A Letter from our Vice Pastor…

Worship Reminder

Last week I received a bright blue post card in the mail. “We’re looking forward to seeing you!” the card read as if spoken by the grey stripped kitten and the Boston Terrier on the front of the card. Maybe it’s because I am writing this letter as I prepare for Holy Week, or maybe it’s because I’m looking forward to seeing members I haven’t seen in a while at Easter, but for whatever reason receiving this postcard from my veterinarian made me think of worship. How strange would it be to receive a bright blue post-card from your church?

A Friendly Reminder from Zion Lutheran Church: Dear __________, Our records indicate that it’s about time for you and your family to visit worship for the following: Forgiveness Holy Communion The Word of God Spiritual Renewal

Please call us at 201-327-0655 to schedule your next visit. We look forward to seeing you soon! Thank you, Zion Lutheran Church

Strange indeed! While church may have some things in common with your doctor’s office such as seeking healing while hurting, exercising faith for preventative health, and so on, worship is not intended for mere faith booster shots. Worship is a place of community, NOT a transaction. We come to worship to receive spiritual nourishment AND to nourish others. We’re not in it alone. Sara Miles, an atheist turned Episcopal priest, puts it this way,

“[Communion] wasn’t a private meal. The bread of that table had to be shared with everyone in order for me to really taste it. And sharing it meant I was going to be touching Christ’s body at St. Gregory’s through Donald and Rick and the angry older deacon with the clenched jaw…. I was not going to get to sit by myself and think loftily about how much Jesus loves me in particular. I was not going to get to have dinner eternally with people just like me. I was going to get communion whether I wanted it or not, with people I didn’t necessarily like, people I didn’t choose, people such as my parents, or the strangers who fed me, the people God chose for me. I ate the bread.” (from Take this Bread: A Radical Conversion)

We eat this same bread every Sunday. We come together to become the body of Christ we share. I’ll admit it, it would be a lot easier to just show up for an annual God check-in. It would be a lot easier to worship God on my own doing something I enjoy, as many people do when they hike or ride a motorcycle. But I don’t come to worship because it’s easy; I come to worship because I am part of something bigger than myself. I am a member of the body of Christ. You are a member of the body of Christ. Worship and ministry at Zion isn’t the same without you. Come and worship.

Yours in Christ, Vice Pastor Jenny McLellan

Dear Fellow Members and Friends of Zion, April 1, 2019 We are already half-way through Lent as I write this letter to you all and before we know it, Holy Week will be here. There is no busier time in the church year than Holy Week. I sincerely hope that you’ll find time to participate in some, if not all, the special services and activities. There are a lot of flyers attached! We are especially fortunate to have Pastor Rich Bowman preaching on Maundy Thursday (7:30 pm), Pastor Scott Schatzenbach preaching on Palm Sunday (gathering at Fellowship Hall begins at 9:30 am), and Pastor Roy Almquist preaching Easter Sunday (11 am). Easter breakfast will start at 9 a.m. and run until 10:30 am – Tom Wegman and Russell Onody are hosting this year. A special thank you to the Altar Guild and Flower Ministry who will be working overtime during these upcoming weeks. Send in your spring flower/lily requests as soon as possible. The Fellowship Hall has undergone a wonderful transformation as you’ll see by the photos. Thank you to the property committee and those who helped move the furniture out and back into each space… that parlor furniture is heavy! Bill Auer is the man you want to paint ‘cause he gets the job done – thank you! Thank you to Tom Olszewski for the installation of the flooring and to Duane Topp for his carpentry skills in bringing a credenza back to beautiful usable condition and for helping me stain all the wood baseboard trim…that matches perfectly! The wooden cross was installed on the Fellowship Hall – thank you to Eddie Wegman for his efforts in getting this hung. Please continue to keep the Call Committee in your prayers and they proceed with the Candidate that they received from the Bishop on March 11th. Blessings to you all ~ Faithfully yours, Karin Topp, Council President

Easter Rejoice! Christ is Risen!

EASTER AT ZIONSunday, April 21, 2019Our Easter celebration starts with Breakfast from9:00am to 10:30am at the Fellowship Hall followed by an 11:00am Church Service—Message by Pastor Almquist

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church

Saddle River NJ—est. 1821

We are pleased to welcome The Rev. Dr. Roy AlmquistA native of northern New Jersey, Pastor Roy Almquist served Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, New Milford, and Zion Lutheran Church, Saddle River, both in New Jersey, before moving to West Chester, PA in 1984 to accept the call to the position as Senior Pastor at Calvary Lutheran Church.

While at Zion, the Almquist family had such a positive impact on the community. In 1975 he was the driving force behind the sponsorship of the Khieu family, a Vietnamese refugee family of seven, who lost everything during the Vietnam Conflict. The congregation provided housing in nearby Ramsey and found jobs for both parents at The Valley Hospital. This outreach program forever changed the lives of so many. To this day the relationship is still strong and unbroken.

To his acclaim, he served for twelve years as the Bishop of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a jurisdiction that included 175 congregations in the greater Philadelphia area.

After concluding that responsibility he returned to congregational ministry, as Interim Rector at St. Peter’s Church (2006-2008), and as Interim Rector and then as Priest-in-Charge at Washington Memorial Chapel (2008-2018).

