• Millions of people of different culture, age, gender, every day get in their car and drive for several kilometers to reach their destinations• Becoming a habit, driving is not anymore an action that according to people requires any daily particular mental concentration• Driving is a habit for elderly people and people with a difficult physiological condition as well• Inappropriate signs become almost non-existent in case of foggy weather conditions.

• Mobile phones, radio, GPS devices, cigarettes, newspapers and even laptops
• Too many elements influence our concentrations at driving
•Distraction on the road is nowadays considered normal, as it is human and impossible to foreseen...
• … but some distractions may have tragic consequences

• Travelling on the wrong side of a road is a a very serious phenomenon and not that uncommon as we may believe.
• Wrong way accidents are in continuos growth and cause each year a remarkable number of fatalities on the roads and highways.

In Germany each year, around 1,700 incidents of wrong-way drivers are reported in traffic information broadcasts(SourceUNICE_http://www.unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/trans/doc/2012/wp1/NatDev-2012_road-safety-programme-2011.pdf)
Wrong-way accidents are the cause of about 350 fatalities each year throughout the United States(Source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

The social costs
Italy spends from 24 up to 31 billion Euro each year, amount to around 1,5 - 2 percentage points of GDP
This number is obtained by cross-referencing the data from Ania, Ministry of Transport, Irpet e ACI
The total is the sum of the loss of productivity costs, psychological damages, financial losses, administrative costs and basic health care costs (treatment costs at the hospital).

• In the past years several information campaigns have been carried out . The sigs in highway and freeways have been increased
• In some cases in USA several kind of vertical and horizontal signalization has been added to the existing one
• This doesn’t look like being enough as the trend is not changing. The problem is that the signs have no power against a distracted driver or a psychological altered mind.
• But this is not enough..

• Now tested in Switzerland.• The system, as for the system with surveillance cameras,
sends out a signal of a situation which is already happening.• This method is only working on the effect and it is not
actively preventive

Safe- Inlet is a patented device which actively will alert driver and occupants of the vehicle travelling in the wrong way

SAFE INLET is installed on the road surface at the end and across all the exit lanes of each highway and parking area; it is not perceived at all by vehicles travelling in the correct way

If it is traversed by a vehicle travelling in the correct way, the system has a neutral behavior, it doesn’t represent a bump for the vehicle and it is not perceived at all by the driver and the other occupants.
In case of wrong entering, the system act as a bump giving a shock to the vehicle which will alert all its occupants as an unmistakable signal telling that they are doing something wrong.

• At the moment the system has got 2 patents: one is in a PCT phase patent ant the other is in the Italian national phase. The Patenting phase is a work in progress.

• The project has been shown and analyzed by an important Italian University, which confirmed its feasibility.
• The first prototype have been built and tested on the road• Now the next step is the realization of the executive project of the two
patents.

• In the current phase of the project the materials and processes needed to manufacture the product are not yet determined , therefore the total costs can not be calculated with precision .
• We have put in place a well-grounded Businnes Plan, together with the Economic and Financial prospect, based on the experience in the construction of the first prototypes.

We strongly believe in this project and its wide spread as it will represent a considerable and rather economical help to drastically decrease the numbers of accidents which are at the moment out of control.
We have some way to go. However the huge number of endorsements and positive comments received during the last few months have strengthened our enthusiasm for the future development of the project.
