SCANNER UNIT

Mounting Considerations,Precautions

• The scanner unit is generally installed ei-ther on top of the wheelhouse or on the ra-dar mast on a suitable platform. Locate thescanner unit where there is a good all-roundview. Any obstruction will cause shadowand blind sectors. A mast for instance, witha diameter considerably less than the widthof the radiator, will cause only a small blindsector, but a horizontal spreader orcrosstrees in the same horizontal plane asthe scanner unit would be a much moreserious obstruction; you would need toplace the scanner unit well above or belowit.

• It is rarely possible to place the scanner unitwhere a completely clear view in all direc-tions is available. Thus, you should deter-mine the angular width and relative bearingof any shadow sectors for their influenceon the radar at the first opportunity afterfitting.

• If you have a radio direction finder on yourboat, locate its scanner clear of the scan-ner unit to prevent interference to the di-rection finder. A separation of more thantwo meters is recommended.

• To lessen the chance of picking up electri-cal interference, avoid where possible rout-ing the signal cable near other onboardelectrical equipment. Also avoid runningthe cable in parallel with power cables.

• A magnetic compass will be affected ifplaced too close to the scanner unit. Ob-serve the following compass safe distancesto prevent deviation of a magnetic com-pass: Standard compass, 1.00 m, Steeringcompass, 0.75 m.

• Do not paint the radiator aperture, to en-sure proper emission of the radar waves.

• When this radar is to be installed on largervessels, consider the following points:

• The signal cable run between the scan-ner and the display comes in lengths of10 m (standard), 15 m, 20 m and 30 m.Whatever length is used it must be un-broken; namely, no splicing allowed.

• Deposits and fumes from a funnel orother exhaust vent can adversely affectthe aerial performance and hot gasesmay distort the radiator portion. Thescanner unit must not be mounted wherethe temperature is more than 70°C.

Mounting Methods

As shown in the figure below, the scanner unitmay be installed on the bridge, on a commonmast or on a dedicated mast.

DISPLAY UNIT

Mounting Considerations

The display unit can be mounted on a table-top, a bulkhead or on the overhead. When se-lecting a mounting location, keep in mind thefollowing points:

• Select a location where the display unit canbe viewed and operated conveniently andwhere the screen can be viewed while fac-ing towards the bow.

• Locate the equipment away from placessubject to water splash and rain.

• The display unit weighs 13 kg. Be sure themounting location is strong enough to sup-port the weight of the unit under the con-tinued vibration which is normallyexperienced on the ship. If necessary rein-force the mounting location.

• Leave sufficient space on the sides and rearof the unit to facilitate maintenance. Also, leave a foot or so of “service loop” in cablesbehind the unit so it can be pulled forwardfor servicing or easy removal of connec-tors.

• A magnetic compass will be affected ifplaced too close to the display unit. Ob-serve the following compass safe distancesto prevent deviation of a magnetic com-pass: Standard compass, 1.0 m, Steeringcompass, 0.8 m.

Tabletop Mounting

1. Unfasten the two bolts at the front of thedisplay unit to dismount the mountingbase.

2. Using the mounting base as a templatemark fixing holes in the mounting loca-tion.

3. When adjustment is completed, the mes-sage disappears.

5. Aligning heading

You have mounted the scanner unit facingstraight ahead in the direction of the bow. Therefore, a small but conspicuous target deadahead visually should appear on the headingmarker (zero degrees).

In practice, you will probably observe somesmall bearing error on the display because ofthe difficulty in achieving accurate initial po-sitioning of the scanner unit. The followingadjustment will compensate for this error.

1. Identify a suitable target (for example, shipor buoy) at a range between 0.125 to 0.25nautical miles, preferably near the head-ing marker. To lessen error, keep echoesin the outer half of the picture by chang-ing the range. Also, be sure the zoom andoff center functions are off.

2. Select 9. Heading Alignment on the Instal-lation Setup menu and press the [ACQ/ENTER] key. The following message ap-pears:

3. Operate the trackball to bisect target se-lected at step 1 with the heading marker.

4. Press the [ACQ/ENTER] key.

5. As a final test, move the boat towards asmall buoy and confirm that the buoyshows up dead ahead on the radar when itis visually dead ahead.

6. Adjusting sweep timing

This adjustment ensures proper radar perfor-mance, especially on short ranges. The radarmeasures the time required for a transmittedecho to travel to the target and return to thesource. The received echo appears on the dis-play based on this time. Thus, at the instantthe transmitter is fired, the sweep should startfrom the center of the display (sometimescalled sweep origin).

A trigger pulse generated in the display unitgoes to the scanner unit through the signalcable to trigger the transmitter (magnetron). The time taken by the signal to travel up tothe scanner unit varies, depending largely onthe length of the signal cable. During this pe-riod the display unit should wait before start-ing the sweep. When the display unit is notadjusted correctly, the echoes from a straightlocal object (for example, a harbor wall orstraight pier) will not appear with straightedges – they will be seen as “pushed out” or“pulled in” near the picture center. The rangeof objects will also be incorrectly shown.
