Ali Mustafa, a digital journal-ist who has covered the news for several media networks

including Al Jazeera English, VICE news, and CBC in Canada, is spend-ing several weeks at Northwestern University (NU-Q) meeting with students and sharing his experi-ences as an international reporter. He currently produces content for TRT World, a Turkish public broad-caster’s digital English content service.

Mustafa, who has taught classes at NU-Q in the past, is attending several multimedia and digital reporting classes to advise students on current trends and to share his thoughts on journalism and accu-rate reporting. Using his expertise in the field, he is advising journal-ism students on the importance of learning how to create multiple ver-sions of the same story for different

media platforms. “Mustafa is a jour-nalist with the skills to identify humanitarian storie.Using multi-media experiences he has developed, and sharing them with our students, helps bring to life the theories and practices Northwest-ern students learn in the classroom. It also exposes them to the oppor-tunities that they will be able to pursue as professionals,” said Ever-ette E. Dennis, dean and CEO at NU-Q.

“NU-Q is training some of the best journalists and content gener-ators in the Middle East, and the university is a sort of incubator for new ideas and innovation. I am interested in utilising NU-Q’s excel-lent student body, as well as its new state-of-the-art facilities to further innovate the students in the digital realm,” said Mustafa.

Mustafa engaged in a dialogue

about the role of social media, and how such immediate content gen-erating outlets are changing the ways in which news is gathered and shared.

“The distinction between student journalists and professional con-tent generators such as myself is fast disappearing,” he said. “In fact,

students have an edge here as they are exposed to new ideas and adapt to changing technologies faster than journalists in the field. The aim should be to convert journalism instruction into practice.”

Other discussions with students centred around video production and alternatives to using heavy duty equipment when needed. Mustafa screened some of his work in Greece and Iraq, as he interviewed various refugees on their living con-ditions and personal aspirations, often using his iPhone to film and report. “Before telling any story, you have to visualise it and under-stand the message you’re trying to convey. Then, you can analyse what components are needed to tell the story. It’s an upside down approach, but it really helps journalists main-tain objective reporting,” Mustafa said.

Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) welcomed the first members of the

‘Class of 2021’ at a dinner for those who have been admitted through Early Decision.

Sheikha Athba Al Thani, adviser to the CEO of Qatar Diar-Vinci Construction and mother of a first-year CMU-Q student, delivered a keynote speech to the new students, their parents, fac-ulty and staff.

Al Thani said; “I have seen the changes in my daughter’s personality, the way she has devel-oped her independence in a very short time, and for that I thank Carnegie Mellon for their sup-port. I would like to reassure you that your kids in are in the right hands.”

Ilker Baybars, Dean and CEO of CMU-Q, noted that several faculty members were at the dinner to welcome the new students: “Through-out your studies, your professors will challenge you, support you and guide you. They are experts in their fields, and they are also dedicated

educators. I encourage you to reach out, ask questions, and use the full resources we have available for you.”

There were 15 students admitted to the Class of 2021 through Early Decision, including Shouq Al Khuzaei, who said, “I feel very proud that I got accepted, and so are my parents. I really worked hard and it was very stressful, but it ended well.”

This is the second year that CMU-Q has offered Early Decision. A select group of students were invited to apply early, and decision letters were sent on December 15. For exceptional stu-dents who wish to study at CMU-Q, Early Decision is an opportunity to secure their place well in advance of the regular application dead-line. CMU-Q will continue to accept applications for the fall semester until March 1, 2017.

In an important initiative, Sid-ra’s Health Promotion team launched a car seat safety awareness campaign at the Sidra Outpatient Clinic this

week. The team partnered with Kulluna, a national safety cam-paign, to offer parents advice and guidance on how to properly use child’s car seat and also helped install car seats and conducted

child safety seat checks. During the campaign visitors

to the Sidra Outpatient Clinic were taught Child Passenger Safety Technicians on how to fix a car seat appropriately. Pamphlets with top five car seat checkup list from Kulluna was given out to par-ents at the Sidra Outpatient Clinic during the campaign.

