Ra jeev Nagara Pub li c School

The Zilla Panchayat High School, Rajeev Nagar is a government school situated in the rural

district of Badagabettu, 6 kms away from the city of Manipal, in the Udupi district of Karnataka.

It is supported by the Sarva Siksha Abhyan scheme of the Government of India. The school has

around 250 students from the 1st Standard to 7th Standard and 80 students in the 8th, 9th and 10th

Standards. The school has around 15 teachers and 10 support with the staff being predominantly

from the local areas. Kannada is the medium of education in the school. The school has adequate

number of classrooms and a playground and being a government school, the fees are minimal.

The school follows the Karnataka state syllabus prescribed by the Govt. of Karnataka for all its

public schools. The school functions from 9:30 a.m to 4:00 p.m from Monday to Friday and from

    Dropouts

The Rajeev Nagara public school faces the problem of dropouts of students with the dropouts

increasing with every successive standard. The reasons for the dropouts range from students

beginning to work to support their families, girls getting married to casual dropouts. Many

parents of the students do not see any value in their students being educated after 10 th standard.

Ex tending th e fa ci li ti es

The Rajeev Nagara school administration is looking at extending its education facilities till the

12th Standard and prepare the students to take up the 12th Standard state examinations. The

administration faces the challenge of the increasing number of dropouts at the 10 th Standard

level. The administration also wants to improve the quality of education delivered to the students

in their current facility and want more students in the vicinity to attend the school. It wants to

come up with a model that would make this possible and also wants to be self sustainable

without depending too much on Govt. grants.

Rajeev nagar school also has a sister institute Mahatama Gandhi School, Udupi

    The Mahatma Gandhi School

The Mahatma Gandhi Corporation School is another school in the city of Udupi. The students of

that school are predominantly from the very low income category with their parents being

construction workers etc. The students are small children in the age range of 2- 8 years. The

school has only one huge hall in which all students study. There is no demarcation of standards

(1st, 2nd etc.) and all students study together. The school is in fact seen as a kind of crche for

the children of the poor. Mid day meals are provided to all the students. Though the number of

students is around 100, nearly 30 of them are irregular. The administration of this school also

faces the challenge of retaining students. It wants to streamline its activities but is wondering if it

would be possible in the current scenario.

    NOTE:

    1. Innovative solutions and ideas that are feasible will be desired and appreciated.2. The ideas shortlisted will be implemented in the schools depending on the feasibility.
