SafeGun Handling
Children & GunsWhen it comes to children
and guns you can never be too safe. When a gun is found they should:
† Stop! Do not touch† Leave the area† Tell an adult
Know the
caliber of
your gun
Basic Rules of Safe
Gun Handling
Treat every gun as if were loaded
† You should NEVER relax when handling a gun because you THINK it is not
† Reasons:» You could be wrong, it could
be loaded» You might have forgot to
unload it» You might have forgot that
you already loaded it
Never point a gun at anything you do not intend to destroy
† This is primarily for other people. In some places it is against the law to point a weapon at someone else.
† Someone might shoot you first out of self defense
Know your target and what is behind it
† The bullet may miss or through the target and hit whatever is behind it
† Be aware of ricochets off of hard surfaces or even the flat surface of water ( bullets can skip off of water like a stone )
Keep your finger safe and off the trigger
until you are ready to fire
† You may not be thinking and squeeze the trigger accidently and harm or KILL someone without intending to
† You never want the gun to go off prematurely
Keep your gun on safe until
you in tend to fire† If the weapon is dropped, it
could cause a misfire
† Same as previous slide
Keep your gun pointed
down range† This is primarily used at a
firing range where
† Down Range = Targets
† Up Range = People
Reasons For
Handling A Gun
Self Defense† Someone breaks into your home
† Someone threatens you or your family with a weapon and intends on causing harm
† Someone tries to robe you while in your car or out in public
Practice: Firing Range† Keep your gun in a case
unloaded until you are on lane at a firing range
† Once again - handle your gun as if it where loaded
† Keep your gun pointed down range at all times
Cleaning† Be sure to clean your gun
soon after firing it
† It doesn’t hurt to clean your gun every 3 – 4 months ( or as needed )