There are currently eight health promoters at Sidra who have been certified as Child Pas-senger Safety Technicians.

Fatima Al Muhamadi, a Sidra health promoter, said, “Child car seat safety should be the first thing that all parents need to consider when travelling with their child. There is a high percentage of car seats that are not used or installed correctly. This even applies to child restraints and seat belts. We urge parents to make use of this fantastic service by Kulluna. Installing a car seat properly and following some key safety rules can go a long way towards saving a child’s life.”

A properly fitted car seat can save a child’s life in an accident but many parents often don’t have it installed correctly. Car seat safety awareness campaigns are being held most importantly that proper use of child car seats could prevent deaths and serious inju-ries among children due to road traffic accidents.

Parents learn about car seat safety

Right seat This is an easy one. Check the label on your car seat to make sure its appropriate for your child’s age, weight and height. Like milk your car seat has an expiration date. Just double check the label on your car seat to make sure it is still safe.

Right Place Kids are VIPs, just ask them. We know all VIPs ride on the rear seat. So keep all children in the back rear until they are 13.

Right Direction You have to keep your child in a rare facing car seat for as long as possible, usually until around age 2. When he or she outgrows the seat move your child to the forward facing car seat.

Inch Test Once your car seat is installed, give it a good shake at the base. Can you move it than an inch side to side or back to back? A properly installed seat will move more than an inch.

Pinch Test Make sure the harness is tightly buckled and coming from the correct locks. (Check car seat manual). Now with the chest clip placed at armpit level, pinch the strap at your child’s shoul-der. If you are unable to pinch any excess webbing, you are good to go.

Top five things to do

COVER STORYTHURSDAY 2 FEBRUARY 2017 05A child sitting in the front seat of a car is the

most vulnerable in a traffic accident. Particu-larly under the age of four, almost all who suffer serious injuries and those who die in the coun-try would have not used a car seat, says Dr Khalid Abdulnoor Saifeldeen, Director of Hamad International Training Centre and Chairman of the Kulluna safety campaign.

With a large number of parents not using a car seat for the child, Kulluna begun an initia-tive which strongly emphasis on child car passenger safety. Safe Kids Qatar partnered with Kulluna in making the initiative a success.

Within two years it has trained 120 Child Passenger Safety Technicians. Majority of them are from the health sector.

A four day training session focuses on teach-ing participants to become child passenger safety technicians so that they can teach par-ents and caregivers how to choose and correctly install the appropriate car seat for their children.

Child passenger seats are recommended for all children until the age of 10 years and it is essential to select the appropriate seat for every child depending on height and weight.

Child Passenger Safety Technicians at awareness campaigns spot mistakes and show parents how to fix errors, making the seat safe and suitable for the child.

Some cooks head to the kitchen at the first sign of those in need, a bit like firefighters who rush to answer emergency calls.

Homemade food can help when a friend is ill, a heart is broken, a new neighbour has moved in or a relative has welcomed home a new baby. In such situations, I turn to one recipe that is spirit-building and tummy-warming: lamb stew.

Use a heavy pan that can take the heat, and brown the meat until it is suitably crusted. That deep color will tint the all-important gravy. The onions, too, need to brown significantly. Because small and sweet cipollini onions are more widely available, I was inspired to use them instead of the pearl onions I typically reach for. Any onions can be a pain to prep, but all the peeling is worth it for this stew.

Pour in a liquid such as malbec, merlot, cahors: opulent choices for the gravy base and equally suitable in a glass alongside. This stew can stand up to a hearty red.

