east and the west. He further mentioned that Suleiman Charitra by Kalyana Malla was composed in classical Sanskrit about 500 years ago. It comprises a celebrated love story of Judaic and Biblical origin

Suleiman Charitra by Kalyana Malla is a classic literature text in Sanskrit. It has been translated into English by former diplomat and well known translator of Sanskrit classic works Amb. A.N.D. Haksar. It is a strong reminder of our composite cultural heritage and showcases a fascinating panorama of different cultures that have been synthesized together.

narrated in three chapters, followed by a set of dramatic tales drawn from the Arabian Nights in the fourth. These contents, somewhat unusual in the literature of India's ancient language, are presented with its typical literary flair of idiom and embellishment, setting and style. All this adds special interest to a remarkable work.

The Chief Guest Shri Akhtarul Wasey delivered the Presidential Address. He enlightened the audience about the background and main attributes of 'Suleiman Charitra'. He emphasized that the manuscript has great linguistic as well as cultural relevance as its roots are embedded in Sanskrit, Hebraic, Arabic, Persian and Urdu. He stressed that the objective of 'dialogue' is 'communication', not ‘controversy' or ‘conflict’ and language

Participants and guests at Book Release Event of Suleiman Charitra at IIC, New Delhi

has a major role to play in establishing dialogue. However, sometimes 'language' is often wrongly linked with religion, which ultimately leads to controversy and social unrest. He categorically mentioned that language has no linkage with any particular religion. He cited a few examples. The popular song 'Bekas pe karam kijiye Sarkar-e-Madina...' was sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Naushad Ali, the famous Indian musician gave music to various Bhajans like 'Man tadpat Hari darshan ko Aaj', 'O duniya ke rakhwale'. He also referred to various literary works like Shunya Purana, Gita being translated in different Indian languages including Urdu; Qasasul Nabi-een, Majma ul Bahrain, Kitab e Hayat etc. which are most useful in promoting mutual understanding, fraternity and linguistic harmony.

After the opening remarks, the floor was opened for discussions and question-answer session. All the speakers on the dais responded at length and comprehensively to the queries from the participants.

Suleiman Charitra will go a long way in making people aware and appreciative of our rich cultural legacy and age old civilization and heritage of pluralism, harmony and peaceful co-existence.

Institutional Area, New Delhi. So far, Guild for Service since 45 years of its existence has successfully settled the lives of 50,071 girls from underprivileged background i nc lud ing w idows remar r i age , i n te r - cas te , intercommunity, differently abled couples for bringing a change in the society.

Dr. Mohini Giri, Amb. Ashok Sajjanhar and some eminent guests at the Group marriage

The newely wed couples were provided with a set of clothes as well as basic necessities to set up home in the initial stage. To make the occasion special for the couples, Guild for Service gifted mobile phones to all brides. The couples were provided Counseling/Guidance by Family Planning Association for their future by encouraging dowry less marriage, family planning, non consumption of alcohol and for saying ‘no to domestic violence’.

At the beginning, Dr. Mohini Giri extended a warm welcome to all guests. A small pooja was performed by Shri K.K Goel and Smt. Lata Goel for long lasting married life of newly wed couples. Dr. Giri emphasized that she strongly believes that a girl is not something to be donated. The ceremony hence was symbolized by giving blessings, love and prayers for the girls. She also made the boys and girls vow that they will love and respect each other and will not resort to any form of domestic violence.

Group marriages are rare in society. They seek to abolish the practice of dowry and promote inter-caste, inter-community marriages and widow remarriage. These give strength to people who are economically weak and are regarded as inferior in society. It is through such endeavors that the Guild for Service seeks to function as an instrument for change in society.

Amb. Ashok Sajjanhar participated in this group marriage programme as a Special Invitee. He blessed the newly weds with his words of encouragement and shared his thoughts on nurturing happy, peaceful and healthy relations in family life, which is very important for maintaining peace, equilibrium and harmony in the society and the country.

So far, Sri M and a team of 70 dedicated walkers accompanying him from Kanyakumari have covered close to 2500 kms. over the last 150 days. They are currently in Maharashtra till 3rd August, 2015. The organizers maintain that the walk is completely apolitical and is not affiliated to any religious or political organization. The group will observe fast on 5th July, 2015 at Pune in solidarity with the victims of terrorism and communal violence. The ‘padayatra’ carries the message of truth, hope, love, peace, harmony and oneness.
