Keel Boats & Trailables Message from the Tower. We are very pleased to announce that we now have a hooter in the tower, which can be heard out on the water. Please refer to SI for starting procedures – lights and sounds. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, as a consideration to the race control people in the tower please observe radio silence 10 mins before the start time, it can be very distracting. Welcome back Mark and Di, who will start sailing with us again Friday. Note: The latest keel boat courses are on the club website. In Pursuit Looking back at Friday’s Keel Boat Race

Friday the 28th was the race best Friday night race so far. Two good reaches to start the race in 10 to 15 knots of wind. Long enough to give everyone a drink and something to eat, then a good old fashion beat home. We were a bit far behind to see how the racing was playing out at the front, however Lady Cassandra with her 2nd win in 3 weeks must be have having a "dog" going well good time.

Guys, How could you let a 70 year old, 26 foot 6 inch wooden fishing boat beat you?? Lol

In Pursuit Con’t Calamity Amity & her Friday night pursuits (The trials and tribulations of two fifty something’s learning to sail.) I’ve just perused Friday night’s results & there she is again: Amity DNF. The shame! We DID finish, we just obviously didn’t know HOW to! It’s almost 12 months since we collected our beloved Hanse 385 from Sydney, & sailed her from Pittwater NSW to Victoria (which people told us we were very brave doing, as we’re novices!) but this racing/pursuit business is MUCH more difficult. I guess it doesn’t help that there are only two of us & we have no ‘crew’ (God bless electric winches and a self tacker!). I’m ashamed to say that our modus operandi when attempting a race is to just ‘follow’ everyone else. Now this would be fine, as you can learn a lot from what others do, IF we could keep up. Husband has a multitude of books on sail trim, but theory & practice are poles apart, aren’t they? And after some difficulties getting out of our berth at the marina (don’t ask!) We were running behind, so crossed the start line well behind all the other girls our size. So glorious it is out there, isn’t it? However when every man and his dog has surged ahead, it’s impossible to tell exactly how everyone is finishing & attempt to do the same thing ourselves. Obviously we got it wrong, again! Of course it would help if we tried to learn the various courses ourselves but first things first, I say, (learning to actually ‘sail’ must take priority!) Yes, we obviously need some serious help! Last season we roped in the lovely Pauline Cleaver to be ‘Lady Skipper’ for us one Sunday & what a buzz it was to be keeping pace with Mr Bojangles at one point! So it’s obviously it’s US that are the problem and NOT the mighty Amity. Fortunately Renaissance and Tango are keeping the Hanses from total shame at SBSC. One day we might be ‘competitive’. but we don’t really mind. A few weeks ago some

fellow said, as we were walking past, “Don’t worry, we were like that too when we started” (whatever could he mean? are we the laughing stock of Martha Cove??!!) At least when you’re always last (very very very last!) everyone else has tied up and gone off to dinner, so we don’t have to do the walk/motor of shame back to our berth. (And no, it’s not because we’re embarrassed at our failures that we don’t come to dinner at the club too - we care for two elderly parents who are always clamouring to be fed post race!) But although our efforts to sail our beloved Amity in a competitive fashion are yet to bear fruit, it’s not about the winning (or in our case just keeping up with the pack!) but the joy of being out there on the ocean on our beautiful girl Amity.& it’s still a wonderful sight all those white sails - even if, in our case, they are always disappearing into the distance! See you next Friday (we’ll be the ones in the lovely Hanse 385 - coming last and crossing the finish line incorrectly!)

- Susan, 385 Amity

On an uneven Keel Looking back at Sunday’s Keel Boat Race

Sunday was always looking a bit sketchy with no wind predicted. We were lucky in the end to have a good breeze for the first two legs with a beat out to 25 then a spinnaker run to R1. R1 to home started as a one legged beat

Page 4: Safety Beach Sailing Club E-Newslettersbsc.net.au/wp-content/uploads/sbsc/December-3rd-2014-e-news1.pdf · our Secretary Jacquie last week. We are such a rural club! ... Mark and

back to the yellow mark; however ended up being a drift off with next to no wind. Luckily the sea breeze finally hit the water at 3.45pm to enable everyone still out there to come home in a solid breeze.

Red & Green Dawn Breakers Looking back at Sunday’s Red & Green Fleet.

It was light but there was some wind available for a degree of forward motion, most of the time. Both fleets were straight out to the course for a few races. Greens did very well distinguishing their division flag & gave the Red’s plenty of space at the start line as they were instructed. Good starts for both races! Really parents, you’ve got to get out to the course somehow, they are all truly brilliant, an absolute pleasure to watch & listen to them getting around. It’s a genuinely great sport. The final race between the Red Fleet was fantastic to watch. Nick in his Contender at the top mark was well behind the three Lazers & he fought a great battle to claim each place to win in the end. Also well done to Patrick, he was not that far behind the main fleet & was looking especially strong. Watch out he’s got very little weight & skills that refining every race, the competition should be worried.

View from the back of the race Looking back at Sunday’s OTB Race

Oh boy! The race that never happened this week! It was so beautiful out there, the water was crystal clear all the way to the bottom but there wasn’t a breath of wind! I won the ‘Who can stay out & float for the longest’ award & if swimming beside your boat was a comp I won that too! However Luke M was champion at ‘Pushing Pacers Over’. He flipped it more than a dozen times. Tom was the ‘Quickest On & Quickest Off Champ’. Gordon from Sandringham was the ‘Bungless Champion’, his Lazer was drained & back in a flash. After the race was cancelled Bianca won the ‘Rescued only to be Capsized’ right

before the wind came in. Of which was really only thoroughly enjoyed by the A Class boys who hit the water till the sun went down.

Bic Open Worlds 2015

Now for some really exciting news

SBSC is putting in a bid to host the Bic Open Worlds to be held Christmas/New year 2015. We have a very strong chance of getting it. This will be an enormous & exciting event for the club to host. If successful we will need a subcommittee & everyone’s help to plan for it. Whilst the Bic’s are a new class, they are an Olympic class & this week long event will put our club on the world stage. One thing our members need to know in preparation for this event is: All competitors wishing to enter into a World event must have previously competed in a National event (in any class). Therefore we would suggest that anyone interested in competing look at entering any of these ASAP: 28/12/14 - SYC Mirror National Champs 06/01/15 - SSCBC Moth Worlds 11/01/15 – WA Minnow National Champs 18/01/15 - SYC Australian O'pen Cup

Collection for those on Duty Honesty Tin at the sign on desk

Well that was a complete failure. We’ll have to think of something else to reward our duty people for their hard work. If you have any idea’s please reply back to E-News. The person that put a $1 in the tin is welcome to collect it, thank you.

Congratulations Grainne In competing in the Cheerleading Nationals in QLD last week. Her team got 3rd & 5th. Well done!