Ingredients• 2/3 cup flour• 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, plus more as

needed• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus

more as needed• 3 tablespoons olive oil• 1 lamb shank (1 to 1 1/2 pounds total)• 21/2 pounds boneless lamb shoulder (excess

fat trimmed), cut into 2-inch chunks• 12 ounces cipollini onions, root ends removed

(see headnote)• 6 medium carrots (trimmed), scrubbed well

and cut crosswise into 1-inch chunks• 3 ribs celery, cut crosswise in 1/2-inch slices• 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter• Herb bundle, tied with kitchen twine (10 pars-

ley stems, 6 thyme stems, 2 rosemary stems, 1 bay leaf, 1 whole star anise)

• 3 wide strips lemon peel (no pith)• 4 cups no-salt-added chicken or veal broth• 10 to 15 tiny red potatoes or 8 to 12 medium

red potatoes (11/2 pounds total)• 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen petite green peas

StepsPreheat the oven to 325 degrees. Cut a piece

of parchment to fit just inside the pot.

Place 1/3 cup of the flour on a plate or in a shallow bowl; stir in 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and 1/4 teaspoon of the black pepper.

Heat the oil in a large (5-quart or larger) Dutch oven or a big, heavy skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the lamb shank and brown well on all sides, 8 to 10 min-utes. Transfer to a heatproof bowl. Keep the pan over medium heat.

Use paper towels to pat dry the pieces of lamb shoulder. Coat the meat in the seasoned flour, then add it to the hot pan, taking care not to crowd the pan. Brown the pieces on all sides, then transfer them to the bowl holding the shank.

Add the cipollini onions to the pan and brown them well, turning them at least once; this should take about 10 minutes. Add the carrots, celery and butter, stirring to coat as the butter melts into the oils in the pan. Sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup of flour over the vegetables in the pan, stir well and cook until the flour begins to brown, about 5 minutes. Add the herb bundle, the strips

of lemon peel and the remaining 1 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper.

Slide the lamb shank and pieces of lamb shoulder, plus any accumulated juices, into the pan. Pour the liquid over everything and turn up the heat, bringing it to a boil and cooking off the strong smell, 3 to 5 minutes once it’s boiling. Add the broth and return to a boil.

Cover the stew with the parchment paper (placing it directly on the surface) and then cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Transfer to the middle oven rack and cook until the meat is ten-der, 11/2 to 2 hours.

Meanwhile, put the potatoes in a medium saucepan. Cover with water and add a big pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat; cook until tender, 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the potatoes’ size. Drain. Once the stew is fin-ished, discard the herb bundle and strips of lemon peel. Remove the lamb shank from the stew; detach the meat and return it to the pot in chunks. Discard the bone.

People on the bottom rung of the socioeconomic ladder may live two years less on

average than those at the top, according to a large-scale study published yesterday.

This makes social rank a bigger risk factor for illness and prema-ture death than either high alcohol consumption or obesity, and it nearly equals the risk posed by physical inactivity, researchers said.

On average, a low social rank shaved over 25 months off the aver-age lifespan, compared with six months for heavy alcohol intake and eight months for obesity, according to Lifepath, a European

Commission-funded consortium that conducted the study.

For diabetes, the risk was almost four years in lost life, and for smoking nearly five. The study was the first attempt to weigh the health risk of socioeconomic sta-tus against other “modifiable” factors, the authors said, at least in high-income countries.

“Low socioeconomic status is one of the strongest predictors of premature mortality worldwide, but health policymakers often do not consider it a risk factor to target,” Lifepath said in a statement.

“Because these circumstances are modifiable, they should be included in the list of risk factors targeted by global health strategies,” said

Silvia Stringhini of the Lausanne University Hospital, the lead author of the study. Smoking, drinking and physical inactivity are already the focus of national and global public health policies. Social rank could be improved by government poli-cies on tax or education, for

example, said the study, published in The Lancet. The researchers reviewed data from 48 previous studies covering more than 1.7 mil-lion people from seven countries

-- Australia, Britain, France, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and the United States.

Researchers have invented a hand-held breath moni-tor that can potentially

detect flu virus and help prevent flu epidemics from spreading.

