Tanzania. Are you ready for a magical holiday?

From the majestic snow-capped Mt Kilimanjaro, to the forested shores of LakeTanganyika, the world’s longest, second-deepest and least-polluted freshwater body, this is a land of astonishing beauty.

Explore amazing game reserves, like the Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera created over 3 millionyears ago and now home to an abundance of wildlife, to the wide open plains of the Serengeti. Tanzania is less populated than other areas of Africa, and part of its charm is that it offers a more

rustic African experience.

Tanzania is home to some of the most well-known safari destinations in Africa suchas the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater also known as the 7th natural wonder

of the world. Safaris here are often taken by road travelling through a few different regions and parks, with the same excellent local guide. Game drives are either en-route

to your lodge or from the hotel. Our vehicles are spacious 4x4 jeeps with guaranteed window seats and pop-up roofs.

A game drive is always an exhilarating experience. You never know what show the animals will put on for you and each drive is never the same as the last.

The ‘Big Five’ are a must-see, but the abundance of other animals, birds, insects and plants will fascinate you .In most safari lodges game drives are two or

three times per day, lasting a few hours each and including a stop for morning tea or evening sundowners in the African bush.

As the rains set in, this is the time of the annual rut, with half a million cows mated in less than a month as the herds consolidate in the woodlands and on the plains of the Serengeti’s Western Corridor.

Towards the end of the dry season, the short-grass plains of the southernmost Serengeti begin to dry out and the wildebeest commence (or continue) their journey. The biggest need is to fi nd water, so they head towards the western woodlands of the Grumeti and a trio of small lakes, Ndutu, Masek, and Lagarja.

From the western Serengeti, the herds head for the lush green pastures of the Masai Mara crossing rivers such as the Mbalageti and Grumeti along the way. Once on the grasslands, the wildebeest spend several months feeding and fattening once more. They regularly cross the Mara River (even several times!) to head to greener pastures, despite the life-or-death situation with the infestation of crocs in the waters looking for their next meal.

LAKE LAKE MANYARAMANYARA

When the fi rst of the rains are falling on the Serengeti’s short-grass plains, the wildebeest start heading south again. In this area the grass has large amounts of potassium that is needed for the young fetus development.

Although there is no ‘offi cial’ start to the Migration, a starting point is the birthing period which normally happens just before the long rains. The wildebeest cows drop their young in a synchronized birthing that sees some 300,000 to 400,000 calves born within two to three weeks of one another. This is a great time to see all the wildebeest together in a huge mass and the young are able to stand and run with their mothers within minutes of being born.

The Great Migration is known as one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World”. Nowhere in the world is the movement of animals as immense as this migration which sees over two million animals migrate from the Serengeti National Park to the Masai Mara.

Kilimanjaro. The Roof of Africa.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

One of the most amazing aspects of the mountain in the present day is the accessibilityof its peak to climbers with no mountain climbingequipment or real previous experience of scaling such heights. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountainthat regular tourists can climb, although it remains a considerable feat of human endurance!

Fitness Requirements

Although it is possible to simply trek a route to the pinnacle of Kibo without relying on professional climbing equipment, it remains a hard and serious endeavour that requires a level of physical fitness, stamina and a realistic awareness of the potentially damaging effects of high altitudes.Important to consult a doctor before the climb.

Kilimanjaro is the world's highest free standing, snow-covered equatorial mountain. Located in North-East of Tanzania, this magnificent beast can be seen from far into Kenya and

Amboseli National park.

Stages

Tropical ForestWith most of the old lowland forest now cultivated and settled, the first experience of the mountain environment begins with the dense vegetation of tropical montane forest between 1850m and around 2800m.

Open MoorlandFrom around 3,200m a wide expanse of moorlandextends beyond the heath and the cloud line, so that here the skies are generally clear, making thesunshine intense during the days and the nightscool and clear. The climbing incline remains gentle, but thinning oxygen provides less fuel to energise the muscles and can dramatically slow the pace of walking.

Alpine DesertBeyond 4,000m, this sensation intensifies as the landscape develops into a more bizarre alpine desert, with sandy loose earth and intense weather conditions and temperature fluctuationsso dramatic that barely any plant species surviveother than everlasting flowers, mosses and lichens

Saddle to SummitThe easterly routes, Marangu, Mweka, and Rongai all converge west of the saddle near Gillmans Point, between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Kibos crater is roughly circular with an inner cone extending to 5,800m, (100m lower than the summit at Uhuru Peak).

Mandara Hut 2,700m | Horombo Hut 3,720m | Kibo Hut 4,700mUhuru Peak 5,895m | Marangu Gate 1,830m

Most popular route and easiest way to the summit Large diversity of flora and fauna Permanent accommodation in huts Scenic walking trails

Day 2- Mandara Hut: From Mandara Hut the trail passes through a short stretch of forest and skirts the base of Maundi Crater, crosses a meadow and a wooded stream, then emerges into grassland. It is well worth the short detour to scramble up to the rim of Maundi Crater for a superb view of the mountain and its surroundings. The trail crosses numerous moorland ravines before ending at Horombo Hut, which is set in a rocky valley with a fine stand of giant sceneries or groundsels. Leaving behind the forest and following the ascending path through alpine meadows on to the slopes of Mawenzi.

