NORTHWOL.D MOBILE POST OFFICE SERVICE
EVERY TUESDAY 1.15 - 3.15pm
This weekly service commenced on Tuesday 20th Sep. The Barnham Broom Postmaster provides the service and parks the
van at Northwold Village Hall. They have started a 6 week public consultation which is taking place from 25th October
until 6th December. At the end of this period, the Post Office will make a final decision on a safe and secure parking place
and confirm the weekly visiting day and opening hours for the village. The Post Office wish to know: ● How suitable do
you think the proposed new mobile service and stopping points are? ● How easy is it to get there? ● Any local community
issues which you think could be affected? ● Do you have any comments about the proposed days or opening hours of the
services? You can share your views via an online questionnaire at www.postofficeviews.co.uk using branch code
12011299; email „[email protected]‟, call helpline 03457 22 33 44, textline 03457 22 33 55 or Freepost.

NORTHWOLD CARE GROUP LUNCH CLUB
On Monday 14th November, the
ladies served us all a delicious meal
consisting of Toad-in-the-Hole and
vegetables followed by Queen of
Puddings. We very much missed one
of our regular diners, Mr Ken
Rounds, who has sadly passed
away. RIP Ken and our prayers and
thoughts are with your family. This
month, the ladies will be serving a
special traditional Christmas meal on
Monday 12th December at the usual
time.
Now for a moan: The Care Group
members include several people with
mobility problems and once again I
am asking if those that park on the
Village Hall Car Park could
refrain from doing so on the
second Monday of every
month. At the last lunch there
wasn't a space for anyone to park
leave alone those with mobility
problems. It is getting to the point,
especially with bad weather
approaching, that some cannot park
close enough to the entrance to the
Hall to actually get in the front
door. It would be such a shame if
due to this some people had to stop
attending!
The Car Scheme is still busy and I
shall be available right through the
Christmas Break for those of you
who need us and will always try to
get drivers for you. Please try to get
booked up for this period as soon as
you have your appointments because
although I am available, of course,
our drivers have their own family
commitments and may not be
available at very short notice. As

NORTHWOLD WI
The November meeting was our
Annual Birthday Dinner, celebrating
the inauguration of the Northwold
WI in 1937 and I am sure there are
residents of Northwold, who
remember those first ladies of our
Village WI.
Again, as last year, the event was
held at the Hare Arms at Stow
Bardolph, where 25 members
gathered for what was a lovely
evening. The food was very good
indeed, as was the service. Sue
Dearman, our new President, in her
first address to the membership,
thanked our outgoing President
Hilary, for her work during her three
years in the post. Hilary said she is
now happy to be a „back bencher‟
once again. We all wish Sue every
success and hope she enjoys her
time as President.
All the ladies looked so nice and it
was great to hear everyone chatting
animatedly, laughing and just
enjoying each other‟s company. It is
good to get away from our daily
chores, worries or anxieties. Indeed
it is one of the pleasures of life to sit
and share a meal with good friends.
We are looking forward to our
80th Birthday Dinner in 2017.
If you would like to join the
Northwold WI, or just come along
to see what it is like, you can be sure
of a warm welcome.

usual, we shall do our best.
January's meal will be served on
Monday 9th and will consist of mince
cobbler and vegetables followed by
marmalade bread pudding.
That just leaves me to wish to you all
A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS
AND HAPPY AND HEALTHY 2017.

