1912 Midland Metal Spinners was founded by George Cadman, who was then 65 years old, as a metal holloware manufacturing company, in St. Mark’s Street, Wolverhampton. They later moved into the Tower and Fort Works in Pelham Street, which ultimately gave rise to the famous Tower brand name.

1937 Tower exhibited some of their latest holloware designs at the British Industries Fair. As you can see from the original poster, their stand No. A410 must have been a great sight as it promoted their “Beautiful, inexpensive, untarnishable Plate, at prices all can afford to pay”.

1961 Tower became one of the largest manufacturers of aluminium holloware, electric kettles, tea pots and other household articles with over 1,000 employees.

1974 Russell Hobbs took ownership of the expanding Tower brand.

• Do not immerse cords, plugs or any part of the appliance in water or any other liquid.

• Do not use the appliance outdoors.

• Caution: During cooking ensure you open the Pie Maker slowly and carefully. Excess pie filling may overflow the mould and can scald.

• Do not overfill the pie mould or use fillings with excess liquid ingredients. This can result in an overflow of filling. The pie filling will be hot and can scald.

• Do not place the Pie Maker on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in or near a heated oven.

• The Pie Maker must be placed on a heat-resistant surface.

• Never attempt to lift or move the Pie Maker during use.

• Do not touch the hot surfaces and let the Pie Maker cool completely before cleaning.

• Wear oven gloves when removing the pie from the Pie Maker.

• Use caution when placing the pastry into the pie mould. The surfaces and cooking plates of the appliance will be hot.

• Warning: Filling will be very hot after cooking. Be careful when eating hot pies, particularly those with fillings such as tomato, jam or cheese as these retain heat and can burn,

3USINGYOURAPPLIANCE

Beforefirstuse:

• Carefully unpack the Pie Maker. Remove all packaging materials.

• Place the appliance on a flat, level surface. Open the Pie Maker Lid.

• Wipe the cooking plates with a damp cloth so that they are clean.

• Note: Use a small amount of cooking oil to season the cooking plates, and wipe off any excess with a dry cloth. This only needs to be done once.

• Wipe the outside of the housing with a soft damp cloth. NEVER immerse the power cord and plug in water or any other liquid.

• Close the appliance.

• Plug into the wall outlet and pre-heat for 10 minutes.

• Note: During this initial phase some smoke may be emitted from the Pie Maker. This is normal.

Usingyourappliance:

1. Place the Pie Maker onto a dry, level surface.

2. Close the cover and plug in.

3. A red light will turn on, signifying that the appliance is now pre-heating.

4. In approximately 3-8 minutes the green light will show, to indicate that the appliance is pre-heated and ready for use.

5. Throughout the cooking process the green light will flash on and off indicating that the correct cooking temperature is being maintained.

6. Ensure that the lid is always kept closed during the preheating and cooking process.

Pies&Tarts:

1. If making pies and tarts use the Reversible Pie Cutter to make the moulds. The larger side is for the pie bottom, and the smaller for the pie top. The slits in the mould bottom allow you to overlap the dough for a better fit in the mould.

2. Unless the recipe states otherwise we recommend using Puff Pastry dough for the tops, and standard pie dough for the bottom. If using store bought dough you can find Puff Pastry dough in the freezer section of your supermarket. Pie dough is usually found in the refrigerated section with muffins and cookies. Note: Make sure the pastry used is less than 5mm thick to ensure even cooking.

3. Open the Pie Maker and place the large bottom dough over the Pie Mould. Add your fillings according to the recipe instructions and the weight of the fillings will cause the dough to drop down into the mould. You can also use the bottom of a ladle to gently press the dough into the mould being careful not to tear the dough.

4. WARNING! Surfaces are hot. Never touch the cooking surface directly with your fingers

5. If your recipe calls for a top, place the moulded dough top over the filled mould and close the cover. Press the locking latch in until you hear a click indicating that it is locked.

6. Set a timer for the specified time as indicated in your recipe. You will notice the green ready light will cycle on and off during the cooking process indicating that the correct temperature is being maintained.

7. When the cooking time is complete unplug the Pie Maker from the wall outlet. Pull the Locking latch up from the bottom and carefully lift the lid. If you need additional browning simply close the lid and set the timer to the desired time.

