Developing Safe Habits
ACCIDENT: any event that was not intended to happen. Every hour, at least 1 person between 10-19 is
killed due to an accident.
ACCIDENTAL INJURIES: injuries that result from an accident Ex. Fall on ice and break your arm.
ACCIDENT CHAIN: series of events that include a situation, an unsafe habit, and an unsafe action. To avoid injuries:
Focus on what you are doing
Know your limits
Plan ahead
Example of an Accident Chain
1.) The situation: Karla arrives home from school & rushes to answer the
phone.
2.) Unsafe Habit: Karla often leaves her things scattered on the floor in her
room.
3.) Unsafe Action: After talking on the phone, Karla goes to get ready for her
soccer game and trips over a pile of belongings on the floor.
4.) Accident & Injury: Karla falls and hurts her ankle. Now she can’t play in her
soccer game.
Put these in the correct order according to the
accident chain Jason often texts when he is driving.
Jason gets into a car accident and breaks his foot.
Jason is in a hurry to drive to his basketball game.
Jason texts his friend Mike as he is driving on the highway and doesn’t see the stop sign.
Think of an accident chain that involves the word written on the
notecard. Write both your names at the top of the paper. Also, write down the word/phrase that is on your notecard.

Safety at Home Most common type of home injury involves
falls.
Others include poisonings, electrical shocks, guns and fires.
Many can be prevented.
Prevention Wipe up spills and use nonskid rugs.
Keep clutter off the floor
Store cleaning products and other poisonous materials out of reach of young kids.
Replace broken electrical cords
Never use electrical appliances near water.
Store guns properly & handle them as if they are loaded.
Fire Prevention Fires need 3 elements:
Fuel, heat, air
Keep stoves/ovens clean
Keep flammable items away from heat sources
Never leave cigarettes on furniture
Inspect electrical wires and outlets
Store matches and lighters properly
Install smoke alarms on every level of the house.
FIRE! Leave house immediately
Stay close to the floor
Keep your mouth and nose covered
Feel all doors before opening
Stop, drop and roll
Call fire department
Safety at School Follow the rules

Report weapons or unsafe activities Bullying
Wear safety gear when appropriate Sports