GRIMSHOE BENEFICE RECTOR’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
Last week a very talented and generous parishioner presented me with an amazing gift that clearly took many hours of patient and detailed work. It is a knitted nativity set, but a knitted nativity with a twist I’ve never seen before. It has, in addition to a lovely handcrafted stable and all the usual suspects – Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, angels, donkey, ox, shepherds, sheep and wise men, a number of extras – several collies to herd the sheep, an archangel, a shepherd boy, three regal looking camels and an assortment of Aussie animals including a red kangaroo and joeys, a platypus, a wombat, koala and baby, a dingo and even a bilby! When its creator asked if anything was missing, I scratched my head for a minute before replying – a ring-tail possum. I’m assured that one will join its fellow antipodeans in the crib by Christmas. I didn’t dare mention that other unusual monotreme, the echidna – too spiky by half! You can imagine that this will be quite a crowded stable by Epiphany. I’ll be curious to see how the camels take to being bossed into place by the sheep dogs. I expect they’ll spit.
I’m overjoyed and overwhelmed
by this generous gift of talent and time. It’s a gorgeous and imaginative crib set and one that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.
Christmas is of course about gift and giving…God’s gift to us. Through the course of our preparation for Christmas – the time in the Church’s year we call Advent - a group here in the Benefice will reflect on God’s many gifts to us, especially gifts such as hope, compassion and tenderness. These gifts are especially needed in the unpredictability and uncertainty of today’s world.
We show love for our family and close friends at Christmas by giving gifts – lovingly hand made, like my nativity set, or bought. And we do this at this particular time because whether we realise it or not, or believe it or not, we are reflecting something of God’s boundless love to the people we love.
At Christmas God our loving Father gave us a gift beyond price – the gift of His Son, Jesus, Emmanuel, God–with-us. Jesus was born and lived among us not simply to show us the way to
God but to show us God – to see first hand, God’s compassion, patience, forgiveness, healing, peace – in a nutshell, God’s love – a love that stopped at nothing – even dying for us. The story of Christmas and the story of Easter are flip sides of the same coin.
Christmas is also about receiving gifts given in love.
When we receive a gift our natural instinct is to respond. We exchange gifts – we give and we receive. God gave…we receive that great gift of His Son for the salvation of all creation. We receive the love of God. So…what might you and I give in return?
The simple answer is there in Christina Rosetti’s poem ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’. Compared with the riches of God’s grace and loving mercy, any response on our part might seem paltry. Yet it is response to God’s love – freely given - that is the greatest gift God could ever receive - from you or from me.
What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb.

lots of English and Maths

Primary School children these
days.
Norman’s Runners:
Since I last wrote, we (as
mentioned in the last issue) had
some children take part in the 2nd
stage of the Cross Country
Competition held at Watton. Five
children represented the school in
various age groups and all ran
exceptionally well. One member of
the squad achieved 1st place in the
Year 4 boys – a tremendous
achievement. Our squad of runners
were: Beck, Chloe, Louis, Lucas
and Rory.
School life remains ever
challenging for us all – children
and staff alike. Sometimes it can be
difficult for us to maintain a
positive mind, but with the
continued support of our governors
and the community we „stand tall‟.
I and the staff team would like to
wish you all a happy and peaceful
Christmas.

THE SCHOOL REPORT
The autumn leaves are falling, the
nights are drawing in and
Christmas is approaching! It
doesn‟t seem 5 minutes since term
started and now we‟re almost at the
end of it.
In school, Christmas preparations
for Nativity performances from our
youngest children are in full swing
and our older children are busy
working on Christmas Number
Ones! It is such a busy time in
school and so exciting for the
children yet with such an intensive
curriculum, learning continues to
be the main focus for us.
The classes are all deeply emerged
in a wide variety of activities.
Throughout the term, the Year 1
and 2 children have created virtual
robots – giving them names,
favourite foods, living locations
and personalities. In year 3 and 4
the children have adorned their
classroom with features of Ancient
Egypt – it is wonderful to see their
faces depicted with their very own
Pharaoh‟s headdress on. In year 5
and 6 the children have explored
the Hindu religion, learnt about life
in Ancient Greece and amongst
other things are developing the