8. Carefully remove the pie from the mould by using a nylon or wooden spatula. Do not use metal utensils to avoid damaging the non-stick surface.

Usingthepastrycutter:

The pastry cutter is designed to create the perfect sized pastry for your Pie Maker.

Once your pastry is made, dust it with flour to prevent sticking.

The pastry cutter cuts both the base and top for the pie.

1. Use the smaller end for the pie top and the larger end for the pie base.

2. Using the larger end first, press the pastry cutter into the pastry to make the base for the pie. Avoid twisting the pastry cutter as this can tear the pastry.

3. Then use the smaller end to cut the pie top out.

4. Place the pastry base into the pie mould, carefully pushing down so it fits.

5. Add your fillings, making sure to fill the pies no more than ¾ full, and then add the pastry tops before closing the lid.

Defrosting/ReheatingPies:

• Defrost frozen pies at room temperature for around 1 hour, or 5 minutes on the defrost setting of your microwave.

• To reheat pies, preheat the Pie Maker for 5 minutes.

• Heat frozen pies for approximately 30 – 40 minutes.

• Heat thawed pies for approximately 15 – 18 minutes.

• Always check that pies are defrosted fully and thoroughly cooked before eating.

Tips:

• It is recommended to wipe some olive or vegetable oil onto the cooking surfaces before using the Pie Maker. This helps to brown the bottom crust well, and also makes it easier to remove the pie after cooking.

• Ensure that your pie mould contains a sufficient amount of filling. If too little filling, the top of the pie will not contact the heating plate and will not brown as well. Too much filling and your pie could overflow during the cooking process and prevent the top and bottom to seal. As a general rule, pastry fillings for pies should be ¾ full.

• Do not use raw fruit fillings or proteins for pies. Since most pies in your Pie Maker are completed within 20 – 30 minutes this is not sufficient time to cook fillings. Always precook ingredients before adding to the pie mould. You can find pre-made pie fillings in the canned fruit section of your local supermarket, or see the recipe section of this manual to make your own!

Pastrytips:

For pre-made pie crust unroll onto a piece of parchment paper. Using the large side of the pastry cutter, make the bottom as close to the edge of the pie crust as possible. Take the remaining section and reposition the dough to make a second mould. Press the dough down slightly with your fingers to join the pieces.

You can store unused moulded pie crust in the freezer by simply adding parchment paper in-between layers and storing in a plastic freezer bag. Remove excess air from bag before freezing.

Always keep flour on hand to apply to the pastry in case it begins to stick.

Storebought:

For best results frozen pastry should be used as soon as it has thawed.

Do not use pie dough for pie tops. We recommend using puff pastry dough for pie tops. You can find Puff Pastry sheets in the freezer section of your local supermarket.

Pre made pie dough can be found in the refrigerated section of your supermarket, usually where the refrigerated cookie dough and biscuits are located.

Home-made:

For best results wrap homemade pastry in cling film and store in the fridge for half an hour prior to using.

Roll home-made pastry in between two bits of cling film to stop it from sticking.

If you wish to use home-made pastry for your pie, this can be prepared up to one day in advance and then chilled.

Do not knead and form the pastry for more than 15 minutes at any one time. After 15 minutes of kneading, wrap the pastry in cling film and allow it cool in the fridge before using again.

Pat your pastry into the shape you want to roll it into before chilling it, so that is rolls easier.

Cold hands are the best for pastry making. If your hands are becoming warm whilst you’re handling the pastry, run them under cold water quickly before continuing.

Recipes

HomemadeShortCrustPastry Ingredients

170g flour

pinch of salt

85g butter (cubed)

3 tbsp. cold water

Method

1. Sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Add the butter and using your hands, rub the flour and butter together.

2. Add the water and work the dough with your hands. Gently pack it together.

3. Wrap the pastry in cling film and leave it in the fridge for half an hour before use, or overnight

Variations: For herbed savoury short crust, try adding 1 tbsp. of finely chopped herbs or 1 tsp. of dried herbs to your flour. For spiced short crust, add 1 tsp. of ground spice to the flour (such as cinnamon or ginger).

Makingyourowncherrypiefilling Ingredients

700g frozen cherries, thawed

4 tbsp. cornflower

1 large cooking apple, grated

2 shots of apple juice

Method

1. Using a strainer, squeeze as much of the liquid out of the cherries as possible.

2. Mix the cherries, grated apple and cornflower into a bowl. Grated cooking apple and cornflower help to stop a pie from going soggy.

