Buying guide Health and Safety LegislationEN ISO 20345:2011 specifies basic and additional requirements for safety footwear. If a shoe conforms, it will be found within the product information label in the footwear. SB - Safety basic 200 joule toecap protection and oil resistant is the standard requirement met, however in addition, slip resistant ratings that meet other standards will vary in a range of workplace hazards, these are shown below:

• SB - Safety basic 200 joule toecap protection and oil resistant.

• S1 - 200 joule toecap protection, closed heel, oil resistant, anti-static, energy absorbing heel area.

• S1P - 200 joule toecap protection, closed heel, oil resistant, anti-static, energy absorbing heel area, pierce resistant midsole.

• S2 - 200 joule toecap protection, closed heel, oil resistant, anti-static, energy absorbing heel area, water resistant upper.

• S3 - 200 joule toecap protection, closed heel, oil resistant, anti-static, energy absorbing heel area, water resistant upper, plus pierce resistant midsole, cleated out-sole (tread).

• S4 - 200 joule toecap protection, all rubber or all polymeric footwear, oil resistant, anti-static, energy absorbing heel area.

• S5 - 200 joule toecap protection, all rubber or all polymeric footwear, oil resistant, anti-static, energy absorbing heel area, plus pierce resistant midsole, cleated out-sole (tread).

• HRO - Sole resistant to 300ºC.

Meanings: • Antistatic - Preventing the build-up of static

electricity or reducing its effects.

• SRA - Tested on ceramic tile wetted with diluted soap solution.

• SRB - Tested on smooth steel with glycerol.

• SRC - Tested under both the above conditions.

Slip resistance testing will only grow in importance as consumers become more quality conscious. With new styles of footwear undergoing intermittent re-testing, the reputable EN ISO 13287 has advanced SRA, SRB and SRC ratings which are now commonly used.
