Introduction

The goal of every educator and administrator is to keep our students safe while attending courses. This presentation outlines school safety standards in the United States, Costa Rica and Saudi Arabia.

International Standards

The International Codes, or I-Codes, published by ICC, provide minimum safeguards for people at home, at school and in the workplace. The I-Codes are a complete set of comprehensive, coordinated building safety and fire prevention codes. Building codes benefit public safety and support the industry’s need for one set of codes without regional limitations.

International Code Council (ICC)• The International Code Council is supported by over 350 Chapters spread throughout

the country and around the world. • Chapters are designated as Regional, State, Local, Professional, Student or International

depending on the geographical area they serve and the nature of their membership.• Regions I-XI are in USA based chapters• Region XII International countries that include: Asia (regions 1 and 2), Canada, Mexico,

United States School Standards• Fire and Construction Standards (New and remodel projects)• International Building and Fire Code standards (IBC and IFC)• National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) code standards

USA Minimum Building Safety Standards

• The International Building Code (IBC) is in use or adopted in 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, NYC, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

• The International Fire Code (IFC) is in use or adopted in 42 states, the District of Columbia, NYC, Guam and Puerto Rico.

• National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes• Uniform Building Code

Schools in the USA are required to have:• Fire alarm system with audible/visible notification• Required exit width for occupant load and emergency lighting• Fire suppression system (sprinklers) and extinguishers.

Costa Rica School StandardsCosta Rica Public Education System

Costa Rica boasts the most advanced and highest quality education system in the region. Primary education is compulsive between the ages of 6 and 13, and is attended by most every child in the country. Secondary education leaves pupils two choices of specification: academic (5 years) and technical (6 years) schools. Both types of institution enable students to acquire high school diplomas, which qualify them for tertiary education at universities. (Internations.org)
