TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE DESK OF

FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PASTOR….

I have come not to establish peace, but rather division

In the last month’s years, we have experienced different kind of divisions, violence and the ab-sence of peace. That is far of what our Lord in-tended or meant with his words mentioned in today’s Gospel. The division that the Lord created with His pres-ence and His teachings are not real divisions but are based on those who do good and those who do bad. If we are the kind of people that build, we will be separate of those who destroy, when we love, we make ourselves different from those who hate. A division not intended as a division itself, but as the failure of doing the right thing. The Gospel inspires everyone to do good, to love, to build, to accept, I repeat it in-spires and invites every single one. God does not segregate; we start the division when we do not embrace the Gospel. In our faith we do not segregate people because they are not like us, in language, nationality, as-pect, age, sex, or profession, everyone is invited to participate because we are all one in Jesus: There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. ( Gal 3,28). When Jesus said that He did not come to estab-lish peace, he does not mean the peace that we are thinking, but a peace that is not real, the peace of the Lord and the peace of the world are two different things. He is referring to the peace that the world offers: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (Jn 14:27). That is why even though things around us cannot be all in place; in our interior, we could always have peace. We are called to peace, a peace that starts in us and should be in the world in which we live in, we are called to be an instrument of peace.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Have you ever been frustrated? Foolish question, I know, frustration is all too familiar. Today’s reading shows that even Jesus can be frustrated. His words feel like sharp jabs, “set the earth on fire” and “how great is my anguish” and “Do you think … I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” and finally “a household … will be divided.” Taken out of context it can sound as if Jesus is throwing in the towel, but calmer reflection allows us to see the fundamental truth of our often inability to be Christ for one another. One aspect of fire is purification, this is the sense in which he wants the earth to undergo. Part of the purification, like fire, removes part of what it purifies. We all generate veritable “ashes” of ourselves as we grow in faith. That means we ought not to remonstrate with ourselves about the failures we’ve grown beyond. A similar image is that of the potter working clay; in order to form the finished product there are pieces of clay that are superfluous and are discarded. Our spiritual life asks that we be our own potter, molding ourselves ever more closely to the image of Jesus. If we wondered what Jesus’ feelings were “anguish” tells us. Giving the saving word to people who can’t or won’t hear it had to have tormented him. There is no denying the importance of his mission and finding deaf ears is at times too much for him. When Jesus speaks about a household divided it is not a desired outcome but rather represents how essential following him is. It’s more important than even family relationships. Division is meant to emphasize the fundamental basis that faith in Jesus forms in us. Make no mistake, we humans need constant reminders and renewal of our commitment as Christians. It is to form us in ways that turn us away from commonly accepted worldly success. Remember last week’s Gospel in which Jesus reminds us that “where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” The Kingdom that Jesus reveals to us is our treasure, so valuable that our very hearts desire seeks it. What we sometimes forget is the constant repetition needed to build up the primacy of the Kingdom. Too often it seems far off, something we desire certainly, but which we let ourselves defer because … there is time, I’ll get around to that soon. The error is that the Kingdom is not just promised at the final judgment. Rather it is here and now, don’t delay, light a “fire” and purify ourselves of the distractions we choose that so frustrated Jesus. On our own we struggle and need assistance in living as Jesus asks of us. Ask regularly for help in keeping our fire burning.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Was Jesus green? You bet, traveling about carrying nothing with him, depending on the goodness of those he met. Maybe by “lightening” what we carry we can be Christ for one another by using less.

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL FR. SERGIO OVANDO,

No, sino división».

Unexpected Blessings in Ghana

This summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to serve with my son at Awaso Academy International in Ghana. There were ten of us on the team includ-ing a father, a grandmother and four pairs of a par-ent and youth. We all brought different gifts and tal-ents and shared them in various ways in the school. It was an opportunity to connect with our brothers and sisters across the world. Yet as a parent, my natural inclination was to voice my expectations to my son, drive the agenda and even manage his ex-perience. Service to others does not work that way - we go where and when we are called and needed. One of the hardest parts of the trip for me was to let go and let the trip unfold for him as it needed to. It was amazing to see the unexpected Holy Spirit moments of blessing: dancing and singing with the school children after school while waiting with them for their bus rides home, connecting with a 5th grad-er named Raymond and getting enveloped in a fu-neral celebration in the main area of town, celebrat-ing the life of “Mad Mary”. I mention only a few be-cause I am still processing the experience and the impact on and transformation in my son, the team and the community in Ghana will unfold in the months and years to come. I encourage parents to serve together with your chil-dren - it is a wonderful way to grow in faith together and share and experience God’s love with others. A special thank you to Fr. Paul Mensah and to all in our parish and Morgan Hill community who made the trip possible with your support and prayers!

ONE FAMILY’S EXPERIENCE IN THE FOCUS SAFE PARK PROGRAM

In February 2018 a mother, father and two school-aged children, through a turn of fortune, found themselves living in their car. They were highly stressed and their marriage was strained when they were accepted into the FOCUS Safe Park Program. The Program’s Case Worker immediately began to work with the family to attain stable housing. They faced two major obstacles: paying off debt to rebuild their credit, and meeting the income require-ments to qualify for housing. The father took a part time and on-call job earning higher wages with the hope of becoming a permanent full-time day employee, only to be let go after the Holiday Sea-son. The mother was then forced to leave a secure part time administrative job and accept a lower wage full time retail position. As all this was going on the parents, who had only one car, managed the transportation schedules to and from work, as well as those of their children’s school. Some daily stress was relived as the Safe Park provides shower and laundry services on site and families can have breakfast and pack up lunch or snacks for the day. The Case Worker is also available to provide emotional support and guidance for the social issues that arise in and among homeless families. Over the course of the year, the family was able to pay off their debts. Once the father secured a swing shift job at a good wage, they qualified for Rapid Rehousing. With help from their support team, the family secured an apartment and moved in just as school got out in June 2019 giving their two children hope and excitement for their summer vacation in their own home. Throughout their struggles, the families demonstrate daily courage and a persistent desire to provide a better life for their family. The Case Worker provides resources, and a case plan requiring step-by-step accountability and mutual respect. Case Worker Janessa says, “We didn't just house these individuals but we hope to have improved the quality of their lives during their period of homelessness by providing them this safe place!” Case Worker Celia says, “We work through one day at a time, one step at a time, side by side, with our families.” From July 2018 through June 2019, our team has: • Processed 52 applications to the Car Park, represent-

