Parish Mission Statement

We, the members of St. Ambrose Parish, believe that, through our faith and baptism,

we have been called to give witness to the values of Jesus as

expressed in the Gospel and teachings of our Church.

JULY 25, 2021

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY

IN ORDINARY TIME A man came from Baal-shalishah bringing to Elisha, the man of God, twenty barley loaves made from the firstfruits, and fresh grain in the ear. Elisha said, “Give it to the people to eat.” But his servant objected, “How can I set this before a hundred people?” Elisha insisted, “Give it to the people to eat.” “For thus says the LORD, ‘They shall eat and there shall be some left over.’” And when they had eaten, there was some left over, as the LORD had said. 2 Kgs 4:42-44 5130 Wilson Avenue St. Louis, MO 63110 Parish Office Hours Monday – Friday 7:00am-4:00pm Phone: 314.771.1228 Fax: 314.771.0454 St. Ambrose School Phone: 314.772.1437 Emergency: 314-920-7924 www.stambroseonthehill.com

Dear folks: Items for this week: **Saint Ambrose Rectory Phone System: Recently, the rectory phone system was altered so that now on, weekdays from 9:00 am—3:00 pm, office personnel will answer the rectory phones instead of an automated answering system; however, there might be times when the office personnel is helping someone so that the automated system will kick in. I know that in this era, there have been more and more institutions going to an automated system for answering calls; the caller waiting for the proper extension; and then hoping the right person or office is on the other end of the line. To be honest, I think it is much more effective—pastoral, maybe (?)—to have the phones answered by a real, live person. Also, a, “Sacramental Emergency Line,” has been added to the phone system. With this, a person will be prompted to leave both a voice mail stating what the sacramental emergency is and a contact phone number. A member of the Saint Ambrose clergy will call back immediately. **Bike Race, Sunday September 5th: On Sunday, September 5th, 2021, the Giro Della Montagna, will take place; this is Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. This bike race was started over 35 years ago by Joe Torrisi who wanted to bring a popular sport from Italy to the Hill. It is now the feature race of the Gateway Cup which was started years later; the Gateway Cup is a series of 4 races over Labor Day Weekend: 1) Friday in Lafayette Square- 2) Saturday in Francis Park- 3) Sunday on the Hill- 4) Monday in the Benton Park Neighborhood- The start/finish line for this bike race is in the front of St. Ambrose; the parish parking lot is used for the sale of food, drinks, and souvenir t-shirts. Because of this important race, the 10:00 a.m. Mass that Sunday, September 5th, will be moved to 9:00 a.m. so that the race can start at 10:00 a.m. This change in time is for that weekend only. -I know people don’t like to change their Mass times, However, this event has great significance. -The exposure to the beauty of the Hill and St. Ambrose is fantastic. -That fact that all proceeds for this event go to The Hill 2000 with a donation being made to St. Ambrose makes this a really important event for the area and for St. Ambrose. **St. Ambrose School Covid-19 Protocols: Talking with Michele Grellner, Saint Ambrose School Principal, we have decided to wait until early August to announce Covid-19 protocols for the St. Ambrose School. Archbishop Rozanski, at this point, has basically given pastors/principals some latitude to decide protocols for this disease. I know that many parents are waiting to know what the protocols will be for the start of school. Both Michele and I agree that we want to wait to also see what

recommendations, if any, will be offered by the local Saint Louis City Government. Please stay tuned on this. **Sacramental News: -Saturday Morning 8:00 a.m. Mass: Beginning Saturday, August 7th, St. Ambrose will begin a Saturday morning Mass at 8:00 a.m. -Sunday Morning Mass Schedule: Beginning Sunday morning, September 12th, St. Ambrose will go back to the normal Mass schedule: 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. Italian Mass: Beginning the first Sunday in October, October 3rd, St. Ambrose will reinstate the Italian Mass at 11:00 a.m. Now, this will be a hybrid Italian Mass meaning that the prayers and music will be in Italian but the homily will be in English. As I said in my opening homily my first weekend, St. Louis is very blessed to have such cultural diversity and all of those cultures need to be respected. Part of that cultural beauty is the Italian culture. It is so important to keep the Italian culture thriving! This Mass will help support the beauty of the Italian culture. -Sacrament of Reconciliation: A) The Saturday afternoon Confessional time from 4:00 p.m.—4:30 p.m. will remain. B) Beginning Wednesday, August 4th, during Eucharistic Adoration, confessions will be heard each Wednesday from 5:00 p.m.—6:00 p.m. -Beginning Friday, August 6th, during the Eucharistic Adoration time, Confessions will be heard each Friday from 11:00 a.m.—11:45 a.m. **Installation Mass: Whenever a new pastor comes to a parish, it is regulated by canon law that he be officially installed as pastor and it is prescribed that he sign a document that he will uphold all Church teaching and orthodoxy. My installation Mass will be Sunday, August 22nd, at the 10:00 a.m. Mass. Bishop Mark Rivituso, auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis and former associate pastor at St. Ambrose, will install me. More information will be coming out about this as the time gets closer. **Vacation: I will be gone from Sunday afternoon, July 25th, through Saturday afternoon, July 31st on vacation; this was planned before I was transferred. It’s more of a, “staycation,” as I will be in the St. Louis area. **And, finally…as I am gone on vacation next week, there won’t be a pastor’s column for the week of August 1st. Have a good week! Fr. Jack