The device could eventually be available in drug stores so that people can be diagnosed quickly and take advantage of medicines used to treat the flu in its earliest stages. “I think that technology like this is going to revolutionise personalised diagnostics,” said Perena Gouma, Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington in the US.

“This will allow people to be proactive and catch illnesses early and the technology can eas-ily be used to detect other diseases such as Ebola virus dis-ease, simply by changing the sensors,” said Gouma, who has described her invention in the journal Sensors. Gouma’s device

is similar to the breathalysers used by police officers when they suspect a driver to be under the influence of alcohol.

A patient simply exhales into the device, which uses semicon-ductor sensors like those in a household carbon monoxide detector.

The difference is that these sensors are specific to the gas detected, yet still inexpensive, and can isolate biomarkers associated with the flu virus and indicate whether or not the patient has the flu. Researchers believe that the device may help prevent flu epi-demics from spreading, protecting both individuals as well as the public health.

Chronic episodes of a dip in the sugar levels in the brain may trigger the onset

of cognitive decline, especially memory loss leading to Alzhe-imer’s disease, researchers warned.

The study showed that the decline in glucose levels in hip-pocampus -- a brain region that plays a key role in processing and storing memories -- appears in the early stages of mild cognitive impairment, that is before the symptoms of memory problems begin to surface. The hippocam-pus and other regions of the brain rely exclusively on glucose for fuel without which the neurons starve and eventually die.

“One of the changes that has been consistently reported in the brains of patients with different degrees of cognitive impairment, is a decrease in glucose availa-bility in the hippocampus,” said Domenico Pratico, Professor at the Temple University in

Pennsylvania, US. The findings may also explain why diabetics are more at risk of dementia as long-term small decreases in glu-cose lead to brain damage.

“There is a high likelihood that those types of episodes are related to diabetes, which is a condition in which glucose can-not enter the cell,” Pratico added.

For the study the team used a mouse model that were treated with 2-deoxyglucose (DG) -- a compound that stops glucose from entering and being utilised by cells.

A fantastical blue bird emerges from leaves in the latest work by Manuel Mendive,

considered Cuba’s top living artist. But this isn’t a framed canvas, it’s a painting on a dress, for the exhibit

“Fashion Art Havana” that opened on Tuesday.

In creations by other Cuban art-ists, a ghostly face seems to scream out from a dark cape, a red and blue matryoshka doll is painted onto a dress, while a bubble-shaped frock is covered with wooden spikes.

The show is the latest in the “Fashion Art” series by Spanish designer Manuel Fernandez, who has worked with artists all over the world to create one-off garments at the intersection of both disci-plines. “Art doesn’t have to always be hung on walls, it could also be

on floor tiles, earrings, tights or many other places,” Fernandez said.

Participating artists said at the opening they had high hopes the exhibit would help fashion become viewed in Communist-ruled Cuba as more than a mere consumerist indulgence. “Fashion is also art, and this is a concept we need to start understanding here,” said Jorge Perugorría, who painted a graphic black and white design on his dress.

Fernandez said he first designs a garment for an artist, letting their work and personality inspire the form. He leaves the fabric blank though, like a canvas for them to then paint. Given that he lets the artists paint whatever they wish, he has no idea what his shows will look like until the very last minute - a nail-bit-ing experience. In the case of

“Fashion Art Havana”, which will run

in Havana’s sumptuous, neo-baroque Gran Teatro until February 11, Fern-andez said he was struck with how two painters ended up drawing on Russian themes. This testified to the

strong influence the Soviet Union had on Cuba during their Cold War alliance, something you would not find in other Latin American cultures.

A cat, named Pooh, who lost his back legs in a road acci-dent is back on a set of

bionic feet after groundbreaking surgery in Bulgaria.

