Safe at HomeVIRGINIA HOUSING AWARD WINNER

Dear Friends—Whether we’re tackling a plumbing leak or revitalizing multiple homes in a target neighborhood,

the steps are the same: listen, observe, study, plan, listen, problem-solve, listen, get all the right

people and partners and equipment and resources in place, and then make the fix. If there’s more

to be done, listen some more, and go back and do more.

This act—of repair, of renewal—is both practical and symbolic. Done right, it represents and

requires intention, commitment, focus, skill, and care.

In 2017, you made it possible for us to act many times over. You joined us as volunteers and

partners, you donated supplies and appliances and expertise, and you contributed funds.

Together, we completed 32 rehabs, 163 emergency repairs, and 22 energy upgrades. We built

ramps, repaired floors, insulated attics, upgraded electrical systems, and rebuilt roofs. We made

sure families had heat and clean water and a safe way in and out of their homes. Nothing

fancy and everything necessary—and your intention, commitment, focus, skill, and care this past

year means that 266 people in 123 households will be safe, warm, and dry tonight.

In the wake of Charlottesville’s summer of hate, AHIP holds fast to fixing things. We love the

tangible, productive, healing act of reparation. We believe in partnership and problem-solving,

and we pledge to do our part to support our neighbors who seek housing security, affordability,

and justice—from tackling plumbing leaks to preserving homes and neighborhoods.

Thank you for joining us in 2017 and for looking ahead with us to 2018. There is much work to be

done together to make sure that everyone is safe at home.

With gratitude,

Jennifer JacobsExecutive Director

Sen

iors Greater Charlottesville is

an age-friendly destination

for retirees, thanks to

our cultural offerings,

world-class healthcare

facilities, and natural

beauty. For many local

senior citizens, though,

aging can intensify poverty and turn their

homes into dangerous places. When our

seniors find themselves no longer able

to safely navigate stairs or bathrooms or

cover critical repairs, our supporters make

sure they have a place to call for help.

AHIP is proud to be a partner in the local

ecosystem of organizations working to

keep our older neighbors safe, healthy,

and independent so that they can age in

place with dignity. ●89. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

When homes are safe and stable,

everyone does better: families, local

schools, and local workplaces. AHIP

works alongside many nonprofits,

agencies, and philanthropic organizations

to fulfill a promise to our kids that we

will do all we can to make sure they have

what they need to thrive. Our program

fixes housing crises as quickly as we

can so that local parents and caregivers

can get back to what’s

most important: nurturing

their children’s emotional

and behavioral well-being

for a successful and stable

life ahead. ●

In 2017, our longtime

partnership with LEAP

expanded from

Charlottesville to Albemarle.

Now, we’re serving both city

and county households in

need of energy-efficiency

measures. AHIP’s Energy Retrofit Initiative

sets out to make every client’s home

healthy, energy efficient, and affordable

to live in. By adding this critical layer

of home repairs—such as air-sealing,

insulating, and replacing outdated, oil-

or wood-based heating options with

high-efficiency heat pumps—our

homeowners feel the same benefits we

all share in improved home efficiency

and health, lower heating and cooling

costs, and a reduction in the residential

energy footprint. ●

When you come home to water all over

your kitchen floor or a heating system

that has given out, it’s easy to take

for granted that, though it will be an

expensive nuisance, it will soon be fixed.

But for many in our community, these

nuisances are disasters that won’t ever fit

into the budget—and wouldn’t ever get

fixed. AHIP is the only local organization

responding year-round to relatively

minor but urgent repair

needs to ensure the safety

and well-being of our

neighbors. Thanks to our

generous supporters,

panicked callers find relief

when AHIP’s crews come

to help. ●

From the bustling streets of

Charlottesville to the remote,

rural areas of Albemarle, our

Block-by-Block target-area

model has successfully

preserved and improved

affordable neighborhoods. Enthusiastic

investment from public and private

partners allows us to focus on discrete

neighborhoods for more concentrated

impact. Last year saw us winding down

our massive 10th & Page initiative,

making progress in the Orangedale and

Alberene neighborhoods, and beginning

outreach and planning for the next

target-area effort in Belmont. We are

honored to serve these vital neighborhoods

by keeping families safe, preserving

and improving affordable housing, and

protecting against gentrification. ●

As local need for our critical repair and

retrofit services remains high (more than

500 households are waiting for AHIP’s

help), our partnerships drive innovative

solutions to fill project gaps and do more

work for the seniors, children, people

with disabilities, and hard-working

neighbors we help. In 2017, AHIP marked

its sixth year partnering with Blue

Ridge Home Builders Association and

Charlottesville Area Association of

Realtors to increase community

awareness, financial and in-kind support,

and volunteer energy for this essential

work. We simply would not have reached

all 123 families in 2017 without these

faithful and passionate collaborators. ●

Vol

rs AHIP’s growth into an award-winning,

well-respected community resource

owes much to our volunteers and their

commitment to improve living conditions

for their neighbors one nail, one hammer,

and one repair at a time. Last year,

volunteers spent nearly 2,500 hours

painting, building porches and decks,

installing flooring and siding, building

wheelchair ramps, cleaning up, doing

tear-out/demolition and yard work, and

more. We are tremendously grateful

that volunteers from various student

and civic groups, houses of worship,

business teams, and professional industry

associations continue to share—and act

on—AHIP’s belief that everyone deserves

to live in a home that is safe, secure,

comfortable, and affordable. ●