Day 3 - Horombo Hut: From Horombo Hut there are two trails to the Saddle. The right fork is very stony and eroded and is the most direct route to the Saddle and Mawenzi. From the Saddle (about 2 hrs from Horombo), there are trails to Mawenzi Hut (hr) or Mawenzi Tarn Hut (2 hrs) and across the length of the Saddle to Kibo Hut (3 hrs). The left fork from Horombo Hut is an easier trail and emerges on the Saddle much closer to Kibo and about one kilometer from Kibo Hut. The landscape now becomes rockier and Rugged until the Saddle is reached. Kibo Hut is the overnight stay.

Day 4 - Kibo Hut: You will rise around 23h30, and this is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman’s point (5 681m), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort. Probably the most demanding section of the entire route.

Day 5 - Horombo Hut: After breakfast you continue your descent, passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. At Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. You now drive back for a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations!!

Prices are a guide only and will be confirmed on enquiry. Prices are in £’s per person based on two adults sharing a room and do not include international flights.

Day 1 - Marangu Gate: From the gate, you ascend a cleared ridge trail, formerly a vehicle track to Mandara Hut. The cleared trail is the fastest way to Mandara, but opportunities to see wildlife or enjoy the forest are limited due to the heavy foot traffic. An alternative is to ascend along the parallel forest trail and descend on the main trail. The forest trail branches off to the left, a few minutes after the gate, and follows the edge of a stream through the undergrowth. About halfway (1 1/2 hrs from the gate) you can choose to cross the stream and rejoin the main trail, or continue on the forest trail. Both trails continue on opposite sides of the stream, merging about one hour before Mandara Hut (2700m).

Day 1 - Machame Gate: We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail to the first camp, which is located at an altitude of 3,048 meters. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are essential here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Hut. Here we make camp, rest, enjoy our dinner, and overnight. You have now reached an altitude of 3,000 meters.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Machame Route

Machame Gate 1,800m | Machame Camp 3,000m | Baranco Camp 3,860mBarafu Camp 4,600m | Uhuru Peak 5,895m | Mweka Camp 3,100m | Mweka Gate 1,800m

Day 2 - Machame Camp: As you gain altitude, notice the change in vegetation. The trees diminish in size, giving way to Kilimanjaro’s famous high altitude plants, Scenecio kilimanjari and Lobelia deckeni. After eating lunch, climb the Shira Plateau, created when Kibo’s lava flows filled the Shira crater. Continue to Shira Camp, where you will relax for the rest of the day. Kibo lies to the west and Mount Meru to the east.

Day 3- Barranco Camp: After breakfast, hike east on the Shira Plateau before reaching the junction for the Shira and Lemosho Routes. Continue on through the barren landscape before stopping for lunch. Shortly after lunch, reach the highest point of the day before descending quickly to Barranco Camp. Faster hikers can take a detour via Lava Tower, a 300-foot lava formation jutting out of the mountainside.

Day 4 - Barafu Camp: After breakfast, we leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, through the Karanga Valley (4200m), and the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue to the Barafu Hut, which is located at an altitude of 4,600 meters. You have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are to be seen from this position.

Day 6 - Mweka Gate: After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep raingear and warmer clothing handy). A vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to Moshi or Arusha. It is time for celebrations with this lifetime achievement!!

Day 5 - Mweka Camp: The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers.

The most challenging route up KilimanjaroLarge diversity of flora and fauna Tented campsScenic walking trails

Day 1 - Machame Gate: The majority of the hike on this first day is through the Montana Forest. Lush vegetation with very old trees and lilts of ferns and mosses mark this as an area that gets reliable rain year round. The forest abounds with wildlife; small bushbuck & duikers as well as monkeys. There is also rich and varied bird life. The first three hours or so is on gently rising land before steepening for the last two hours. The camp for the night is in a small clearing on the trail.

Day 2 - Umbwe Cave Camp: Shortly after starting the hike the forest gradually gives away to the giant heath. The trail has been following a ridge for some time and as it ascends through the heath land the ridge narrows and sharpens, finally becoming knife edge with steep drops on each side. As the height of the heath reduces there are stunning views of both Kilimanjaro’s southern flank and across the Mount Meru some 50 miles away. The camp is overlooking the Barranco Valley with views up towards Arrow Glacier.

Day 3 - Barranco Camp: On the eastern side of the valley, across the stream is the Barranco Wall – a 950 ft. barrier of volcanic rock. Although it is tall and looks steep, it is very easy to climb. The views from the wall are nothing less than magnificent. The rest of the day is spent skirting the base of Kibo peak. We descend down into the Karanga Valley, where we rest up for the night before the tough climb up to Barafu hut.

Day 4 - Karanga Camp: From Karanga the tour heads up a moraine ridge taking your time and going slowly. The views here can be spectacular on the southern glaciers and of the glacial valleys that snake their way down the mountain. The final stage to Barafu is quite steep, and as always it’s taken it very slowly. As with the day before you reach camp by around lunch time leaving lots of time to prepare and relax. In the evening your guide briefs you for the final ascent.

Day 5 - Barafu Camp: Very early in the morning , we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point (5685m), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see .From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all they way on your ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.

Day 6 - Mweka Camp: After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates.