I apologise that there was no article
last month. Foolishly, but not
unusually, I had left writing the
article until very near the deadline
for publication. Unfortunately, my
hip developed another problem
which put me in hospital at the time
of the deadline. It is settling again
and we have completed the purchase
of our new home in Worcestershire
so there will be a gradual “soft”
move over the next few months
while, hopefully, The Old House
sells after it goes on the market in
January. Deannie and I are most
grateful for all your kind thoughts
and comments.
Talcum powder: Earlier this year,
I described how talcum powder
seemed to have disappeared. None
of the grandchildren was powdered
after changing and it transpired that
the antipathy to talcum powder had
arisen from a fear of ovarian cancer
caused by migration of the powder
from the outside to the inside, so to
speak. We left it at that; personally,
I rather regret its disappearance. It
had been around since 1894 and had
been used by younger women to
ease the discomfort of shaving
rashes and chafing caused by tight
fitting trousers. Older women have
been bombarded with advertising
about talcum powder and “personal
freshness”. Happily, it is still
available and I have no risk of
ovarian cancer!
NEWSFLASH! An American lady
battling ovarian cancer has just been
awarded £57 million in a law suit
against Johnson and Johnson,
accusing them of “negligent
conduct” in making and marketing
its baby powder. 2,000 similar
cases are pending but there is still
tremendous argument about
whether or not talcum powder
causes ovarian cancer and many
experts assert that there is no
credible evidence of the link
between talcum powder and
ovarian cancer. Watch this space!
A man popped out to the pub
for a quick drink after work on
Friday. One thing led to another
and he rolled home on the Monday
morning. His wife was furious, tore
into him and finished by asking him
how he would feel if he didn't see
her for three days. “That would be
fine by me” he replied. However,
she did not leave, but the final joke was on him – on the second day,
his left eye opened enough for him to see her.
A nun got into a cab and
noticed the very handsome driver
staring at her. The driver told the
nun that he had always fantasised
about kissing a nun and she replied
“That will be fine, as long as you
are single and catholic”. He told
her that he was indeed single and catholic and they enjoyed a kiss.
Afterwards, the driver started to
weep and confessed that he had
lied and that he was married and
Jewish. “That's OK,” said the nun,
“my name is Kevin and I am on the
way to a fancy dress party!”
JOKES FOR PEOPLE „OUR‟ AGE:
An elderly couple became
forgetful and the doctor suggested
they write everything down to help
them remember. The wife asked her
husband for ice cream, topped with
strawberries and cream. He refused
to write it down, saying that he could
easily remember that! Twenty
minutes later, he returned and
presented her with bacon, eggs, sausage and tomato. She stared at
the plate and asked “Where's my
toast?”
Three old men were out
walking. The first one said “Windy,
isn't it?” The second said “No, it's
Thursday.” “So am I” said the third,
“Let's go for a beer!”
An old man goes into an ice cream parlour and climbs
laboriously and slowly on to the stool before ordering a banana split.
The waitress asks kindly “Crushed
nuts?” “No” he replied “Arthritis”
A few days after his medical
check-up, an 82 year old is spotted
by his doctor who comments on the
beautiful young lady on his arm.
“Just taking your advice, Doc, you
told me to get a hot mamma and be
cheerful”. “No” said the doctor “I said “You've got a heart murmur –
be careful!”
An old couple decide to marry and go into a chemist shop. “Do you
sell medicine for rheumatism –
Viagra – medicine for memory
problems, arthritis, jaundice –

STORIES FROM THE WAR MEMORIAL
Lieutenant PHILIP ANTHONY ASSHETON
HARBORD MC
SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE
9TH JANUARY 1918
CITATION FOR THE AWARD OF MILITARY CROSS
“2nd Lt. P.A.A. Harbord, G. Gds. Spec. Res. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. It was largely due to his initiative that when the right of his battalion was held up by a strong-point the attack was continued in an unbroken line and the strong-point out flanked. He remained in the front line throughout the shell fire, and by his magnificent example kept up the spirits of his men under the most trying weather conditions and constant heavy fire.”
Second Lieutenant GEOFFREY WILLIAM JARRED
2nd Lt G. W. Jarred had travelled aboard the Troop Ship Aragon, from Marseille to Alexandria, arriving on 30th December 1917. The Aragon was allowed into the harbour, but later ordered out again. Being forced to anchor outside the harbour and without any protection from attack by submarines, the Aragon was an easy target for U-boat, UC34, under the command of Horst Obermuller. 2nd Lt Jarred was one of 610 casualties out of 2,700 passengers. The destroyer HMS Attack had dashed to her rescue as she sunk quickly, as well as every available ship within reach. Many of the men rescued and taken onto the HMS Attack had just stripped their oil-drenched clothes from their bodies and laid on the deck, when she too was torpedoed by the same submarine, almost blowing her in two. The following day - New Years Eve - just as the rescue was called off, fleet auxiliary craft HMS Osmanieh also hit a mine in the area, taking another 197 soldiers and nurses down with her.

