HISTORY OF PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES

AT SAINT ANSELM COLLEGE

Every four years, Saint Anselm College becomes "America's Classroom" in the election season preceding New Hampshire’s Primary—now celebrating its 100th anniversary as “first in the nation.” Home to the New Hampshire Institute of Politics (NHIOP), a political gathering place of all major contenders for the White House, Saint Anselm has a rich 50-year history of hosting debates and presidential primary events. ABC News chose the college for a Republican primary debate in January 2012; CNN previously held a debate at Saint Anselm in June 2011. CNN and ABC conducted four debates for the 2008 election cycle. Saint Anselm College has a history of hosting debates going back to the 1980s. In 1984, the League of Women Voters chose the Dana Center for the Humanities as the venue for its New Hampshire Presidential Primary debate not only for its adequate seating, proper lighting and sound and protection for the candidates, but also because Saint Anselm welcomed the debate with classic Benedictine hospitality. This debate, which featured Walter Mondale, John Glenn, Jesse Jackson, and the primary winner, Gary Hart, marked the beginning of an important political relationship between this small Catholic college and debate sponsors. The excitement returned to Saint Anselm in February of 1988. Undaunted by a formidable, February snowstorm, the league sponsored separate Democratic and Republican debates broadcast by Cable News Network (later known as CNN). The 1988 Democratic forum featured Mike Dukakis, Al Gore, Bruce Babbitt, Dick Gephardt, Gary Hart, Paul Simon, and Jesse Jackson. The next day George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, Jack Kemp, Pierre S. du Pont, and Pat Robertson gathered for the Republican debate. In 1992, Democrats who wanted to unseat President Bush gathered in the Dana Center. The debate, the only one held without an audience at Saint Anselm, was reported by CNN and New Hampshire Public Radio. The candidates included Jerry Brown, Bill Clinton, Tom Harkin, Bob Kerrey, and Paul Tsongas. The last debate held at Saint Anselm prior to the creation of the college's New Hampshire Institute of Politics was in 1996, featuring Republican candidates Bob Dole, Steve Forbes, and Pat Buchanan. CNN sponsored the debate, marking the end of the League of Women Voters' long run as a primary debate organizer. From then on, commercial broadcasters became the main sponsors of debates. The New Hampshire Presidential Primary on February 9, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Granite State conducting the first primary in the United States for the presidential election cycle. Over the past seven decades, Saint Anselm College has experienced hundreds of visits, talks, speeches and other election-related events including national political figures. Between 2014-2015, 15 candidates for the country’s highest office appeared at Politics & Eggs, a NH event series and tradition conducted by the New England Council and the NHIOP.

NEW HAMPSHIRE INSTITUTE OF POLITICS

AT SAINT ANSELM COLLEGE www.anselm.edu/nhiop

As New Hampshire celebrates the 100th anniversary of its first-in-the-nation Presidential Primary, Saint Anselm College marks 50 years of recognition as the nearly-mandatory campaign stop of aspirants for the country’s highest office. With campus as an important backdrop, presidential candidates appear at the college’s New Hampshire Institute of Politics & Political Library (NHIOP) to present themselves and appeal to voters.   The New Hampshire Institute of Politics & Political Library was founded on the premise that an educated citizenry is vital for a healthy democracy. Since its doors opened in 2001, the Institute has provided a nonpartisan forum for discussion and debate on all aspects of the American political process. Its mission is to educate, engage and empower citizens to participate in the civic and political life of their local, national and global communities. The Institute offers unparalleled opportunities to be in the front row of a democratic process that impacts the world. Tune in to any political news or talk show or pick up the day's Wall Street Journal or New York Times, and you encounter individuals who have appeared at the Institute. State representatives, U.S. senators, primary candidates, and campaigners are regular visitors, especially during an election cycle. Here, citizens hear major policy speeches, high-level candidate endorsements, and interviews with global leaders. They hear experts on issues such as the environment, health care, civil rights, the economy, international affairs—all critical to decisions that have an impact on our lives. Nowhere else in northern New England are there so many opportunities to meet today's most prominent thinkers.  Located on the campus of Saint Anselm College, the Institute is housed in a 20,000-square-foot facility that contains an auditorium, television studio, research center, classrooms, seminar rooms, academic offices, a computer lab, and the Common Ground Café. The facility is regularly used by community organizations such as the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, AARP New Hampshire, American Legion, political groups, and high schools. In 2010, the New Hampshire Political Library relocated to the Institute, merging two of New Hampshire's great political organizations. A number of the Political Library's board members joined the Institute's board. They continue to carry on the mission and traditions of the library that was founded by Gov. Judd Gregg and Secretary of State William Gardner to provide programming and exhibits associated with New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation presidential primary. The work of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics & Political Library is made possible in part by an award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), U.S. Department of Commerce.
