Biohazardous Materials• Do not remove plates etc from lab• Waste plates • Waste non disposals• Spills• Nothing Goes Down The SINK

Unprocessed• Disinfect work area• Spill cleanup• Wash hands before leaving

Chemical Preparation• Check MSDS for proper handling• Labeling and storage• PPE• Order needed• Safe Disposal

Disposal• Glassware• Broken glass• Autoclaving• Hazardous wastes

Glassware• Rinse and ensure glassware is

immersed in water in bucket in washup area

• When necessary do a load in dishwasher

• Return to appropriate shelf etc

Broken Glass• Not contaminated with biohazard

in glass breakage containers• Biohazard contaminated: yellow

sharps containers• Leave note on white board in

S365C if broken glassware

Autoclaving• Waste biohazards• Liquids

– Use slow exhaust• Wrapped

Before Leaving After Every Session

• Clean any areas that have been used (balances, counter, fumehood)

• Glassware is put in washup area• Turn off gas• Turn off deionized water• Turn off lights• Turn off autoclave• Lock door

Working Alone• If at all possible avoid it• A risk assessment of your work must be done

with your supervisor to determine what can be done with minimum supervision

• Higher risk procedures should not be done when alone (working with hazardous materials, risk of fire)

What is WHMIS• Workplace Hazardous Materials

Information System• Provides information about hazardous

materials used in the workplace• Workers have the right to receive

information about each controlled product they use

• Goal of WHMIS is to reduce injury and disease.