MINUTES OF NORTHWOLD and WHITTINGTON PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD AT
NORTHWOLD VILLAGE HALL ON TUESDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2016 @ 7.30pm
**DRAFT UNTIL SIGNED BY CHAIR**
Councillors present: A Collins
(Vice Chair, chairing the meeting),
G Gillett, S Gillett, A Jenkinson,
S Leet, A Muir, M Peake
Councillors absent: R Crisp
(Chair), C Anderson, F Eglington,
C Pointeer.
Others present:
Seven members of the public,
Clerk J Taylor
Item 16/11/1/1
Public Forum
A member of the public queried the
status of the phone box in
Northwold. This was to be dealt
with under a later Agenda item.
The lack of police representation at
PC meetings was queried. It was
explained that this ceased some
time back, due to budget pressures.
It was agreed to investigate
whether relevant police reports
might be sent to the PC, and to put
forward a specific request
regarding bike races on the A134
and how many riders had been
registered as speeding.
Action: Councillors/Clerk
Several residents from Normandy
Close wished to have clarification
on the legal status of the amenity
land within the Close. It was
confirmed that the PC did not own
any of the relevant land and
therefore would not continue with
grounds maintenance on that area.
Residents were given some
advice on how they may wish to
proceed in this matter. Residents
thanked the Parish Council for
maintaining the area over a
number of years.
Item 16/11/1/2
Local Authority Reports
i. Norfolk County Council
No report.
ii. KLWNBC
Cllr Peake: no report.

commented that there was some
disquiet from members regarding
the Minuting of reasons for

impression this might give and
this subject would be pursued
later.
Item 16/10/6/4
Members’ Declaration of
Interest on Items on the Agen-
da
All members (excluding Cllr
Peake) declared on Budget and
Precept discussions. Clerk issued
dispensations to those present and
declaring, in order that a
discussion could take place. Cllr
Peake did not require a
dispensation as he does not pay
personal Council Tax in Northwold
& Whittington Parish.
Item 16/11/1/5

of the meeting held on
4th October 2016 (LGA 1972,

Item 16/11/1/8
Correspondence
i. BCKLWN – call for sites
and policy suggestions
consultation. Councillors felt it
would be inappropriate for the
Council to respond, as it did not
own relevant land. Cllr Peake
commented that the main aim is for
residents to be made aware that
they can submit land for
consideration for development.
Deadline is 28 November. Cllr
Peake had also been in touch with
the Planning Task Group, and had
explained that Northwold is
interested in having reasonable
levels of development within the
village.
ii. Royal Mail – public
consultation on mobile PO
service, Northwold. RM
confirmed the new service, and the
consultation period. Vice Chair
commented that residents seemed
to be happy with the service.
iii. NCC – Better Broadband/
provision of upgrade to
Northwold. NCC confirmed
timeline of upgrade to Methwold 5
Cabinet – new service to be
available within six to 12 months.
iv. Red Cross – request for
donation. PC declined to donate.
Item 16/11/1/9
Planning Applications and
Updates (since last meeting)
i. Notification of new property
addresses: 10, 12 & 14 Hall Lane,
Northwold.
ii. Notification of new
property address: 44B Methwold
Road, Northwold.
Both noted.
Item 16/11/1/10
Parish Noticeboards – to
consider cost and approve
purchase
Clerk had obtained two quotes
and a comparison from another
parish. Councillors considered
that the quotes were too
expensive. It was suggested that
perhaps just the pinboard might
be replaced (though the small size
of existing noticeboards was
noted), or that Mr Parfitt might be
approached to see if he would be
interested in being involved. Cllr
Leet suggested that pupils from
the Sheridan School might be
interested in providing
noticeboards as a project.
Action: Cllr Leet to contact
Sheridan School. Item to be
considered further.
Item 16/11/1/11
2017/18 Wish List/Capital
Works – to consider for
inclusion in Budget
Cllr Leet mentioned that the
footpaths around the Common
and at Riverside have become
impassable and perhaps that
might be included as an
additional item. Action: Clerk
to obtain quotes to be included
in the grounds maintenance
contract.
Item 16/10/6/12
Northwold Car Scheme – to
consider basis of continuing
support
Vice Chair provided some figures
from the Car Scheme: in the last
full period to end October 2016,
57 residents had used the car
scheme for 397 journeys. There
had been a recent spike, as
occasionally, one resident will
need a very high number of
journeys, more than the average.
He stated that if the funding for the
Car Scheme were endangered, he
would feel obliged to resign from
the Council and advised other
councillors that their positions
would become very difficult.
The overwhelming feeling from
among Councillors was that the
Car Scheme should continue to be
funded, despite the increase in cost.
A more realistic Budget figure of
£1,800 for 2017/18 was suggested,
with an agreement that if more
funds than this were needed, the
Council would take a further
formal decision at the time. It was
proposed that continued funding
for the Car Scheme be included in
next year‟s Budget: proposed; Cllr
Collins, seconded; Cllr Leet.
All in favour.
Resolved: 16/10/6/12.1.
Item 16/11/1/13
Northwold Cemetery – to
consider action re headstones
Cllr Collins restated the problem of
some (11) headstones not being
securely fixed. These belonged to
families where no member
remained in the village. He
proposed asking Bonnetts to quote