The one-year-old stray was found injured in the countryside near the city of Pleven in April. Months later, surgeon Vladislav Zlatinov drilled into what was left of Pooh’s limbs and fitted two blade-like implants. Pooh can’t go back to his old life, sleeping

outdoors and taking scraps of food from villagers. So staff at Sofia’s Central Vet Clinic are looking for a new home. There have already been several applicants.

“We’re very proud,” said Zlati-nov as Pooh chased a toy mouse around him. “It was quite a success ... It gives hope to other patients.” Zlatinov followed the lead of vet-erinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick who fitted new hind legs on a cat called Oscar in Britain in 2009.

The rib of a long-necked, plant-eating dinosaur that lived 195 million years ago

has yielded what may be the old-est remains of soft tissue ever recovered, scientists said.

The find promises a chance to extract rare clues about the biology and evolution of long-extinct animals, a team wrote in the journal Nature Communica-tions. Such information is mostly missing from preserved hard skeletons, which form the bulk of the fossil record.

“We have shown the presence of protein preserved in a 195 mil-lion-year-old dinosaur, at least 120 million years older than any other similar discovery,” study co-author Robert Reisz of the University of Toronto Missis-sauga, told AFP.

“These proteins are the build-ing blocks of animal soft tissues, and it’s exciting to understand how they have been preserved,”

he added. Reisz and a team scanned a rib bone of Lufengo-saurus, a common dinosaur in the Early Jurassic period. Fully grown, these lizards measured about eight metres (26 feet).

The researchers used a pho-ton beam at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center in Taiwan to examine the insides of the bone, specifically its chemical contents. They found evidence of collagen proteins within tiny canals in the rib and concluded they were “probably remnants of the blood vessels that supplied blood to the bone cells in the living dinosaur.”

Most previous studies had extracted organic remains by dis-solving away other parts of the fossil, the team said. With the synchrotron method, this is not necessary, and even older remains may be uncovered with-out damaging dinosaur bones in future.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s “Raees” has become 2017’s first entry into

the `100-crore club in India, mak-ers have said.

“Raees” collected `109.01 crore in India in seven days since its release on January 25 with Hrithik Roshan starrer “Kaabil”. According to a statement issued on behalf of

“Raees” makers, its overseas figures stand at $9.2m, with some screens and territories yet to report.

After becoming the film to col-lect highest revenues on the

Republic Day holiday, Raees also becomes SRK’s 7th film to enter `100-crore club. “The latest reports also inform that the film has smashed the box office record in Singapore by collecting $226,000, which is touted to be the highest ever weekend for any Bollywood film in this market,” the statement read. Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertain-ment, the film features Shah Rukh as a bootlegger in a story set against the backdrop of liquor prohibition in Gujarat. The Rahul Dholakia directorial does not see Shah Rukh in his trademark romantic avatar.

Veteran music director Uttam Singh, who has

worked on movies like “Dil To Pagal Hai”, “Bagh-ban” and “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha”, feels the Hindi film industry needs to come up with new music rather than recre-ating old tracks. “If the recreation of an old song is really good, then it is fine. But every time when you recreate old songs, then it is proved that you don’t have to offer something new and

original,” Singh said here at the launch of Gujarati track

“Pehlo prem”. “Earlier, music directors didn’t recreate old songs. They always came with original songs. I feel recreating old music and giving own name is not right. It’s high time to come up with original music rather

than recreating the old ones.” Singh feels the taste of the audience has not changed, but the lack of original music compels them to listen to what Bolly-wood gives them today.

The teaser poster of “Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi”, which was unveiled on Wednesday, promises a bitter-sweet

cultural clash and family madness. The looks of its cast Rishi Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Vir Das and Payal Ghosh are still under wraps. The teaser poster’s illustrations clearly indicate that there will be love, drama and clash between the families of a couple from Gujarat and Punjab. The poster reads: “Culture ‘Kushti’ begins sum-mer 2017”.

