2. Equipment Review:

Tactical Flashlights

A flashlight is a flashlight is a flashlight. Well, maybe. It sort of

depends on what you use it for. I have a large number of flashlightsstashed in various places around the house, jeep, ect. Some areinexpensive types. Like the one I keep on my desktop to look behind theforest of electronic equipment I have to find a cable plug in. Others aremore quality types that sit in my night stand, jeep door, and outdoorkit. There have been a tremendous number of tactical flashlights developedin the last few years. But one of the originals, the Maglight is still goingstrong. I remember when Maglight was the first real tactical flashlightdesigned for police and serious civilian use. And they continue to

expand their line. There are two I use and are fond of.The standard 5 cell model runs off of 5 D cell batteries. Made of anodized aluminum it has a high-intensity adjustable light beam (Spotto Flood). This is one rugged flashlight and is available in black andred. It is also shock and water resistant and carries a spare bulb in theend cap. I keep one of these in the Jeep. It also makes a great baton(club) in emergencies!

The Mini-Mag is a smaller version that fits in the pocket or on anoptional belt sheath. It also has an adjustable light beam, and the headcan be removed and used as a base making the flashlight an effectivesmall candle. I keep one of these in my survival kit. It runs off of 2 AAAbatteries and also has a spare bulb in the end cap. Also available inblack and red.

 3. Book Review:

Gun Digest Book of Personal Protection and Home

 Defense

Robert K. CampbellISBN-13:978-0-89689-938-4

Gun Digest publishes a large number of books of interest to the shootingfraternity. This digest is organized by major subject with a number of relatedarticles by subject. Some of the chapters include The Basics of Combat Shooting,Advanced Drills, Long Guns (rifle and shotgun) and Accessories and Gear to SaveYour Life.

This book is packed with information that is useful for the beginner as well asseasoned shooters. Much is written on home defense as well as defending against aknife attack. The chapter on malfunction clearing is well written and validtechnique. I can highly recommend this volume to anyone who wants a goodreference that covers a broad spectrum of training techniques and drills to protectyourself and your loved ones. You can find this book as well as the other great books on the Gun Digest websiteat: www.gundigestbooks.com

4. Shooting Fundamentals:

Breath Control

The last few issues we covered sight alignment, trigger control, andgrip. This issue I want to cover proper breathing techniques both in

range training and life and death defensive shooting. When training to improve your marksmanship on the range, breathingis a matter of rhythm. As you prepare to shoot, breathe in normally, and then exhale normally. Don’t “hold” your breath as this requiresmuscular tension which will increase your arc of movement. Once youexhale normally, you have an approximate 8 second window tocomplete the shot before you body is going to want to breathe again. The longer you wait after 8 seconds, the worse your discomfort. If youhaven’t executed the shot by then, lower the gun, begin breathing again

and start over. After awhile, this rhythm will become natural. When confronted with a stressful situation, remember to breathe.Don’t hold your breathe, keep oxygen coming in, and stop when youneed to shoot. Shooting competitive combat matches is good trainingfor this, and it is difficult to describe with just the written word.“Tactical Breathing” is a technique to get your body back undercontrol. It is used when you have a lull in the situation. It is even a goodstress reliever at work. It is composed of a 3x3x3 rhythm.Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of three seconds. Holdyour breath for three seconds. Exhale slowly through you mouth for

three seconds. Do this three times and you will be surprised at theeffect. Go ahead! Try it right now!