the headstones, to which the stones
could be securely lashed. He would
ask Bonnetts to provide the quote
for the next meeting. Other than
this, the Cemetery was looking in
good condition.
Action: Cllr Collins.
Item 16/11/1/14
Whittington Recreation Ground
– to consider works and
long-term maintenance
Mr Akers had provided a quote for
works to put the Recreation
Ground into good, long-term order.
As this was not directly
comparable with the quote received
earlier in the summer from CGM,
Clerk was asked to request a
further directly comparable quote
from them. Action: Clerk.
Item 16/11/1/15
BT Telephone Boxes, Northwold
and Whittington – to consider
adoption
Cllr Collins reported that BT was
applying for permission to remove
460 telephone boxes from Norfolk.
To adopt a box would cost £1 and
two residents had already offered
to repaint the box at Northwold. It
was proposed that N&WPC adopt
the boxes in Northwold and
Whittington: proposed: Cllr
Collins; seconded: Cllr Peake. All
in favour. Resolved 16/11/1/15.1.
Action: Clerk.
Item 16/11/1/16
Whittington Churchyard – to
consider agreement to maintain
Closed Churchyard
The Parish Council had not yet
received the formal request to
maintain the churchyard, but
considered the issue in
anticipation of that request in
order to budget for it in 2017/18.
Cllr Collins explained that if the
PC declined to maintain it, the
District Council (BCKLWN)
would take on the responsibility,
but would charge the PC for this
which would cost more. It was
proposed that N&WPC, when
asked, agree to maintain the
Closed Churchyard at
Whittington: proposed; Cllr
Collins, seconded; Cllr Leet. All
in favour.
Resolved: 16/11/1/16.1.
Item 16/11/1/17
Finance and Policies
i. Parish Council Bank
Balances and reconciliation
from list of payments and
receipts. The bank balance and
reconciliation were received and
adopted and signed by the Vice
Chair. Proposed: Cllr S Gillett;
seconded Cllr Jenkinson;
All in favour.
Resolved: 16/11/1/17.1.
ii. Cheques for approval and
signing and to authorise
payment of outstanding
invoices.
Payments were approved:
proposed; Cllr Peake; seconded;
Cllr Muir; all in favour Resolved:
16/11/1/17.2. Cheques were
signed by Cllr Collins and
retained by him to obtain the
signature of the Chair at a later
time.
iii. Budget 2017/18 and Parish
Precept Request: to consider It was proposed that the Precept
remain the same as for current
financial year: proposed; Cllr
Peake; seconded; Cllr Muir. All in
favour. Resolved: 16/11/1/17.3.

Draft 2017/18 Budget – some
items awaited resolution at the

Item 16/11/1/18
To consider Grounds
Maintenance Contract
Clerk’s Note: Vote was incorrectly
conducted, as a councillor
inadvertently failed to declare a
pecuniary interest. However, on
checking with the BCKLWN
Monitoring Officer, as the vote was
carried with more than one vote
difference, the vote can stand.
It was proposed that Normandy
Close be removed from the
grounds maintenance contract, but
that Water Lane Whittington,
footpath to Fendick‟s Field and
area at Northwold Village Hall be
retained. Proposed: Cllr Peake;
seconded: Cllr Muir; five in
favour; one against; one
abstention; carried.
Resolved: 16/11/1/18.1.
It was proposed that the quote from
CGM Grounds Maintenance, for
one year only, be accepted.
Proposed: Cllr Peake; seconded:
Cllr Jenkinson: All in favour.
Resolved: 16/11/1/18.2.

SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS [PG] Starring; Kelly Macdonald, Rafe Spall, Andrew Scott
Based on British author Arthur Ransome's popular children's books of the 1930s and 1940s, four children dream of escaping the tedium of a summer holiday with their mother. When finally given permission to camp on their own on an island in the middle of a vast lake, they are overjoyed. But when they get there they discover they may not be alone... The battle for ownership of a lonely island teaches them the skills of survival, the value of friendship and the importance of holding your nerve. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Lake District, Swallows and Amazons is a heartwarming adventure for all the family.
