Dear Parishioner,
Love your enemies. It is one of the biggest challenges humanly speaking, but it is possible with the perspective of God. Naturally the logic is to take vengeance against enemies, but to forgive is a divine act, and it is possible in the Christian view. Love and charity is the field of Christian life. We are able to forgive, if we grow in the imitation of Christ.
Love embraces the dimension of giving. Give to others our time, our apologies, ourselves. Give without expecting anything in recompense, and your reward will be in heaven. Follow the example of God, because God is kind with the ungrateful.
Love is a school. To love God, our brothers and sisters and ourselves, and to grow in maturity of love, is a process, to the point of forgiving an enemy and loving an enemy which is something that is beyond human nature. The natural men born from Adam do not understand this doctrine, in order to do so, it is necessary to be reborn in Christ.
Love is the essence of God and the first commandment. Love is the only way to conquer in the evangelization process, and is the way to heaven, very demanding to the point of the cross. Love is eternal and belongs to heaven. It is the accomplishment of this existence. If we do not love, our life is vain.
Love is the way to sanctity and the narrow way described by our Lord. Love without limits, love always, and you will see the presence of God here on earth, and in everlasting life.

Parishes of West Essex Announce 2019 Faith Quest Lenten Speaker Series
The 2019 annual Lenten adult spirituality program, Faith Quest, will be held Wednesday evenings March 20th and March 27th, April 3rd and April 10th from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Notre Dame Church at 359 Central Avenue in North Caldwell, New Jersey. The program is open to the public and the three speaker topic areas focus on: Prayer and Spirituality, Sacred Scripture, and Faith in Practice.
Wednesday, March 20 Prayer and Spirituality - “The Conversion of St. Monica: The Other Story in Augustine’s Confessions” by Father Douglas J. Milewski, professor of theology, Seton Hall University. Among Father Milewski’s areas of expertise are the Fathers of the Church and the theology and history of early Christianity. Father also serves at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Roseland.
Sacred Scripture - “The Women in Jesus’ Life” with Sister Honora Werner, O.P., a Sister of Saint Dominic of Caldwell. Sister Honora has taught extensively from the elementary school to doctoral level and most recently she taught and directed the doctoral program in preaching at Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, Missouri.
Faith in Practice - “How to be a Peacemaker: In Society, In the Church, in My Heart” by Father Timothy Graff, director, Social Concerns Office, Archdiocese of Newark. Father Graff also serves in pastoral planning, government relations and labor relations for the Archdiocese. Wednesday, March 27 Prayer and Spirituality - “My Petitions vs. Thy Will Be Done” with Ginger Grancagnolo, Ed.D., OPA, lecturer, author and counselor. Grancagnolo holds a doctorate in Christian ministry and has a background in education, psychology and theology.
Understanding Sacred Scripture - “The Saint John’s Bible: From the Middle Ages to the 21st Century” with Marie Marmo Mullaney, Ph.D., professor of history at Caldwell University. Attendees can view the sacred art of The Saint John’s Bible, the first illuminated, handwritten bible of monumental size to be created in more than 500 years. Dr. Mullaney is a historian who has taught numerous courses including “The History of Catholics in America” and “The History of the Catholic Church.”
Faith in Practice -“Our Invisible Neighbors: Detained Immigrants in New Jersey (and beyond)” with Ken Boccino, treasurer and member of the board of trustees of First Friends of New Jersey and New York, an organization which works to uphold the inherent dignity and humanity of detained immigrants and asylum seekers through volunteer visitation, resettlement assistance and advocacy. Boccino is a deacon at St. George’s Episcopal Church, Maplewood, NJ. Wednesday April 3 Prayer and Spirituality - “The Eucharist: The Meal that Nourishes, That Unites and That Identifies” with Father Robert Laferrera, pastor of Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament in Roseland, New Jersey. Father Laferrara is former associate director of the Office of Worship, Archdiocese of Newark and former chair of the Archdiocese Liturgical Commission.
Understanding Sacred Scripture - “As I have Done” with Sister Donna Ciangio, O.P., D.Min., a Sister of St. Dominic of Caldwell and chancellor of the Archdiocese of Newark. Sister, who also serves in St. Rose of Lima Church, Short Hills, will focus on how Jesus gave a great commandment to do as he did and how that affects all areas of life in accompanying others on the journey of discipleship. The discussion will focus on ways to live the command: “As I Have Done”.
We are once again preparing the annual tradition of honoring those couples in our Archdiocese who will be
celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2019. These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph Tobin in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark as follows:

Faith in Practice - “Sharing Faith, Sharing Life,” with E. Denise Peoples, double lung transplant recipient, community educator, faith based coordinator and family services coordinator for the NJ Sharing Network. She is an advocate for organ and tissue donation and for the effects the process can have on families and communities. She also founded Mae’s Plate, a non-profit named in honor of her mother, that serves home cooked meals, resources and donated supplies and clothes to individuals who are in-between homes.
Wednesday, April 10 Prayer and Spirituality - “The Gift of Our Stories: Christian Spirituality and Evangelization in Our Social Media World” with Father Antonio “Tony” Ricarte, parochial vicar at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament in Roseland. He holds a Licentiate in Missiology from the Gregorian University in Rome with a special focus on dialogue and new evangelization.
Understanding Sacred Scripture - “The Gospel within the Gospel: The Parables of Luke 15 and Lent. A Scriptural Exploration of the Prodigal Son” with Rev. Christopher M. Ciccarino, associate dean for seminary and academic studies, Immaculate Conception Seminary and editor for the revision of the New Testament of the New American Bible.
Faith in Practice - “Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching” with Jonathan D. Lace, who teaches Biblical studies and iOS application development at Seton Hall Preparatory School and is the creator of the Theologica iphone app.
An offering of $3.00 per session or $10.00 for the four week series is requested to help defray expenses. Pre-registration is also requested. Checks should be made payable to Notre Dame. For a brochure and registration form, contact any of the sponsoring parishes. Attendance at prior sessions is not necessary to benefit from participation at a later session. All sessions qualify for catechist certification.
Faith Quest began in 2007 as part of the Archdiocese of Newark’s New Energies Initiative. The four cluster parishes of West Essex -- St. Aloysius in Caldwell, Notre Dame in North Caldwell, Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Roseland and St. Thomas More in Fairfield collaborated to develop an adult education and information program that is held during the Lenten season. We would like to invite you to become part of the LIVING ROSARY. This activity was started at Saint Aloysius Parish a number of years ago as a means of joining our prayers together to pray for peace in our country and for all our special intentions. It is also in response to people’s needs for greater spiritual growth. At this time we have several teams of 5 members each participating in our living rosary. It is a power house of prayer!
This activity may be taken on by anyone. Families can participate, the home bound can become part of the Living Rosary; persons on their way to work can join also. There are no meetings to attend.
What is necessary to become part of the Living Rosary is a commitment to say one decade of the Rosary each day. You then become a member of a team who together says the entire rosary each day. It is said for the intentions of those members comprising the Living Rosary and for the specific and special intentions of our parish. It can be done at home, in the car, on the train, and any time of your day.
The Rosary has been used for centuries for world peace, against the heresy of the times, during the Nazi occupation of Poland and at many other times. This is a simple devotion, parish oriented, that demands little of its members and produces great spiritual results.

The blood donated by the donors you recruited save the lives of trauma victims, patients with blood disorders, cancer and many other life-threatening injuries and illnesses in our area hospitals. The effort of St. Aloysius Church is very sincerely appreciated as a “life – saving community service”. The results of your January 26, 2019 blood drive are as follows: Goal 14 Registered 17 Deferred 01 Collected 20 AlYX 02= 4 Total Shortages occur throughout the year especially in this area of the country. This situation puts the lives of patients who need blood in danger. LENT AT SAINT ALOYSIUS PARISH 2019 As we enter the season of Lent, we once again strive to live the Gospel message of feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and loving those who feel unloved. Each week-end special items will be accepted and distributed to different agencies in the area and for those in need. Please bring the following items to church during the season of Lent. March 9th and 10th The first week-end in Lent “Baby Shower” for children 0 – 3 years Please bring items such as disposable diapers, wipes, baby & kids tear-free shampoo, baby & kids bath soap, baby lotion, wash clothes, towels, etc. March 16th and 17th “Personal Care Boxes” Collection for local homeless shelters, Saint John’s in Newark, Catholic Charities and families in need. Please bring socks for men, women & children, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, soap, tissues, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream, band aids, combs & brushes. March 23rd and 24th “Lenten Loaves & Fishes” Food collection for local shelters, soup kitchens & families with special needs. Please bring salt free items, diabetic food, sugar free items, & gluten free foods. March 30th and 31st “Good Nutrition Begins with Breakfast” This drive is a good way to help families, the elderly, homebound and soup kitchens provide nutritious food. Please bring hot/cold cereal, canned fruit and fruit juices, breakfast bars, pancake mix, peanut butter and jelly. April 6th and 7th “Household Goods Drive” This collection will provide cleaning supplies to families, shelters and soup kitchens. Please bring laundry detergent, paper towels and napkins, cleaning supplies and toilet tissues.