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor has launched a series of fun sticker emoticons on her own digital app. The stickers are fashioned on her looks from

films like “I Hate Luv Storys”, “Aisha”, “Neerja”, “Dolly Ki Doli” and “Khoobsurat”, read a statement.

All the stickers will be available on her personal app and can be down-loaded from Google Play. The actress, who is known for her image of a fashion icon, received a lot of appreciation for her per-formance in “Neerja” last year. This year, she will work in “Veere Di Wedding”.

Designer Amit Aggarwal, who will show-case his latest line at the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Summer/Resort 2017 here,

considers Bollywood stars as an important influ-ence in setting fashion trends across the country.

“Bollywood is one of the few things that run the major chunk of entertainment business in our country. It also has a huge potential of edu-cating people regarding new social concepts. This makes it an important influencing factor for the minds of a huge population of a coun-try like India,” Aggarwal told IANS in an interview.

The designer feels if a Bollywood celebrity

flaunts one’s creation, it helps give the label a push. “Engaging with Bollywood for a fashion label like ours is always an interesting affair. A celebrity in our clothes is a role model for a whole lot of women who wish to dress new and fresh,” he added. Overall, Aggarwal feels there has been a great change in the fashion scene in India. He believes the fashion fraternity has taken forward the legacy of Indian bridal cou-ture by amalgamating it with fresh techniques and cuts.

At the same time, he finds that the involve-ment of Indian crafts by designers at a global level has kept the country on the world map in the international fashion scene.

Johnny Depp’s lavish spending -- including $3m to blast author Hunter S. Thompson’s ashes from a cannon -- led him to the brink

of financial ruin, according to an explosive lawsuit filed on Tuesday.

Over the best part of two decades, the 53-year-old actor has been spending $2m a month, according to The Management Group (TMG), which is suing the star in Los Angeles for an unpaid loan.

The “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor is alleged to have forked out $75m on 14 homes, including a 45-acre (18-hectare) French cas-tle, a chain of Bahaman islands, several Hollywood homes, penthouse lofts in down-town LA and a horse farm in Kentucky.

Since 2000, the Oscar-nominated actor has spent $18m on a yacht, bought 45 luxury cars and shelled out almost $700,000 a month on wine, private planes and a staff of 40 peo-

ple, according to the lawsuit.Beverly Hills-based TMG says Depp has

accrued more than 200 artworks by Warhol, Klimt and other masters, 70 collectible gui-tars and a Hollywood memorabilia collection so extensive it is stored in 12 locations.

Depp filed his own $25m suit on January 13 accusing TMG of mismanaging his finances, taking out loans without his approval, and concealing his ruinous finances.

Actress Nicole Kidman is in early nego-tiations to join the cast of “Aquaman” as the mother of the superhero, played

by Jason Momoa. Warner Bros ’

“Aquaman”, being helmed by James Wan, will release in October 2018.

“Aquaman” is based on the DC Comics character who is king of Atlantis, born half-human as Arthur Curry and half-Atlantean. Aquaman’s mother is Atlanna, who has escaped the underwater kingdom and had a son with a lighthouse keeper, reports variety.com.

The production on “Aquaman” will start in April in Australia. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who starred on Netflix’s “The Get Down”, has been tapped to play the villain Black Manta.

Singer Lady Gaga will announce her Joanne tour after headlining the half-time performance at the Super Bowl on February 6. According to usmag-

azine.com, Gaga will announce her seventh tour. She concluded her most recent arena tour - Cheek to Cheek Tour with Tony Bennett in August 2015.

During an October 2016 interview, the Grammy winner -- who has been sporting a toned-down, rocker-chic look lately -- had suggested that the Joanne tour will feature the outrageous ensembles and extravagant sets that made her previous tours memorable.

