ACTIVE SHOOTER ON CAMPUS

We have renewed interest from many people about what to do if we have what is referred to an active shooter on campus since the school shooting in Newtown before Christmas. I will go over a few things you can do should the situation arise. Remember that your plan of action has to be made before anything happens.

1. Find secure locations near your work station and work on ways to get there every day.

2. Pay attention to your work area daily. Make sure nothing new shows up or something is missing.

3. Locate the rooms and/or closets that lock from the inside and note where they are and

how to get there.

4. Be a good witness. Get as much information as possible and pass it on to security and police personnel.

5. Get yourself and as many people as possible into the secure sites you have located.

6. Once you are safe as possible call ext 3453 and 911 to report the situation.

7. Stay on the line as long as possible to pass on all the information you have.

8. If you are in the area where shooter goes active seek immediate cover. If you are outside, seek cover first and then work on escape route to get away from area.

9. Once you and your companions are safe, be as quite as possible.

10. Do not open secured door for anyone unless you know exactly who is there.

11. Once in a secured location, stay there until all clear is given.

12. In case the shooter makes entry to your location, fight back with everything you have

available. Don’t give up and decide you are a victim.

This list is not all inclusive and only covers some basic information. Again pay attention to your work area and locate the most secure areas and make plans on how to get there. This can be a mental exercise for any free time you may have during the day.

Safety Reminders:

1. Keep up with your belongings. Do not leave your books, Cell phones or other belongings unattended. Unattended property has a way of disappearing.

2. Pay attention to who is on campus and their actions. With the Shooting Event last month in Connecticut, we are made painfully aware that bad things do happen. We need to be aware of the actions of others on campus and report any suspicious activity. Report any unusual activity immediately to proper security office.

3. Report any criminal activity immediately. We want to make all of our facilities as safe and secure for everyone while maintaining a good relationship with everyone.

4. Store the number for Public Safety/security for you campus in your phone so you will remember the numbers.
