FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

FROM THE DESK OF FR. FRANCIS KALAW, PAROCHIAL VICAR…

My God Is Called Love

Dear Brothers and Sisters, The second reading that we have this Sunday is one of the most popular readings at weddings: this passage from Paul’s First Letter to the Co-rinthians: “Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous. It bears all things. Love never fails.” It is a beautiful hymn to love, and it captures the emotions that many couples feel as they celebrate their wedding day. But St. Paul did not have marriage in mind. He was writing about the early Christian community in Corinth. The members had many gifts. They were not using them well. They were divided. They said they believed in Jesus, but they were not acting the way he taught. Jesus wanted eve-ryone to love God and to love their neighbor. Thus, St. Paul reminded them what love is and what it is not. “It is not jealous, it is not pompous, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing.” Without love, our lives and relationships are like a noisy gong. We can accumulate things, be showered with gifts, and even give things away, yet without love, all is worthless. What St. Paul is really describing, is a love that looks like Christ, the one who is Love incarnate. Let me share with you a story I found in Mother Teresa’s book entitled: A Revolution of Love. One Day Mother Teresa took a woman off the streets in Calcutta. She had sores infested with bugs. Mother Teresa cleaned and dressed her sores while the woman never stopped shrieking and even using swear words and insults. Finally the woman asked Mother Teresa, "Sister, why do you do this? Not everyone behaves like you. Who taught you?" Mother Teresa replied, "My God taught me." The woman said she wanted to know her God. Mother Teresa kissed her on the forehead and said, "You know my God. My God is called love."

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

Two essential elements of today’s readings are love and judgment. Paul describes, in wonderfully poetic words, the fundamental need for love to be evident in all activities of our lives. Luke’s Gospel reading tells of Jesus’ rejection by “all” in the synagogue when he spoke of himself as the promised of scripture. Well rejection is too mild, they wanted to kill him for making of himself, one whom they knew personally, to be God’s chosen. What if we combined these two elements and spoke of loving judgment. That diminishes neither one but instead brings together a need we have to be loving in all things while also making judgments in ordinary living. While each is important, even fundamental, on its own, together they fuse into a means to be more Christ-like. Looked at in another way, we become better armed to avoid rigidity; more able to include compassion and uncertainty in judgments which benefit from including the grace of a loving heart. It is no wonder that a militaristic truth, divide and conquer, focuses primarily on judgement which may or may not have included the possibility that success may be possible without battle. When a “judgment” is made that becomes sacrosanct, unable to be changed, we have already lost the chance for amicable outcomes. Even at a personal level this same type of choosing is all too easily made. Love takes effort, it means ensuring that we have admitted the possibility that we don’t know everything about the choice before us. Sadly, when seen as equivocation it’s termed weakness when in reality it takes great strength to reflect deeply, with a consciousness that love needs to be present as we ponder our choice. Truly it is “easier” to let hatred, or at least a lack of love, charge past the call to be loving as Jesus loved. But easiness can quickly turn to uneasiness when we reflect and realize we’ve not made the best choice. It is at that point that love, which includes love of self, asks that we learn how to avoid a rush to judgment; by slowing down, reflecting on Jesus’ presence with us, ignore what some would see as loss of face when we capitulate, and offering a prayer for right judgment, loving judgment. It is not that we will always make the “correct” choice but rather that the choice will include reflection about consequences beyond just the choice at hand. That reflection can be called love since it seeks the best for all involved, not just ourselves. Scripture is rife with examples of those who misjudged Jesus. Let that strengthen us to make choices which include love.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Mother Nature has invited grass (and weeds) to blanket our lands. That means soon there will be mowing. This is a good time to prepare the equip-ment, ensure the fluids in the mower are fresh and any batteries charged… including yours :-).

No es celo-so.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

Equipping Families to Pass On the Faith

EDGE We begin our series called NOVA this week, and ask a parent to join your middle schooler. NOVA is a series that will help us to break open the season of Lent so that we can be better pre-pared (and with Lent be-ing a season of preparing for Easter, this is a prep-aration to the preparation). Put it on your calendars for next MON-DAY. I know, we’re throw-ing things off like crazy—last month was Wednes-day, this month is Monday. We apologize for the inconsistency—but you should still go!

The “Love” Chapter

We are a couple of weeks from Valentine’s Day, but we hear Corinthians chapter 13 in today’s second reading. As I write this, it is actually one of scripture reflections for the week. It is not a easy one to hear, as it also reminds me how much I need God’s help to show that kind of love. We usually hear these verses at weddings, but I invite you to reread the chapter as a family. Ask each other: • What did we learn about God’s love? • How are we like without love? • What are ways our family shows this kind of

love to each other and to those around us? These verses are a reminder that God is love and shows his love for us in all the ways that St. Paul describes. God enables us to love others with his kind of Love.
