Safe Handling of Compr esse d Ga se s in Laboratory and Plant Before we a re allowed to drive a car, most states require proof of o u r ability to drive. T o become a proficient a n d safe driver, o n e must have skill, judgment, and driver education. We d o n o t always consider that we ar e performing a hazard- o u s operation by driving a car, ye t th e fact remains that many people a re killed o r hurt every d a ya s a result of carelessness in handling this machine. Although th e safety record of th e compressed ga s industry is excellent, th e questions raised by th e users of ga s products, an d th e accidents that these same users a re involved in , show that many of them have neither learned no r applied th e safety measures which would earn them their "compressed ga s handler's license". When handled by people who are properly trained and aware of the potential hazards, compressed gases are as safe to work with as most of the ordinary chemical liquids and .solids normally handled o n a rou tine basis in any labo ratory. Cylinder safety is ensured by th e supplier through hi s adherence to regulations se t forth by th e Interstate Commerce Commission, a n d by hi s supplying cylinders with specific valves, labels and/or markings in accordance with recognized standards. It is mandatory fo r th e supplier to ship cylinders manufactured in conformance with I.C.C. regulations a n d to follow I.C.C. regulations in th e testing a n d inspection of cylinders, th e proper filling of these cylinders, a n d th e use of safety devices which a re approved by th e Bureau of Exp1osives.l CYLINDER TESTING 1 : . . under this pressure. T he expansion of th e cylinder a nd th e Hydrostatic pressure tests a r e performed o n cylinders fo r value of permanent expansion after th e pressure is released * most'gases every five years to determine their fitness fo r a re recorded. Tolerances o n these values must b e m et in further use. During th e hydrostatic test, a cylinder is pres- order to permit further u se of th e cylinder. These values . urized with water to a value determined by th e cylinder also allow th e wall thickness of t h e cylinder an d th e degree specification a n d service pressure. T h e cylinder expands of corrosion affecting th e walls to b e estimated.'. "
