Office safety• Report any potential hazard to a UWC administrator.

• Keep floors and exits clear.

• Emergency lights and first aid kits can be found in the Bat Cave coffee bar and at the reception desk.

Tell somebody

• If you observe any behavior that is concerning, report it: http://tellsomebody.tamu.edu or tell a UWC administrator.

• In an emergency situation that requires medical, psychological, or police services, call 9-911 from a campus phone. Off-campus and cell phones, call 911.

Personal safety• An escort is available by calling the Corps Guard Room at 845-

6789. Don’t stay alone in the UWC after hours.

• Know the location of emergency phones on your route to your car or dorm. Information on the emergency blue light phones, including locations, can be found at http://www.tamu.edu/upd/bluphone.htm.

• The University police phone number is posted by the reception desk. Know who Betty is and when to call her.

Harassment

• Report any harassment to UWC administrators or other university authorities.

• Clients may get emotional, but not abusive, loud, or physically threatening.

• If someone gets out of hand, leave the session area and notify an administrator. If it seems unsafe to leave, knock on the glass and ask someone to call Betty.

Personal belongings

• Never leave personal belongings unattended.• Lock up carefully at closing, making sure both

front doors are latched.

Locks & keys

• If you need the Master key, go to the Dean’s Office, Room 1.206. If the Dean’s Office is closed, go to Current Periodicals for assistance in locating custodial staff and/or call 845-3664.

• Never give out the security code if you know it.• Keep doors locked when the UWC is empty.

Fire• The back door leads directly to

the nearest fire exit, a stairwell on the right about 15 yards from the UWC’s back door. An alarm and fire extinguisher are also there.

• If a fire alarm sounds, make sure all clients exit the center quickly, then leave. If someone refuses to leave, explain this is against University policy, then leave. When you get outside, notify a building proctor or fire official.

Lightening• Alarms on campus emergency phones show a light

and make a noise when lightning is spotted within 5 miles. Immediately seek shelter in buildings, vehicles, or lightening shelters.

• Avoid open areas, elevated ground, water, flagpoles, tall trees, metal fences, golf carts, mowers, cellular phones, or radios.

Bomb threats

• Be calm and courteous. Listen carefully. Do not interrupt the caller.

• Immediately after the call obtain a dial tone and dial #91 to trace the call, then hang up and notify University Police (9-911).

Suspicious mail

• Packages with no return address or excessive postage• Misspellings of common words or restrictive markings

such as “personal” or “confidential”• Items protruding from the envelope or package, wet

areas, openings, or strange odors• Unusually heavy envelope and/or the presence of small

bulges of powder or granules

Suspicious mail

• Handle suspicious mail with care. Don’t shake or bump.

• Don’t open, taste, or smell.

• Call 9-911.

Shooting incidents

• Find a library contact to identify a safe room.• Depending on circumstances, you may have to decide to flee

or seek shelter. • Remain calm so you can think. calm, it will aid you in decision

making• Call 9-9-1-1 if possible and if you can't speak, leave the line

open so the dispatcher can hear what is taking place.

Privacy• Never give out consultation records to anyone but the client.

• Don’t give out information concerning a clients’s appointment time or location.

• Don’t discuss consultations with anyone outside of the UWC consulting staff.

• Never share a password or personal information for any staff.