3. Prepare your pastry and place into the Pie Maker.

4. Before adding the filling, give it one last squeeze to ensure there’s no excess liquid, then fill the pie 2/3 full.

5. Cook for around 25 – 30 minutes in the Pie Maker, or until golden brown.

Makingyourownapplepiefilling Ingredients

1.5kg granny smith apples

150g caster sugar

a handful of blueberries

1 tsp. cinnamon

A handful of caster sugar

Pinch of nutmeg

Method

1. Once you have used the pastry cutter to cut out the pie base and top for your pie, peel and dice all the apples. Note: Peeling and dicing the apples at last minute is best, as this stops them from going brown.

2. Throw the diced apples, blueberries, cinnamon, nutmeg and apple juice into a bowl and mix.

3. Cook the pie filling in a pan over medium heat for around 10 minutes, stirring as it cooks.

4. Put the pastry base into the Pie Maker and fill it with the apple pie filling.

5. Fit the lid on the pie and brush with egg white. Sprinkle with the remaining caster sugar and cook for around 25 – 30 minutes in the Pie Maker, or until golden brown.

Tip: try mixing eating apples with brambly apples for variations in flavour and texture.

7. Toffee Apple Pie: To make a toffee apple pie filling, simply remove the blueberries from this recipe and add toffees on top of the apple pie filling, before adding the pie top.

8. Elderflower, Blackberry and Apple pie: Replace the apple juice with elderflower press and substitute blueberries for blackberries.

Egg-Wash Crack one egg into a bowl and beat using a fork. Take a pastry brush and brush the pie top with the egg wash. The helps to glaze the pie crust, and make it crisp and brown.

Makingyourownpumpkinpiefilling Ingredients

Vegetable oil

1.4kg pumpkin

50g unsalted butter

125g golden caster sugar

4 tbsp. plain four

¼ tsp. ground nutmeg

Ground cinnamon

2 tsp. vanilla extract

2 large free- range eggs

Method

1. Preheat your oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Grease a non-stick pan with vegetable oil.

2. Prepare the pumpkin by halving it and scooping out and discarding the seeds.

3. Cut the pumpkin into quarters and put onto the pan. Cover with foil and put into the oven for around an hour.

4. Remove the tray from the oven and allow the pumpkin to cool in the tray.

5. Take the cooled pumpkin pieces and scoop out the flesh, and put it into a food processor.

6. Cook 50g of butter on a low heat until it’s golden brown. Add to the pumpkin and blitz until smooth.

7. Add the sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, flour and nutmeg to the blitzed mixture.

8. Break the two eggs into a separate bowl and whisk them before adding to the mixture.

9. Blitz the mixture again until smooth.

10. Pour the pumpkin mixture into the pastry base and add the pastry lid. Egg wash the pie top before cooking in your Pie Maker for around 25 – 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

SteakandAlePie Ingredients

1 kg braising steak, stripped of fatty pieces and cut into chunks.

200g chopped carrot

200g sliced red onion.

200g mushrooms

¼ pint of ale

4 sprigs of rosemary

1 heaped tsp. flour

1 heaped tsp. pepper

2 tbsp. olive oil

1 heaped tsp. tomato puree

Method

1. Add the pepper to the chopped meat. Pour the olive oil over the meat and add a pinch of salt and massage it into the meat.

2. Put two pans onto the hob at a high heat.

3. Brown the meat in a hot pan.

4. Chop the sprigs of rosemary and add to the second pan, in the oil. Add the chopped carrot and red onion.

5. Add ¼ of a pint of ale to the pan with the meat in. Stir and add the flour.

6. Stirring again, add 1 heaped tbsp. of tomato puree.

7. Move the cooked vegetables to the pan with meat in and cover with a pint of water. Add the chopped mushrooms.

8. Turn down the heat and cover the pan with a lid. Leave to cook for around an hour, before adding to your pastry in the Pie Maker.

9. Cook for around 25 – 30 minutes in the Pie Maker, or until golden brown.

10. Variations: You may want to add 2 cloves of crushed garlic and ½ tsp of chilli powder as your vegetables cook for an extra punch of flavour.

