As Valentine’s Day approaches, you may have a few love songs stuck in your head. Interestingly enough, many love songs use the words ‘fire’ or ‘burning’ to describe love. There’s Elvis’s “Burning Love”, Dolly Parton’s “Baby I’m Burning”, and of course, Jonny Cash’s “Ring of Fire”.

There’s no harm putting fire in a love song, but when it comes to real fires and burns, there is nothing lovely about it. According to the American Burn Association, the average annual cost of scald injuries is $44 million.

The first week of February is National Burn Awareness Week. In order to stay safe and prevent burns, here are a few tips:

• Have smoke alarms on each level of your home and replace the bat-teries every 6 months.

• Make and communicate a fire escape plan for your family.

• Use oven mitts, not towels, to handle hot pots and pans.

• Create a ‘No Kid Zone’ in the kitchen around stoves, ovens, and hot items.

• Use the backburners when you cook, if possible, and turn pot handles away from the stove edge.

Make sure to also check out some of our courses on fire safety: Fire Prevention; Fire Extinguisher Training; and Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans, and Fire Prevention Plans. For upcoming dates and times, vist our website at UTAHSAFETYCOUNCIL.ORG. On-site training is also available- contact us for details.
