St. Gertrude the Great was a 13th century German nun, writer,
and mystic who was told by Our Lord that, each time she piously recited this prayer (below), 1,000 souls would be released from their suffering in purgatory:
“Eternal Father, I offer You the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, for those in my own home, and in my family. Amen.”
From Fr. Charbel… Corpus Christi Sunday June 3, 2018
My dear parishioners and friends
Peace be with you!
“Corpus Christi”. What a great celebration of our Catholic Churches around the whole world! The Church celebrates this feast day for the 754th time. Here is the history of this celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ. In the year 1263 a priest from Prague was on route to Rome making a pilgrimage asking God for help to strengthen his faith since he was having doubts about his vocation. Along the way he stopped in Bolsena, 70 miles north of Rome. While celebrating Mass there, as he raised the Host after the consecration, the bread turned into flesh and began to bleed. The drops of blood fell onto the small white cloth on the altar, called the corporal. The following year, 1264, Pope Urban IV instituted the feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus, today’s feast, Corpus Christi. The Pope asked St Thomas Aquinas to write hymns for the feast and he wrote two: the Tantum Ergo and O Salutaris. That blood-stained corporal may still be seen in the Basilica of Orvieto, north of Rome.
This feast emphasizes that Jesus gives Himself to us, not just in a symbolic way, but as real flesh and blood. I know that many people still find it difficult to believe that it is really the flesh of Jesus and His blood that we eat and drink. I can understand your difficulty. We don’t see any change in the bread or wine. There is no difference in the taste. The appearance and taste do not change, but the substance - that which makes it what It Is - has changed. We need to be humble and admit that our senses by themselves do not provide all the answers. Can we believe that God can perform miracles every day, making it possible for bread and wine to become the Body and Blood of Jesus? When we submit to God we will not lose anything, we will gain everything. There is a beautiful chant saying, “Trust, surrender, believe, receive.” Let’s add faith to our reasoning and receive the love of God for you! The Eucharist is the gift of God’s love for you, for me, and for the whole Church.
May Jesus in the Eucharist always be the very center and heart of our church, the center and heart of our faith, the center and heart of our parish, and the center and heart of the lives of each of us.
“O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, All praise and all thanksgiving Be every moment thine”.
In Cristo,
Fr Charbel