Executives at British Academy Film Awards are fearing that Hollywood stars will use their acceptance speeches at to

promote their political views.Several celebrities, including Meryl Streep

and Dev Patel, have voiced their views on US President Donald Trump both onstage and on the red carpet recently. According to The Sun, the producers of the ceremony, organ-ised by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), believe an endless

string of speeches regarding the presidential election would be a disaster -- resulting in the BBC broadcast potentially being edited if more than the odd reference is made, reports dailymail.co.uk. Bafta heads are now report-edly afraid that this year’s ceremony, which will be held on February 12, will be full of celebrities vocalising their political standpoint

-- thus detracting from the films being recog-nised. Bafta heads have no intentions to acknowledge their fears to the stars.

Singer Alicia Keys f inds Indo-Canadian digital

influencer Lilly Singh, also known by her YouTube username IISuperwomanII, an inspiration for pro-moting love among women.

The R&B star doesn’t believe in the cliché that “women are catty”, and instead feels women should empower one another. “There is this fallacy about how women are catty, that we’re all in com-petition with each other. I’d say, as opposed to getting swept up in jealousy, use that pang to give you an indication of what you are looking for,” Keys said in an interview for the new issue of Glamour magazine, people.com reported.

Citing one example of a woman who is doing so, Keys said: “Actually, there is this awesome performer Lilly Singh, who always does this thing: ‘Shout out another girl and tell her what you love about her’.”

Nissan Motor Co has taken a step back into petrol hybrids with its Note

e-Power model, which the Japa-nese automaker hopes will act as a gateway for drivers who will later shift to all-electric cars.

The move will also trim Nis-san’s costs. Nissan’s battery-electric Leaf, the industry’s first mass-mar-ket, all-electric car launched in 2010, is the world’s top-selling electric vehicle (EV), but sales have failed to reach initial targets.

Globally, more than 250,000 Leaf cars have been sold. With drivers yet to be fully won over by electric cars, Nissan hopes its new “near-electric” hybrid - which shares some parts with the Leaf - will allow it to shave costs and fend off competition in developing cheaper electric cars.

It’s a reversal of sorts for Nis-san. When it developed the Leaf, CEO Carlos Ghosn signaled Nissan would leapfrog petrol-hybrid tech-nology and go straight to battery-powered cars with zero emissions.

It is true that money does not grow on trees but elec-tricity might someday, as

scientists have developed a prototype biomimetic tree that mimics the branches and leaves of a cottonwood tree and generates electricity when its artificial leaves sway in the wind. Researchers from Iowa State University found that the technology could spawn a niche market for small and visually unobtrusive machines that turn wind into electricity.

“The possible advantages here are aesthetics and its smaller

scale, which may allow off-grid energy harvesting. We set out to answer the question of whether you can get useful amounts of electrical power out of something that looks like a plant,” said Michael McCloskey, associate profes-sor at Iowa University.

“Tapping energy from those leaves would increase their functionality,” McCloskey said. This prototype device features a metallic trellis, from which hang a dozen plastic flaps in the shape of cottonwood leaves.

Communication in data centres in near future can

become hassle-free as engineers are proposing to eliminate most of the wires and substitute infrared free-space optics for communica-tions. Though researchers from Pennsylvania State University tried radio

frequency signalling, the beams became wide over short distances.

The Microsoft engi-neers found that radio-frequency signal-ling resulted in high interference, limited active links and limited throughput -- the amount of data that can go through a system.

Facebook Inc is creating an app for television set-top boxes, including

Apple Inc’s Apple TV, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The world’s biggest online social network is also in dis-cussions with media companies to license long-f o r m , T V - q u a l i t y programming, the Journal reported on Tuesday.

An app for set-top boxes would bring Facebook closer to live video and video advertisements.

Getting advertisers to buy more video ads is key to Face-book’s continued revenue growth as such ads fetch higher rates from advertisers than text or photo-based ads.

Live video is also becom-ing a highly competitive feature on social platforms, with companies competing to stream major sports events and exclusive video compo-nents from high-profile events such as the Oscar and Grammy awards shows.