On January 31, 2018, Pastor Almquist retired after serving eight and a half years at historic Washington Memorial Chapel, an Episcopal congregation, located in Valley Forge, PA. He and his wife Shannon live in Shannondell at Valley Forge and have two grown daughters and four grandchildren.

For those of you not familiar with Roy, he was Zion’s Pastor from 1977 to 1984 - and quote him, “some of my most wonderful years were spent with the people of Zion”. Pastor Almquist served with us when Zion sponsored the Khieu Family from Vietnam.

Zion Lutheran Church Call Committee Report | March 2019

March 22, 2019

Call Committee Members: Anne Naramore (Chair), Tom Wegman, Lisa Raffaelli, Cartney Ezyk, Cathie Smeedy, Nina Peterson 1. Rostered Minister Profile (RMP) candidate: The Call Committee received a candidate from the

Bishop on March 11, 2019.

Although details about the candidate cannot be explained in detail, I will mention that this candidate is from the mid-west.

2. Call Committee Review: The Call Committee met on Wednesday, March 20th to review the candidate’s RMP.

a. After much discussion, we identified numerous questions for Anne Naramore to discuss with Pastor Schantzenbach, who is assigned as our point of contact by the Bishop.

b. The Call Committee voted unanimously to move to the next stage in the process – to interview the candidate.

3. Discussion with Pastor Schantzenbach: Anne had a telephone discussion with Pastor Scott on

March 22nd to review our questions and identify next steps given our interest in scheduling an interview with the candidate.

4. Contact with Candidate: Per Pastor Schantzenbach’s recommendation, Anne has reached out to

the candidate to schedule the interview. Given the candidate lives in the mid-west, the first interview will be conducted via Skype. Per Pastor Schantzenbach, if the Call Committee agrees to move to the next stage with this candidate after the interview, this candidate will then be flown to NJ to meet with the Call Committee and preach at a local Lutheran congregation (to be arranged by the Bishop). This will be at the expense of Zion. There is a possibly of fast tracking this candidate if all goes well through the process.

5. Next Steps: Call Committee will interview this candidate as soon as possible.

Confirmation Retreat Recap The theme of our spring Confirmation retreat on March 15-16 was “Full Immersion into Baptismal Promises” with the purpose to help students further understand and apply the five baptismal promises they will make upon their confirmation. The 5 baptismal promises are:

1. To live among God’s faithful people; 2. To hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s Supper; 3. To proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed; 4. To serve all people following the example of Jesus; and 5. To strive for justice and peace in all the earth?

(The Lutheran Book of Worship, pg. 201) On Friday, after a stop at Burger King and thunder storm, we settled in at Crossroads Church Camp. Pastor Jenny introduced the theme and explained that the first two baptismal promises are inward gifts of discipleship, that our life is blessed. The last three baptismal promises are outward gifts of discipleship, that our life blesses others. Stephanie Doyle, Director of Faith Formation at Redeemer explained to the kids the first promise does indeed mean they should be members of a congregation. Then Pastor Mike Linderman from Redeemer taught the second promise using percussion instruments to discuss creation. We respond to the word of God as plants respond to the sun (or we respond to the Son). The Word showers us with love that we receive in the Lord’s Supper. We had evening worship (Vespers) that included communion. Finally, Friday night we made s’mores in the fireplace, sang songs, played with the percussion instruments and hung out before turning in for the night in the bunks. Saturday morning we had morning devotions (Matins) and breakfast followed by an awesome scavenger hunt. Each team had to solve five different word clues and take a photo at each clue location around Cross Roads. Each clue and location reinforced the five baptismal promises. After the scavenger hunt, Pastor Jenny showed the kids how to practice proclaiming the good news by sharing our faith stories. We also gave them some information on the Young Adults in Global Mission (YAGM) program before free time in which the girls headed out on a hike down to the old lake and the boys played basketball in the rec hall. After lunch, Pastor Jenny introduced the fourth baptismal promise (to serve all people following the example of Jesus) then we worked on a service project for Cross Roads, picking up sticks and branches that had fallen this winter in an outdoor picnic area. We did that for about an hour, in the beautiful weather. (I think using the wheelbarrows was probably the kids favorite part of this activity.) After a snack break, Stephanie went over the last baptismal promise, strive for justice and peace in all the earth. We discussed how the ELCA is a “publicly engaged church” and then the kids chose a topic that they felt passionate about and did a little research within the ELCA website. The kids chose topics like racial justice, justice for women, unaccompanied migrant children, and LGBTQIA+ rights. They then reported back to the group something they read that either surprised them or that they learned. Then it was free time and there was a wild game of Sardines along with time in the rec hall. Pastor Mike did a wrap of the 5 baptismal promises and reminded the kids that they aren’t alone trying to fulfill these promises. God, through the Holy Spirit, and their congregation will be there to support them. Pastor Jenny led closing worship that included a beautiful remembrance of baptism and communion. Then we packed up, ate dinner, and hit the road. Phew! It was an awesome 27 hours! Our only class in April will be Sunday, April 7th at 4:30pm at Redeemer.