God is great all the time, all the time, God is great!

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Adult: When has your taking a strong stand on a moral issue created division rather than healing in the short term? Child: Is it important to do the right thing even if others are angry as a result? Why or why not?

LADIES OF CHARITY For the third year The Ladies of Charity Morgan Hill, with funding from the Morsilli Family Fund, helped low-income students begin the school year prepared by filling 250 backpacks with school supplies. The backpacks were distributed through the St. Cathe-rine’s Community Closet Back to School events. These events help families in need get ready for school by providing gently used children’s clothing and now school supplies. This year 147 families were served. The Ladies of Charity Morgan Hill is a branch of the Ladies of Charity in the U.S. and the world. The La-dies were founded by St. Vincent de Paul in 1617 to make Christ present by serving the material and spir-itual needs of the sick, the poor, and the marginal-ized of society. The Ladies meet regularly to conduct business and to reflect on our Catholic faith and how God is revealed to us through our service. You can find more information on the Ladies of Char-ity Morgan Hill at ladiesofcharitymh.weebly.com.

ST. CATHERINE WOMEN'S FAITH SHARING GROUP

St. Catherine Women's Faith Sharing Group meets on Wednesday mornings in the Parish Center at 9:00 am. We select books or DVD's as a group and meet each week to discuss share and pray together. After a summer break we will be starting back up on Wednesday, Au-gust 21st. We will be reading a new book and sharing our faith as a group. The book is titled Living the Lord's Prayer by Albert Haase, O.S.M. If you have any questions or would like a little more information, please contact Ann Poirier at [email protected] Our ministry's mission is to be a loving, support-ive and trustworthy place for the sharing of our lives, and to help each other grow in their own personal faith journey.

ALL WOMEN ARE INVITED!

CLOTHING CLOSET UPDATE The clients and volunteers of the St. Catherine's Community Closet wish to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU to the generous, faithful communi-ty of St. Catherine Church for your donations and additional help during the July Back to School Giveaway event. Particular gratitude goes to the Ladies of Charity and the Morsilli Family Fund for school supplies for needy area school aged children. WELL DONE!! In total, we served 440 people (147 families) and 32 volun-teers came out to help, including several stu-dents. At this time, we must SUSPEND OUR DONA-TIONS. Sadly, we are in need of a building in which to store and/or operate our ministry, as the current building in San Martin will be sold. ** Our new home must be in a building that does not require repairs, is compliant with regulations AND free of charge. But GOD IS GOOD, so if you or anyone you know is willing to host this ministry, or if you have any ideas for us, please text Debbie Molyneaux at (408)500-5659 or email her at [email protected] We greatly appreci-ate your prayerful consideration! Again, generosity is a hallmark of the St. Cathe-rine community - BLESS ALL OF YOU for your gifts of time, talent and treasure!!"

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

St. Catherine School News

Some of our younger St. Catherine Cougars put their values into action to support victims of the

Garlic Festival shootings. They sold lemonade and earned over $3000. The students said our theme from last year,

Love One Another, inspired them.

ST. CATHERINE SCHOOL APPLICATIONS FOR 2019-2020

A link for applications is available on our web-site, www.stcatherinemh.org, for the 2019-2020 school year. We still have spots in kindergarten and fourth grade. Contact the school office at 408-779-9950 for more information.

The California Schools in the Diocese of San Jose, mindful of their mission to the love of Christ for all, admit students of any race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, pro-grams and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the schools. The Catholic Schools in the Diocese of San Jose do not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and/or ethnic origin, age, sex or disability in admin-istration of educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletic and other school-administered programs.

WELCOME NEW COUGARS!

A huge welcome to our new Cougars! We have a number of new families with kindergartners, as well as a few new families in other grades. We are de-lighted to have them as members of the St. Catherine School community!

A special welcome to our new staff members: 2nd Grade Teacher—Macey Dunne and Jr. High Sci-ence—Denise Brady. We know you will love St. Catherine School. Welcome aboard!

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHTS Back to School Night for grades K-5 will be held on Tuesday, August 20. Parents will meet in the church at 6:30, then attend presentations by teachers. Our Jr. High Back to School Night is Thursday, August 22. Again, parents will meet in church at 6:30, then walk their child’s schedule and hear about policies and expectations from each teacher.

Each school family is expected to have at least one parent attend the night for their child’s grade. This is a fabulous way to meet your child’s new teacher and find out what your child will be learning this year.

LENDING LIBRARY FOR PARENTS AND PARISHIONERS

A small lending library of faith based and spiritu-al books is available in the school lobby. If you are looking for special information about our Catholic faith or a book to inspire you to seek a closer relationship with Jesus, stop by and check out the selection. Just take the book with you and return it when you finish. If you have books about our faith and developing a relation-ship with Christ that you would like to share with others, just drop it off at the school office. We’ll put it on our list and get it on the shelf.
