• General Rules Lab Coat Footwear Handwashing No Eating in Lab Area Personal Belongings Fire Procedure Injuries Emergency Number

Page 3: Safe Working Practices for Honours, Directed Studies Students

Biohazardous Materials• Do not remove plates etc from lab• Waste plates • Waste non disposals• Spills• Nothing Goes Down The SINK

Unprocessed• Disinfect work area• Spill cleanup• Wash hands before leaving

Page 4: Safe Working Practices for Honours, Directed Studies Students

Chemical Preparation• Check MSDS for proper handling• Labeling and storage• PPE• Order needed• Safe Disposal

Page 5: Safe Working Practices for Honours, Directed Studies Students

Disposal• Glassware• Broken glass• Autoclaving• Hazardous wastes

Page 6: Safe Working Practices for Honours, Directed Studies Students

Glassware• Rinse and ensure glassware is

immersed in water in bucket in washup area

• When necessary do a load in dishwasher

• Return to appropriate shelf etc

Page 7: Safe Working Practices for Honours, Directed Studies Students

Broken Glass• Not contaminated with biohazard

in glass breakage containers• Biohazard contaminated: yellow

sharps containers• Leave note on white board in

S365C if broken glassware

Page 8: Safe Working Practices for Honours, Directed Studies Students

Autoclaving• Waste biohazards• Liquids

– Use slow exhaust• Wrapped

– Allow for drying cycle• Autoclave tape• Check with others before starting

(particularly Carolynne)

Page 9: Safe Working Practices for Honours, Directed Studies Students

Hazardous Waste• Container

– Appropriate size• Labeling

Before Leaving After Every Session

• Clean any areas that have been used (balances, counter, fumehood)

• Glassware is put in washup area• Turn off gas• Turn off deionized water• Turn off lights• Turn off autoclave• Lock door

Working Alone• If at all possible avoid it• A risk assessment of your work must be done

with your supervisor to determine what can be done with minimum supervision

• Higher risk procedures should not be done when alone (working with hazardous materials, risk of fire)

Working Alone • The Faculty of Science will be

striking a multidiscipline committee to develop working alone guidelines for the Faculty of Science

• Have some type of checkin procedure

WHMIS

Page 15: Safe Working Practices for Honours, Directed Studies Students

What is WHMIS• Workplace Hazardous Materials

Information System• Provides information about hazardous

materials used in the workplace• Workers have the right to receive

information about each controlled product they use

• Goal of WHMIS is to reduce injury and disease.
