Bardon Contracting has set itself strong goals for safety and sustainability which we canonly achieve by driving improvements throughout our business, and with the fullco-operation of our supply chain and clients. We have done this because every employeewithin our business believes that we can achieve these goals, and that anything less wouldbe unacceptable.

Safety

Throughout our business we haveestablished a deeply embedded safetyculture, focusing on the single ideathat no-one’s health should be put atrisk by what we do.

We have detailed procedures in placefor communicating safe practice andpotential risks, including a ‘Near HitHotline’ which employees can call 24hours a day to report any potentialincidents which occurred on their sites.

All incidents and significant near hitsresult in a ‘Safety Pause’. This involvesthe entire business stopping work andlistening (by phone conference) to alive briefing by our Managing Director. This briefing explains the event, itsimplications to the wider business andwhat steps can be taken to mitigatethe risk of reoccurrence.

The senior management team, alongsideexternal specialists, also deliver regionalannual safety road shows. Theseinvolve a full day of presentations toevery employee covering our safetyperformance for the previous year andhow we can improve as a business.

We regularly revise our PPE provisionbased on our understanding of therisks within our operations. For example, during 2005 our incident analysisidentified a trend of upper foot injuries. To prevent these we replaced all safetyboots in the business with bootsfeaturing specific metatarsal protection. This action almost completelyeliminated upper foot injuries. Afterdiscussion with our operatives wehave since introduced a modifiedboot which provides improved flexibility.

Sustainability

Bardon Contracting, as part ofAggregate Industries, has sustainabilityat the core of its business strategy andhas developed a wide range ofapproaches to sustainable construction. These include:

• The material production methodsused by Bardon CompositePavements (who regularly use site won and reclaimed materials)

• Our use of state of the artmachinery to maximise energyefficiency with minimal emissions

• Throughout our business wemeasure emissions, energy usage

and waste as part of our keyperformance indicators. This hasalso been adopted by some of ourkey supply chain partners, enablingfurther savings

• The use of mobile asphalt recyclingplants to recycle existing asphaltsurfacing into a new base andbinder course for footways andminor highways.

We always take a responsibleapproach to the consumption ofresources, and Aggregate Industrieshas been awarded BRE BES 6001 andcertified as a responsible source.

Our position as a contractor andmanufacturer enables us to considerthe impact of our projects in terms ofthe whole life of the products used, from initial quarrying right throughinstallation and beyond.

Every project we undertake isthoroughly assessed for its short andlong term environmental impact. Thisallows us to put in place controls whichnot only protect the environment now,but also protect future generations.

Our scheme on the A38 in Glynn Valley was awarded the ‘Golden Apple’ by theGreen Organisation, as well as the ‘Sustain’ award in the category for ‘Property andthe Built Environment’ from Sustain Magazine. Both of these awards recognised ourwork towards minimising the environmental risks posed by the project and theinnovative solutions we provided based on our detailed consideration of the finalpost-completion habitat.

Bardon Contracting fosters innovative thinking throughout our business, using theknowledge and skill of our employees to help create innovative solutions to problems inthe industry, at the same time as finding ways to improve the long term quality andsustainability of our projects.

We accomplish this through a number of means; some which focus on developing newproducts through technical research, and others which seek simply to tap into the wealthof experience and understanding contained within our skilled employees.

Researching Success

Our dedicated research anddevelopment team, made up fromacademics, engineers and techniciansfrom a number of countries, regularlyprovides the business with innovationin both the processes and technologyused in our projects as well as theproducts we use in constructing them.

Based out of our research laboratoryat Hulland Ward, this ‘centre ofexcellence’ is devoted to researchingall aspects of asphalt, concrete andrecycling within our industry. Thesedevelopments are approved andverified in partnership with othercentres of excellence such as theWaste Resources Action Programme(WRAP), Scott Wilson PavementEngineering (SWPE), NottinghamUniversity and the University of Ulster.

Superflex Asphalt

With a single-layer thickness of up to100mm, this product can eliminate theneed for separate binder and surfacecourses. This saves time and alsopaving machine fuel consumption byup to 50%. The material also provideswhole life savings through its increaseddurability; to support this we offer a tenyear guarantee on the texture (SCRIM)of the final surface.

Asphalt produced at lower temperatures*

By using a number of technologies wehave developed a superbly versatilenew asphalt. This product not onlysubstantially reduces the amount ofCO² produced in its manufacture, butalso emits almost no fumes, makinglaying the material significantly easierand ensuring no inconvenience to thelocal community or our employees.

Innovation through design

By involving Bardon Contracting in aproject at the design stage, a clientcan benefit from the extensivespecialist knowledge each member ofour commercial team possesses, aswell as gain access to the additionaltechnical managers from each of ourassociated businesses in concrete, asphalt, aggregates, building materialsand precast structural products.

By advising on all aspects of theconstruction, we are able to help ourclients achieve their long term goals for the project; such as increasedsustainability through the use ofrecycled materials, or whole lifequality through the use of longerlasting materials.

Our involvement gives a client accessto the full supply chain through onecontact, which simplifies the wholeprocess whilst still providing significantbest value in the project.