4TROUBLESHOOTING&FAQ’S

Questions Answers

Can I use raw meat in the Pie Maker?

No. All meat needs to pre-cooked. The cooking time is not long enough for raw meat to be cooked.

How can I remove my pie without it breaking?

Allow the pie to cool slightly. Carefully use a non-metallic spatula to ease around the sides and bottom of the pie and then gently remove the pie. For extra help, add olive oil to the pie mould before cooking.

What is the best pastry to use in my Pie Maker?

We recommend using puff pastry for the lid of your pie and short crust pastry for the base.

Can I put raw filling in my Pie Maker?

No. It’s best to cook all vegetables, fruit and meat before using them as filling as the time to cook the outer pastry of the pie is not long enough to cook the inner ingredients.

Can I make pies without a lid?

Yes you can make lidless pies and tarts in the Pie Maker. When making a pie without a lid, ensure your pie mould is not overfilled with filling. Extra wet ingredients like gravy can overflow and damage the cooking plate. Using dryer ingredients is best.

What kind of pies can I make in my Tower Family Pie Maker?

The possibilities are endless with your Tower Family Pie Maker. From vegetable, chicken, steak and fruit pies and tarts, you can mix and match whatever ingredients you please. We recommend using leftovers form your roast dinner to create a tasty pie with a difference,Just make sure all your ingredients are pre-cooked and then you’re ready to go!

Why is my pie cooking unevenly?

You may have rolled your pastry too thick. Ensure it is 5mm or less.Always allow your Tower Family Pie Maker pre-heating time before using. Wait until the green light is cycling on and off before adding your pastry and filling.

Why is my pastry soggy?

You may be using too much of a liquid ingredient. Liquid ingredients like gravy, custard or sauces can overflow and make the pastry soggy if you use too much of them on their own. Always leave your pie to cook in the Pie Maker until it is golden brown.

Why is my pie taking longer than usual to cook?

The thicker the pastry, the longer the pie will take to cook. Thin out the pastry for a quicker cooking time.

What size pie does this make?

You can make 9 inch pies using this Pie Maker.

Can I store cooked pies?

Yes. You can keep homemade pies in the fried for 3-4 days after cooking. Allow to cool before storing in an air tight container. You can even use your Tower Pie Maker to reheat them when you’re ready.

5CLEANING&CARE

Caution: Do not immerse the appliance, cord or plug in water.

Not dishwasher safe,

Before cleaning the Pie Maker, unplug power cord from the wall outlet and allow to completely cool. In order to prevent food residue build-up clean your Pie Maker after each use.

Wipe the inside and the wells of your Pie Maker with a clean, soapy sponge or cloth.

Remove soapy residue with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly.

To remove stubborn stains use a nylon brush or other utensil safe for non-stick surfaces.

Do not use steel wool or scouring pads. Do not use abrasive cleansers.

Wipe the exterior with a clean, damp cloth.

Clean the pastry cutter in warm soapy water, do not place the pastry cutter in the dishwasher.

IMPORTANT! Allow to dry fully after cleaning before using again.

Do not use the appliance if damp. Ensure the appliance is completely clean and dry before storing.

Storage

Unplug power cord from the power outlet and clean as above.

Allow the appliance to dry fully.

Store on a flat, dry level surface out of reach of children.

IMPORTANT

As the colours in the mains lead of this appliance may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your plug, please proceed as follows:

The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:

Blue neutral [N] Brown live [L] Green/Yellow [EARTH]

Plug Fitting Details (Where Applicable). The wire coloured blue is the neutral and must be connected to the terminal marked [N] or coloured black.

The wire coloured brown is the live wire and must be connected to the terminal marked [L] or coloured red.

The wire coloured green/yellow must be connected to the terminal marked with the letter [E] or marked .

On no account must either the brown or the blue wire be connected to the [EARTH] terminal .

Always ensure that the cord grip is fastened correctly.

The plug must be fitted with a fuse of the same rating already fitted and conforming to BS 1362 and be ASTA approved.

If in doubt consult a qualified electrician who will be pleased to do this for you.

Non-Rewireable Mains Plug If your appliance is supplied with a non-rewireable plug fitted to the mains lead and should the fuse need replacing, you must use an ASTA approved one (conforming to BS 1362 of the same rating).
