From the Pastor’s Desk...
Each year on the Memorial of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
(Jan. 4) we pray:
O Lord, we ask that you look graciously
upon our gifts placed on your altar
in celebration of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton,
and grant that by the power at work in this sacrifice,
that we may be more deeply inserted into
the Mystery of your Son,
who lives and reigns forever and ever.
And what is this Mystery? Well, since it’s a mystery it
cannot be fully or definitively expressed in words, ideas,
mathematics or computer algorithms. This is why we
human beings go to symbolic modes of communication
(poetry, metaphor, visual arts, music, song, dance and
ritual) in our feeble but essential efforts to be open to and
receive the Mystery that we will be celebrating in a most
solemn and reverent manner this week during the Paschal
Triduum: The Paschal Mystery.
For decades I have been drawn to this
image by Helen Siegl who titled this
print “Alleluia”; however, I have come
to refer to this print both as “The Most
True Thing” in that I think the most true
thing we can know is that at every
nanosecond God in Christ is working to
put to death in us all that is not of Christ
and raise up in us all that is of Christ: “Christ come to full
stature” (Ephesians 4:13). This is the vertical dimension of
the Mystery that is brought to light with the word “Easter”:
the sun rises in the East and the Son rises on Easter.
PASCHAL PROCESS – This Saturday night, shortly before
our three catechumens are
baptized, we will hear
proclaimed, “Are you
unaware that we who
have been baptized in
Christ Jesus were
baptized into his
death? We were
indeed baptized with
him into death, so that,
just as Christ was
raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too
might live in newness of life” (Romans 6:3-4).
THE PASCHAL PROCESS – is a second name I give to
Helen Siegl’s print. Terms for this week’s Paschal Three
Days that derive from the Hebrew word for Passover
(Pesach)---such as Pascha, (Latin), Pascua (Spanish), Pasqua
(Italian), Pâques (French)---connect us with the horizontal
aspect of the Mystery as we hear echoes of our ancestors
passing out of Egypt, passing through the Red Sea, passing
through the desert, passing into a Covenant with God,
passing through the Jordan River and passing into the
Promised Land. St. Paul instructs us that “we are always
carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life
of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live
are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus,
so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal
flesh.” (2 Corinthians 4:10-11)
PRAY, FAST, LEARN, GIVE
We encounter Jesus this week in
Jerusalem, a community he knew
well. We prayerfully enter our own
communities too, encountering
those who are hungry and thirsty, those who need our help.
How does our Lenten journey motivate us to serve those we
meet in our daily lives? Visit crsricebowl.org for more. At
the end of Lent, we ask you to convert your Rice Bowl
donations into one check and place that check into the
collection basket on Holy Thursday or on Easter Sunday.
LENTEN RENEWAL
This Lent some long-delayed
repair work is being done in the
sanctuaries of both St. Ann Church
and Sacred Heart Church. When
these repairs are completed each
sanctuary will need to be repainted. The cost of all this work
is $17,855. If you would like to contribute to this effort
please make checks available to St. Ann Church and write
SANCTUARY REPAIRS in the memo line. Thank you.

Did you know our kindergarten program is
staffed by certified and degreed teachers all
day? Our afternoon program is run by the
same certified teachers who teach our students
in the morning. In addition, our kindergarten
students are taught by the same specialists our
older students see in art, music, STEAM, library, physical
education, and technology! Our students experience all this in a
faith-filled environment. Registration is now open for the 2018-
19 school year. For more information or to schedule a personal
tour, email us at [email protected] or

Please pray for the sick, disabled, homebound members of our Parish Family.
In The Denial of Saint Peter, the sinner whom Carravaggio highlights, is Peter himself. The artist relates the narrative, which is found in all four Gospels, when after being questioned, Peter denies Jesus three times before the cock crows. Peter points to himself, as if to say, “Who? Me?” While Caravaggio succinctly captures the narrative, he more significantly captures the brokenness of Peter. One does not sense an argumentative Peter, but rather a humiliated one. Peter, who was filled with passion and zeal, stumbled when that passion meant persecution and possible death. Peter’s weakness proves that human frailty can only be overcome by uniting one’s self to the Passion of Christ. (Fr. John Gribowich, a student of art history with a specialty in Caravaggio, www.magnificat.com)

March 25, 2018
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
On Good Friday, March 30, 2018, we celebrate the mystery of the
Lord’s Passion, contemplating the sacrifice by which Jesus
redeemed the human race from sin and death.
It also has been our longstanding tradition as Catholics to offer
alms in support of the Catholic Community in the Holy Land. As
directed by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, funds generated by
this collection support programs and services in the Holy Land.
Support is needed to maintain the sacred places, to provide
educational and pastoral programs as well as outreach programs
for the poor through established charitable institutions.
On behalf of those Christians and others in so much need, I seek
your most generous and sacrificial support of the Good Friday
Collection for the Holy Land on March 30, 2018. I know that
God our Father will reward your generosity beyond all measure.
Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ,
+Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
Archbishop of Philadelphia
