THE SPIRIT THAT RENEWS ALL THINGS Everybody admits that the Church is now facing diffi-cult situations. Too many scandals, abuses and wounds have considerably affected and damaged her image and credibility. Many are suffering while others are portending the near end of the Church. The feast we celebrate this weekend is very significant regard-ing the existence and the mission of the Church. With Pentecost the Church is indeed celebrating a new birthday. Despite human weaknesses and failures, the Church still exists. For the Church is under the sign of the cross. She always seems to be dying, while actu-ally she is always being renewed, reshaped, and revi-talized thanks to the power of the Holy Spirit. Fifty days after Easter, the Paraclete promised by the Lord has come. The disciples have been led to welcome the new mode of Jesus’ presence in their midst. Through the power of the Spirit we are sent to be signs of Christ’s presence in the world, signs of God’s love and tenderness to the world. “Only one Spirit but many gifts,” Saint Paul said. Each of us has a share in them. Every single Christian has received the gifts of the Spirit to grow in God’s love and holiness. Each of us has received special gifts not only for our own good but for the good of the whole Christian Commu-nity. What are your gifts? What are my gifts? Do we recognize them? Do we welcome them? Do we truly use them for the edification of the great family of God? Cardinal Newman wrote: “God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to an-other. I have my mission…” The Holy Spirit will contin-ue to reshape our Church. But he wants to do it with each one of us. He greatly expects our cooperation and engagement to make our Church move forward despite all. Veni Sancte Spiritus! O, Come Holy Spirit and renew the face of the earth! LA FETE DE PENTECOTE:

Pentecôte est un terme dérivé du grec ‘pentekostos’, qui signifie 'cinquantième', appliqué au cinquantième jour après Pâques. Dans l’Ancien Testament la pentecôte juive a été le point culminant de la fête des semaines avec la présen-tation des gerbes à Dieu et par l'offrande des pains sans levain, représentant les premiers produits de la récolte (Lévitique 23,17; Deut 16, 9). Dans le Nouveau Testament la Pentecôte rappelle la venue du Saint-Esprit sur l’Eglise. En effet, lorsque Jésus devait retourner vers son Père, il avait chargé ses disciples de rester à Jérusalem afin de recevoir une force d'en haut. Comme un groupe de 120 priaient dans une chambre haute en compagnie de la Très Sainte Vierge Marie (Ac 1, 14), le Saint-Esprit est effective-ment descendu sur eux avec le bruit d'un grand vent et avec des langues de feu sur chacun d'eux. Ils ont commen-cé à parler en d'autres langues et à prêcher avec audace au nom du Christ, avec le résultat que trois mille personnes ce jour-là furent convertis. Cette énorme manifestation de la puissance divine a marqué le début de la mission de l'Eglise. Faut-il rappeler que la Pentecôte est la troisième grande fête chrétienne, après Pâques et Noël.

It is Pentecost Sunday! The message in today’s scriptures are clear: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you. . .” “they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues. . .” Now, we are called to proclaim the good news of salvation in words and deeds – which simply means sharing with others how God has worked in our lives. Pray to the Holy Spirit this week asking for the cour-age to bear witness to Christ’s love.

La fête de la Pen-tecôte est le Mystère de Dieu qui a racheté le monde par son Fils, et celui de l'Eglise, Corps du Christ. Jésus a promis un Défenseur, l'Esprit Saint. Cet Esprit, reçu par les Apôtres, est donné à tous les croyants. Saint Paul insiste sur son action en chacun comme dans l'Église: il structure et unifie l'être du chrétien; il donne à la commu-nauté son unité et sa cohésion grâce aux cha-rismes divers, largement distribués pour le bien de tous et le développement harmonieux du corps entier. En cette fête de la Pentecôte, lais-sons-le descendre sur nous. Qu'il nous apprenne à parler la langue de Dieu, celle de l'amour.
