Reduce your speed to match road conditions! It is recommended to lower your speed by half on snowy roads. No matter how much experience you have, the way your truck will move on snow & ice is completely unpredictable. Do NOT follow too closely! You need to have room to move out of harm’s way in the event of a sudden emergency. Remember, stopping takes much longer on snow & ice and you will need twice the distance to stop versus normal road conditions. Monitor weather reports! Check the weather forecast for the area you will be traveling to and listen to local news/radio stations. Communicate with other truck drivers regarding road conditions or upcoming driving hazards. Prepare a Cold Weather Survival Kit to keep in your truck including the following … a shovel, a windshield scraper, flashlight with extra batteries, snack food including energy bars, disposable hand & foot warmers, extra hats, socks and mittens, first aid kit with pocket knife, any necessary medications, blankets or sleeping bag, road salt/sand/or cat litter for traction, booster cables, extra coolant/washer fluid/engine oil, flares and a whistle to attract attention. CHANGES AT DCM Lisa will now be managing the Shop, please congratulate her on her new position. With that move, we have added a new team member .. Becky Young. She will be working on marketing and recruiting, among other duties. Please stop in and introduce yourself to Becky and welcome her to the team. On another note, PLEASE check trailers when dropping them to see if they need cleaned out or swept. We are getting complaints from customers about the cleanliness of our trailers. Thank you for your help in this matter! December 2016 ACCIDENTS KNOW SAFETY! Safe Driving In Winter Conditions Complete your pre-trip inspection! Clear all snow & ice from your vehicle, lights & windows. Inspect tires, wiper blades, fluids and lights. Maintain at least a half tank of gas at all times. Refrain from using cruise control on icy or wet roads! Cruise control can be dangerous during winter months when roads are covered with moisture because it takes come control from the driver. Also, the truck’s wheels may rotate faster than the rest of the vehicle, possibly causing a collision or making the trailer slide. Hold your steering wheel firmly! Sudden, sharp moves can quickly cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Keep both hands on the wheel & stay steady through ruts in the road, heavy winds and icy roads. Driving a truck in winter conditions demands a specific set of skills. Too often drivers do not alter their driving skills in poor weather conditions, such as, snow-covered or icy roads. Good maneuvering and skid control skills are essential in bad weather. You should cut down your speed by one half in snow or icy conditions, and if you see other truckers pulling over, it is probably time you do so as well. Keeping yourself and other safe on the road is most important, so do what you need to do in order to stay safe … SAFETY ALWAYS RULES!!!
