Pioneers 19th to mid-20th Century The mid-to-late 19th and early 20th

centuries were a time o social erment

First Wave eminism contributed greatly

to the Spiritualist movement o the 19th

century new Protestant Christian sects

oered women opportunities in the pulpit

and church leadership while on the western rontier new states and territories

predominantly gave women the right to vote

earlier than their eastern cousins With the

ratication o the 19th amendment in 1920

American women could vote and the sky

seemed the limit to their aspirations

It was within this social climate amidst a

strong yearning or better rights or women

that scholarship on womenrsquos places in

society rst really began Studies o history

and religion prior to the turn o the 20th

century mostly refected the viewpoints o

men since ew women were members o theacademy The seven people I have chosen or

this rst section were scholars in their own

right who wrote about womenrsquos positions

in religion and the ormation o culture and

in particular popularized the new eld o

matriarchy studies mdash which became a major

infuence on the Goddess Movement in the

decades to ollow

Remodelers and Renewers1990 - Present

The last quarter-century has seen many

triumphs or the Goddess movement We are

reer than ever to proclaim ourselves ldquoPaganrdquo

or Witches and we have Goddess airs and

temples all around the world

Political eminism has also made great

strides which has led some to wonder i gender-

specic spiritual paths are still necessary in a

(supposedly) post-gender world Foundational

ideas o womenrsquos spirituality including

gender essentialism (the belie that women

are spiritually dierent than men) are being

increasingly questioned Will the Goddess

movement ade into the past a victim o

generational die-o or will new voices arise

and bring us into an increasingly complex

world Whether our communities will have

the wisdom to honor the past while nding thefexibility to adapt to an uncertain uture is a

question only the Goddess o Time can answer

ideas o womenrsquos spirituality including

gender essentialism (the belie that women

increasingly questioned Will the Goddess
